How to reconcile sexual history?

The girl was brought up Catholic herself, from strict parents from what I gather. I guess a fear of mine is that I can’t comprehend where she is coming from (in terms of the ramifications of sex, multiple partners etc etc), and that it frightens me slightly in my lack of knowledge and thus being ableto deal with it, especially in regards the future.

Like I said below, there is a difference between having had a sexual partner or two, but multiple people really is completely alien to me. You mentioned that it may be an inability to make a choice? I would have a fear of being “just another choice” especially with someone who has chosen a fair few times already.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been tempted myself for the past few years of university, and maybe in hindsight it would have been better for me to have gone down that path so I could understand this girl better. Hmm.
Provided that she is honest, I don’t think the issue is her past acts so much as her current and likely future attitudes. She’s not only going to be your wife, she’s going to be the mother of your children and a major influence on their attitudes, so what she thinks is very important even if she acts otherwise within your marriage out of deference for your thoughts. That is a big deal.

Well she said is prepared to date monogamously with me, but I’m not sure she thinks of her behaviour as sinful…
I generally fail to see a whole lot of difference between “serial monogamy” (what most americans do) and poligamy, except in terms of rate (poligamists do their deeds all at once 🤷)… so if this was a past opinion of hers, then I’d say move past it…

but this appears to be a CURRENT opinion of hers as well, and something that she’s only putting away in order to win you over… that’s a problem… a real problem. If she’s not viewing monogamy with you forever as the ONLY potential outcome for this relationship, then run… now.

Finally, if you are going to pursue something with her, you should ask to see results of a recent STD test, so that you won’t be surprised. Getting herpes on your honeymoon would not be the best surprise present a chaste person could receive…

Honestly her life in that department before she met you is really her business only. If it bothers you now and you feel worried over it for the future you might think of moving on and finding someone else because she can’t change her past. It’s not really important weather or not she believes everything you do but it is important that she RESPECTS your beliefs. If you can live with that then your relationship has a chance if not then it’s better to acknowledge it now and let her go.

Just because she’s had former lovers (is that what you mean? She’s had sex?) doesn’t mean you cannot* trust *her. If she wants to be with just you, her past does not mean she’s not able to be monogamous for the rest of her life.
Polyamorous means more than just having had sex previously… it means that she has previously been engaged in relationships where there was no such thing as exclusivity (for example, one girl and two boyfriends… presumeably who know about each other and don’t mind).

The fact that she does not now find that to be a problematic lifestyle but is only “giving it up” to get with this guy is most DEFINTELY an issue…

All relationships that exceed the boundaries of friendship serve the purpose of discernment of marriage with that specific person firstly (since it wouldn’t be fair to use a living person as a vocation discernment tool) and in general secondarily. Reason requires that appropriate discernment should precede an important decision. Reason also dictates that if we think the match is poor, after all, or there are serious problems we can’t solve, we do not proceed with a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship (if we’re dating) or with engagement (if we’re in a relationship) or with marriage (if we’re engaged), depending on the stage we’re at. What is wrong is when sexual relations become a a part of this discernment or if there is no discernment whatsoever but just a sexual relationship to serve current needs.

So, flighty relationships, like tasting a bit of this, then a bit of that, might be somewhere on par with polyamory or close to it. However, definitely not the fact that relationships end if they fail, and new relationships start with a different person.

Having multiple romantic relationships going at the same time is unnatural and disrespectful. For this reason it is my opinion that having more than one boyfriend or girlfriend or unspecified romantic partner (somebody you court, woo, kiss, declare feelings for, get emotionally mushy with), to speed up the process or sieve through more people in a shorter time, is wrong. As is having serial relationships for a short duration by design (in order perhaps to pick one of those serially tested people). But just moving on from failed relationships to new ones is not serial monogamy, is not wrong, and is not morally on par with polyamory.

Sorry, I disagree with most posters here. I think this should be an instant deal-killer. Someone with that kind of past is not a good risk for future monogamy. You have a person with not only a sexual past, but a past that most people DO NOT have, which is at least 2 lovers at the SAME TIME. She’s got that experience forever in her mind. She’s been loved on by 2 men, taking turns - how is just 1 guy going to be able to compete with THAT? I’m saying…GET OUT NOW.

I don’t know. When I run that thought experiment, I think once would be more than enough to convince me that I never wanted to get into that arrangement again!

It is possible that, having been subjected to actually having two lovers simultaneously, she’ll be all the more thankful for Mr. One-Is-Exactly-the-Right-Number.

Still, I would find any residual attitude of “it’s OK for some people, if everyone is agreeable” would be a deal-breaker, even if I felt very certain my spouse wouldn’t apply that to us.

I do somewhat agree with you. I do think it is possible for someone to leave that lifestyle behind and commit themselves to morality, of course it’s possible with our Lord. But I do not agree with the “It’s none of your business” mentality. Sexual history DOES have meaning. Be it physical baggage (This lady could very well have acquired an STD from a past sexual partner, a future husband deserves to know about that) or spiritual baggage. When two people have sex, they connect with one another. Society tries to tell us that they don’t, that it’s just meaningless fun, but they do connect with one another. All of those fleeting connections can lead to life long emotional issues.

Polyamorous can also mean that all three people are having sex, each with both of the others, and living in a household together.

Honestly, to me that’s worse than carrying on sexually with more than one partner individually.

If she sees nothing wrong with this type of arrangment, I think she might not be the right person for the OP.

As others have said, it’s important to share morals with the person with whom you would be raising children.

Pssst… by definition in human sexuality, serial monogamy involves sequential maited pairings (aka, sex in flightly relationships).

Catholics do not validly practice “serial monogamy” because we are not to enter into sexual/reproductive monogamous relationships one after another. Instead, we are to discern marraige.

That being said, that was why I said that serial monogamy is not that different than polygamy… because within it’s proper context serial monogamy serves exactly the same end as polygamy.

I was speaking in a broader context, including relationships where there is no sex. Intercourse doesn’t exhaust the whole matter of male-female relationships that exceed the boundaries of friendship.

As for the difference, I see your point and you could even argue that polygamy can be better than abandonment, but the way I see it, while both flighty relationships and polyamory are unnatural and wrong, the additional eek factor of having multiple partners at the same time outweighs the eek factor of flightiness, even if the end result might be having had sex with the exact same people.

You may not be able to reconcile it. It’s not wrong of you to move on to someone who has a compatible sexual history.

Not only that, it makes me wonder if such a perseon has a higher risk of having STDs (in case this point has not been brought up).
