How tough are the psychological examinations for entering the seminary?

Sending a copy of the MMPI to the applicant to review, or to take, outside of the control of the examiner violates every precept of psychological testing (I know, I taught the subject on the Graduate level).

The answer is, the psychological screening is not nearly tough enough. Too many people are still faking their way into Seminary.
I don’t how someone could fake their way in. I have been grilled and was asked some really personal questions. I admit that it was not that big of a deal as let’s face it this is for Chirst. IF you fake your way in if that is even possible, wouldn’t that corrupt your ordination? I would think that the saminary would catch on.
I used to question as to why things are so hard or so much red tape. Finaly when I have gotten past the first meeting a lot of things have come clear. So I think that this application process is a great screening. I still am not out of the woods by a long shot but I see a slight chance that I never have before.
I did receive those tests in the mail today and had to fill them out for tomorrow. It will still be a three hour process and maybe the Doctor will go over them. I could have cheated on these tests but what would that gain me?? I beleive that if you cheat your ordination won’t take. It is not worth it as you would be a blasphemer by performing acts only reserved to priests and that would I think count as a great blasphemy.
I guess you could fake you way in but I bet it is much harder to do than just being yourself and do it right. My opinion anyway.

In time those who “fake their way into the Seminary” will be out, sooner or later.
Either you have a calling or not. The 9-10 years of formation is no easy task.
To me Seminarian formation is tough. Gob Bless All Seminarians!

I finished my evaluation and the doctor told me that I am quite a bit above average intelligence and that made me feel more at ease. I am sure there is much more to it than that. It a while but not as bad as I thought it would have been. So it was a good experience for me.

My vocations director contacted me a few days ago informing me that the report came back, and said now we are waiting on the application. My question is, is that a good sign that the report came back positive? Common sense tells me so,but I don’t know. What do yoiu think?

I don’t know if it’s a good sign, though if the vocations director has indicated that the application is going to proceed (if that’s what you mean by “waiting on the application”).

When I did the psychological assessment, the psychologist reported directly to the bishop. At the end of the assessment he told me in summary what he was going to tell the bishop because I had to sign a document saying that I had given permission for him to talk to the bishop about the assessment. So I knew what was going to be said about me.

Did the psychologist talk you at all after the assessment? Anything that might give you some idea of the outcome? I really thought it was fairly standard practice for the psychologist to discuss the results - though I guess it would depend on the format of the assessment, as it might not be possible to ascertain the results immediately…

He told me that I am above average intelligence and that i had a great vocabulary and very sharp. he was puzzled as to why I didn’t do well in school, I told him why and he was satisfied of the answer. It seemed to be a real positive experience. Again if this was a regular job application process nothing to do with the priesthood I would defently say it was a real positive situation. But being the Church a vocation director a bishop involved I feel i am in uncharted waters in regard to it’s outcome and what protocols they are following.

Shalom brothers and sisters in Christ,

Psychological examinations for entering the seminary? Sound interesting test. I once asked the spiritual director, a Jesuit priest during a retreat to give me some sort of test such as multiple choice kind of questions, but he refused to give me as it would take a long time to finish. Till now, I have this burning curiosity about this test. Does anyone of you here know if there is any Catholic websites that provide this test online such as multiple-choice typed questions? I really want to know whether I am eligible enough to enter the priesthood vocation.

With regards to the retreat, the theme is about finding your deepest desire. It happened that I have conflicting desires. I desire for simplicity and truth but not for money and power. On the other hand, I desire a happy marriages life. So my retreat friend prompted to me that I can either go for priest or marriage life. At this age of 23, I still have not found any right girl to date with. Can that be a sign to enter priesthood? I am confused now. Please help me.

That’s why I hope that anyone here may provide me the Catholic website that have this
kind of test. My goodness, am I discerning now in an indirect way?! How I wish Jesus can stand in front of me and tell me the right path!

Thanks for reading this and hope you can help me. God bless.

The test was intensive. I had to finsh 40 incomplete sentences. There is the MMPI test that is true false questions that numbered 500 total. Example. “you hear voices when no one is in the room” you answer true or false. another question “you sometimes feel great sadness and then extreme happiness” and so on so forth. Then they give you 12 blocks that have red and white sides and half and half. You copy the pattern as fast as possible 20 of those easy to real complicated. THen the ink blot test then the puzzle test then the series of pictures and have to put them together start to finsh as like a comic strip. then pictures like what do you see and how does the story end. It was pretty intense. And that is how you get a personalty profile as well an indirectly an intelligence test.
