The Catholic Medical Association’s Director, John Brehany, has published a report on this topic that is very thourough. It is difficult to stay informed in the area of bioethics, but the CMA strives to help us do so:

cathmed.org/swf/CMA_Statement_HPV_Vaccine.swf

On this site you will also find info on other vaccines (some rubella and others) that are derived from embryonic stem cells. This is good info for parents to have in making decisions in this area.

The multicenter, randomized, double-blind trial enrolled 552 women 16-23 years of age in the United States, Scandinavia and Brazil, who were given 3 doses of vaccine or placebo over 6 months.
The HPV vaccine appears to be safe.
A small study done on older females dictates that this is safe?
Bioethics have given catholics a great deal of grief.
The CMA supports widespread use of Gardsail for girls and women in the age range for which the baccine has been recommended by the ACIP, because it is effective, safe and ethical to use provided certain conditions are met.
The ACIP stands for the Advisory Committee for Immunization in the Center for Disease Control.

So the Catholic Medical Association is essentially backing this. Now it may seem to many that this is being middle of the road but it is not when it comes before legislation, the other side jumps right in and says “Look, the Catholic Medical Association supports the recomendations by the ACIP” Next comes every American Medical Association to speak on the wonders of this “Cure” and the bills passes in- blue states first -and then the government jumps in and says, “Let’s make this available to everyone”.

This is exactly what happened with the morning after pill when a few Catholic Conference of Bishops at the state level waivered.
The other side is brutal!

Not to go off topic because I posted another thread with this news article, but I am still struggling with why when the morning after pill(Plan B) became an over the counter medication, my insurance company didn’t stop covering it and that my state Medicaid program will probably pick it up like NY has.

Since when in America do we, the insurance payee and taxpayer, cover over the counter prescriptions?

HPV can be transmitted in any type of warm environment where lots of people congregate and viruses can survive – think hot tub and swimming pools Yes, this is more rare than tranismission via sexual contact, but the point is that it still happens.

A very good friend of mine came very close to losing her life to cervical cancer because her husband cheated on her and then passed the virus to her. In men, HPV does NOTHING. In women, it can be deadly.

Doesn’t ANYONE here see this as a major medical breakthrough?? A vaccine that can prevent certain types of CANCER! This is HUGE! This could mean that a vaccine to prevent breast cancer and other types may not be such a distant dream!

I am not Catholic, yet. And I am very pro-life. But I fail to see how requiring a vaccine like this promotes “the culture of death.” Rather, it seems to me like it is life-affirming! This vaccine may save your life!

I do. Honestly, I’m baffled as to why so many people around here are opposed to it. There’s simply no reason for young women not to get the vaccine.

Well, I’ve stated my case so I’ll try not to beat that horse 😛 but I’m baffled as to why one would think it necessary to give an **elementary school student ** a vaccine for what is primarily an STD.

There is no evidence to support that HPV is transmitted via hot tubs, swimming pools, etc. cdc.gov/std/hpv/common-infection/HPVBrochureCleared-Online.pdf

You are correct that non-sexual transmission occurs and yes it is rare.

“There is no evidence that contaminated toilet seats, doorknobs, towels, soaps, swimming pools or hot tubs, can transmit HPV. However, some unexplained cases of HPV lesions do occur and one should never rule out the possibility that an HPV infection may have been caught in a non-sexual event”. cme.asccp.org/faq/histHPV.cfm#8

I am cautiously optimistic. I see beyond cervical cancer and actually see the big picture. The vaccine may decrease abnormal paps, ab pap treatment/follow-up, and genital warts. I would prefer my DD not be diagnosed with genital warts or LSIL or cervical cancer. I am just as baffled as to why it should be mandatory at this time. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics supports a go-slow-go apporach to monitor safety and effectivenss. I am not opposed to voluntary vaccination.

Of course, I speak only for myself.

Texas requires vaccine:
breitbart.com/news/2007/02/02/D8N1PVG80.html

Bottom line? 😉

"The New Jersey-based drug company could generate billions in sales if Gardasil _ at $360 for the three-shot regimen _ were made mandatory across the country. Most insurance companies now cover the vaccine, which has been shown to have no serious side effects.

Merck spokeswoman Janet Skidmore would not say how much the company is spending on lobbyists or how much it has donated to Women in Government. Susan Crosby, the group’s president, also declined to specify how much the drug company gave.

A top official from Merck’s vaccine division sits on Women in Government’s business council, and many of the bills around the country have been introduced by members of Women in Government."

To me, the calls for it being about “women’s health” ring as hollow as they do from the abortion lobby. Just my opinion. 😃

Yes, they are lobbying with alot of money.

Conservative Governor Perry in Texas has no problem with this and he has dictated that it be mandatory in Texas. How about the legislation? Do we have any say or is now just up the governors to decide for everyone?

(Again the FDA gave all the morning after pill. Nine state have no age limit on the morning after pill so a girl at any age can get it over the counter.)

I am opposed to this for many reasons. These girls will be 9 years old. Some may die or become disabled from it as we know with all vacccines there are problems. That is why they hand you the sheet with the statistics.

It will cost a fortune to implement-$360.00 plus cost of boosters per child, billions of dollars.

I am not really even sure if this is going to make a difference. We keep expanding our STD list as new diseases occur. No one will address the root problem, but they feel less guilty because they have handed everyone a shot. Not exceptable.

Some great accomplisment. Our figures for std’s are off the wall.
What, now we will find the cure for breast cancer and HIV?

We have lost our say on this one. It’s being railroaded through.
