Now I have been a member of CAF for about 3 years or so, and so most people know my background. For those who don’t, here is a very short recap:

raised devout United Methodist–Senior year of high school started dating Catholic girl–went to Mass and felt fufilled–started going all the time and reasing TONS–started RCIA but didn’t finish–girlfriend left me after three years for another man (heartbreaking)–haven’t been to Mass since October of 2006.

I really want to move on in my life. I am at a new college and am making new friends. I plan on applying to medical school next year but right now I feel very lonely, sad, depressed. It’s like something in my life is missing. I love the Faith and it hurts me so much that I just can’t bring myself to go. I think some of it has to do with my ex-girlfriend. I know that I will get over the whole thing, in fact I have made sooo much progress. Things are getting better but it seems like right now I am stuck in a rut. What do I do?

all the best,
dxu

For someone in your condition to exercise faith would be a valuable thing. A bit of praying when it seems pointless; a kind act even though you just don’t feel like it–these are examples of walking by faith not sight.

It’s times like these when it really matters. That’s perseverence.

Peace.
John

start the rosary please… and just say it even if you dont feel like it and you cannot concentrate on the mysteries…

it worked for me and i still do it sometimes when i am totally not able to pray…

you will find the scriptural rosary at my website…

Mass! It is when you feel the least like going that you need to be there the most! Force yourself. It is not about “feelings”, but about the Grace you need to survive…

snowman,

Consider a self help book about mourning, loss, or grief. Things can hang around after the end of a relationship and rear their ugly heads years later if you have not come to terms with your feelings about what happened.

Also, the posters who suggested Mass and the rosary are completely on track. Make prayer a habit and it will become more like second nature.

Can you go to Eucharistic Adoration anywhere near your school? I suspect you felt fulfilled at your first Mass experiences because of the Real Prescence. Adoration is a way to jam your week full of the physical prescence of God. It will help you grow in faith and help other areas of your life at the same time.

p.s…my train derails a lot too! Lets pray for each other. 😉

The answer to “How to move on?” is “Choose to move on”.
Life is a series of choices. You can choose to stuck in the sad spot, or you can choose to get out as soon as possible.

It is easier to be said than done, but still, the choice is yours. Actually, you have no other choice but to move on.

We all have heart breaking experience. Years ago, when my first love broke up with me, oh, how sad I was! But I moved on with lots of prayers and faith in God. Rosary definitely is the most powerful prayer. Trust God knows who is best for you.
God will provide a much better fit for you when you are ready.
But you have to get ready. When you are depressed, you are not ready for any new relationship.
Take this experience as a learning process, you will become more confident and better of handling relationship in the future.

Keep yourself busy, participate in good activities, make new friends, talk to a good friend or a counselor when you need to talk. Above all, talk to God, go to Mass, pray the rosaries.

You will move on, you have no other choice. God bless!

Well that last post was pretty blunt but it is true. And it is easier said than done. The truth is I know what I want in life, that’s not an issue. The biggest problem is my will power or my courage. I don’t miss the person, but I miss the companionship and I’m worried I won’t find someone with good morals/values. I guess she didn’t have them though so I can do better in the respect. I need to surround myself with things and people that will only better me. I also want to finish RCIA so I can be fully Catholic but i’m doubted by my family and I don’t know if I have the courage to stand up and say this is my life, this is what I believe to be true. I can spout out tons of reasons why I believe in Catholicism but they don’t care. It’s a moot point to them.

One step at a time is all I can do, and it will take some more time obviously to get over all of this. But with the Grace of God and some help from Mary, I know I can do it all.

You can do it, you WILL cause you obviously love the faith and God.

I’m in a somehwhat similar situation with the Church. I love it, I want to go. But due to things in my past I have a very hard time going. Plus, my family is also less than enthused about my conversion.

I also started RCIA, and didn’t finish…for various reasons.

Its hard working through the past anbd moving on, but with God’s grace and love we can do it.

I pray you begin to have an easier time going.

God Bless

I think Bob Seger had a song about a God-sized hole in every person that can only be filled by God, but St. Augustine probably said it better. We cannot fill the emptiness that can be filled only by God with other creatures and expect to find happiness. It is not the job of another creature to make us happy, True happiness lies in relationship with God, cultivated with the same care we give to other relationships, and is described succinctly in the Beatitudes.

I will tell you what has been working for me, since I know all about being lonely lately and am working on moving on. I’ve been going to Adoration lately, and it is really nice to spend some time with Jesus. I am a convert and had never tried Adoration before, but my priest suggested it during confession. Last time I went, there was a copy of a book by St Louis de Montfort that I picked up and started reading. It was all about how praying the rosary will prepare your heart to fully receive Jesus. It was very lovely, gave me lots of hope. So, my suggestion is go to Adoration and pray the rosary. You don’t need to be Catholic to do either, and I really think that you will find yourself pointed in the right direction if you start both of these practices.

yes… i think when we start losing ourselves in the world… we lose God … we need to keep in touch with him all the time through good times and bad and we will truly be happy…
he is the only one with unconditional love … someone who will be there no matter what… how can we forsake such love?

Brother you seem to be understanding what you want in life to a point, God bless you for that. Remember also that in Heaven when this life is finished you will stand alone in front of God, all the thoughts words and desires of those others (parents brothers, sisters etc) and their wishes will have nothing to do with directing you.
It is how you DID do what you believe is right. How you heard Jesus call you to follow Him and if you did follow Him that counts.
Remember Jesus tells us that those who mention My (Jesus)name on earth, He will mention their name in heaven to the Father. Keep going, do not be discouraged but be of good cheer.

One last point you might think about. If you hang onto past situations the longer they will weigh you down. Jesus askes us to give them to Him to forgive the people of the past ( do not go to bed with unresolved issues) Jesus tells us. Forgive self for gettinig tied up in these situation, remember that there is no blaming with Jesus.

God bless

*Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with Thee. Blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. *

The St. Louis Mary de Montfort book that has been the most influential is known as True Devotion to Mary or True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin. (John Paul II said it changed his life) Another St. Louis Mary de Montfort book that helps me is the Secret of the Rosary. Maybe these books are what the above poster is referring to.
