NOTHING can be done about abortion federally until Roe v Wade is overturned. That cannot be done unless presidents are elected who will nominate justices who see the judicial branch’s job as interpreting the Constitution, not creating new law to rectify perceived injustices not mentioned in the Constitution or amendments. Trouble is that it is VERY hard to find people who see law this way AND have a nebulous enough record to get through the Senate approval process past the abortion gate-keepers like Ted Kennedy and his ilk.
IMO, if you are pro-life and believe in government programs to aid the poor, your best bet is to ONLY vote for pro-life candidates for president and senate. If that means that you have to vote for a party that repulses you on social justice issues (i.e. Republican most of the time), then go ahead and vote Democrat for the House. That will require both sides to compromise on most issues but will deprive the Dems (who appear to be OWNED by the abortion industry) the ability to block future genuine pro-life justices.
You say that some pols only SAY they are pro-life, and that may be true (such as Bob Casey junior, who recently voted to put the PRO-abortion party in control of the Senate judiciary committee). But look at history. Read up on the Robert Bork nomination in the 80’s. It is the DEMOCRATS that have forced republican administrations to find candidates with vague records on abortion instead of outright pro-life justices. Do the research. Dems have over and over again proven that abortion is their most sacred principle and that they will indefinately block any nominee that threatens it, no matter the national consequences of unfilled offices. No other issue is as important to them than maintaining abortion. R’s have failed to pull it off some times as disappointments like Souter and Kennedy prove. But they HAVE gotten good ones in like Thomas and Scalia (and hopefully Roberts and Alito). EVERY SINGLE democratic nominee since Roe has been firmly on record as unwilling to reconsider Roe before being nominated. That will continue because it is one of the most revered principle of that party.
Think about it hard. Vote pro-life for senate and president, even if you don’t like their stance on lesser issues. Use your House vote as a check on the stances you dislike in the pro-life presidential and senate candidates. The two will have to compromise on most issues, but the pro-lifers will have no excuse on abortion (at least until Roe is defeated). Consider that pro-lifers may be only ONE JUSTICE away from defeating the evil decision of Roe v Wade and putting the abortion issue in the hands of the legislative branch, where it has always rightly belonged. THEN we will have to face tougher choices. For now, the House is nearly irrelevant on abortion and you can feel free to vote that way without getting bloodstains on your voting hand.
