How to Handle Neighbors Dogs

Legally, it’s their responsibility to contain the dogs, right? It’s not my responsibility to make my yard undesirable.

I’m assuming it was.
It might not be. You need proof.

It could be another dog or animal.

It’s like farmers assuming dog x is killing their sheep. They put cams up, turns out Its dogs a b and c

It’s really not like a farm at all. I live in a subdivision with only one aggressive dog that has already gotten into my yard and the owners have not finished their fence they were going to build to keep the dog in their dog run. I do need proof though. We are going to buy a camera today.

yes I did not suggest that. I was giving you the example of how these assumptions can backfire. Put up a cheap cam or just set your computer or device up to record

We got back from a week in the hospital to find our yard full of poop, our inflatable pool, and all of our kids’ toys chewed to pieces. Not only did the dog get in, but they left it in our yard long enough to do serious damage.
These vicious dogs should be shot before they kill any toddlers in the neighborhood.

Ammonia in a spray bottle. They will not jump on the fence anymore.

I can give it a try, though even it works, it wouldn’t be permanent.

They will associate cause and affect and thereby become trained to stay away from the fence and your yard.

And if the dog is injured by it, you could be cited for animal cruelty.

I don’t know if anyone has already said this, but seeing as the dog came in and damaged your yard and property I would think that once you had footage of it in your yard (or maybe even with the photo you already have) that you’d have a case in small claims court. I mean you’ve contacted the owner. They know that it’s their dog. You know that it’s your dog. I’d be considering seeking damages at this point just to encourage them to reinforce their fence. If they won’t do it as a responsible pet owner, maybe they’ll do it because it hurts their pocket book.

According to the police, he couldn’t name them as suspects because I didn’t have proof that it was their dogs this specific time.

ok , this comes from an animal behaviourist who has a Ph.D in this area.

A dog who attacks other dogs and animals is not said to also be going to attack people, and vice versa.
Toys chewed = playing, not attacking. Defacating is not aggression, its normal.

they will not associate cause and effect, and using a spray bottle could very well arouse their prey drive.

its a very bad idea.

Yeah, but they were OUR toys. Not theirs. And it’s OUR grass, not theirs. And the dogs ARE aggressive aside from destroying our stuff. They lean on the fence and bark and snarl at us. My yard. I get to decide what is aggressive. I say that the dogs are a threat to our safety and are not allowed to step one foot in our yard.

You miss my point.
Chewing stuff up is play, it’s not aggression.
And aggression in itself, towards animals does does not equal aggression towards people and vice versa. Which was a reply to AINg.
A dog can chase and kill a cat or small fluffy thing, or attack other dogs, and never show a growl to a human. Or vice versa.
Dogs barking at fencelines are being territorial and protective of their space. That’s what dogs do.
Weren’t the neighbours working on containing these dogs away from the fence Line?
Or weren’t you guys putting up those rollers or making the fence dogproof.

it could be wrong to assume it’s those dogs, who are responsible for chewing up toys and the pool in your yard. We can shoot the wrong dogs for killing the sheep. It’s also strange that it happened only while you were away. You could have another animal control issue you aren’t aware of.
But have you spoken with the neighbours? They may not even be aware their dogs are barking at the fence line.
A cam is the best idea.

The neighbors are aware their dogs are barking at us. They’ve seen the doing it and the wife complained that they are “harmless” when I brought my kids inside to prevent them from getting too close to the fence and getting bitten over the top of it.

Dogs don’t have to climb up a fence to bark and snarl at neighbors trying to enjoy their own yard. We had dogs growing up and if our dog barked when they were outside, we came out to see what they were barking at. They usually weren’t barking at a person, but if they were, we didn’t allow them to approach the fence and we stayed out there with them so whoever it was knew they were safe. We never allowed our dogs to jump on a fence and snarl at neighbors. With supervision and maybe a leash, that problem is really easy to solve.

The neighbors did start putting up a taller fence around the dog run, but they haven’t finished it yet. We did not put up the rollers, since it looked as if they were going to solve the problem, though we probably will have to. We’re having work done on our porch in the fall and I was going to ask if the rollers could be part of the project.

We had hoped that if we gave them enough time, they’d get the fence finished. They started during 4th of July weekend and the next weekend we were on a trip. When we came back it wasn’t done yet, but then we were in the hospital. The damage happened the last couple of days we were at the hospital. My husband was still spending the night at home and he noticed the pool was deflated the day before we came home. He had come back late the night before, so the damage might have been done already, but he was in the yard watering the day before that and the yard was fine.

I find it really unlikely that there are other animals in the subdivision. No one else has complained of any. ALso, there are two houses across the street from me that have the same pool with no fence around their yard and neither of them had any damage or have had any damage. If a dog was out in the street and wanted to swim, you would think they’d go after those pools and not climb a fence to get into my yard. Also, I spoke to a neighbor that has a chicken coop and she has a security camera and hasn’t seen anything in her yard or in the street. I think the reason our pool was damaged is because our yard is adjacent to the fence the dog has to jump in order to get out. We don’t have anything in our yard that would attract a dog that was out in the street and motivate it to climb INTO a fenced yard. The neighbor’s dog isn’t trying to climb in, it’s trying to climb out.

The neighbors claim they don’t think the dog got out because it was climbing up on a certain shrub to boost itself into our yard and they took that shrub out. They also claim that their mom watched their daughter during the day and she watches the dogs when she lets them out. I suspect that their mom doesn’t watch the dogs nearly as consistently as she leads them to believe. I also suspect that she knows the dog came back soaking wet and pooping purple pool noodle foam and forgot to mention that to them.
