[BIBLEDRB]Eph 5:22[/BIBLEDRB]

[BIBLEDRB]Col 3:18[/BIBLEDRB]
[BIBLEDRB]1Pet 3:1[/BIBLEDRB]

In the modern days of feminist view of theology these verses from St’s Peter and Paul often get ignored, glossed over or retranslated. However Both St’s. Peter and Paul taught this. If it was to be automatically assumed in the culture of day they would not have needed to say it. The challenge for a modern christian is how to interpret this in a manner which is faithful to the Sacred Scripture, while retaining the importance of the equal dignity which men and women share, and neither caving in to the worldly pressures of the modernist ideologies nor refusing to accept where modern progress has indeed shown a valid point on the equal dignity and rights of both men and women.

My personal interpretation is a bit like how the Captain and 1st Officer interact in Star Trek stories. The 1st officer has huge liberty to challenge the captain - particularly where that does not occur in public or in front of the junior crew (i.e. family)… However when the Captain makes a ruling, then that should be followed. Conversely: to “Pull Rank” on your spouse or overrule them is very damaging to the relationship, and should be avoided except in serious circumstances.

These verses in no way support a misogynistic role by the Husbands, rather in every case the inspired writers put heavy responsibilities on the husbands and demand they treat their wives with great love and respect. In Ephesians St Paul says a husband must love his wife to the point of giving up his life for her.
Marrriage is not a business, a government department, a company or even being on a space ship. It is about mutual respect, trust, self sacrifice, mutual submission and love. It is not a boss-personal assistant, captain-first officer relationship.

Quotes I think you may be unaware of
Douay-RheimsBible_Eph_5:22:
Let women be subject to their husbands, as to the Lord:
NAB_Eph5:22:
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.
DRC_Col3:18:
Wives, be subject to your husbands, as it behoveth in the Lord.
NAB_Col3:18:
Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord.
DRC_1Pet 3:1:
In like manner also let wives be subject to their husbands: that if any believe not the word, they may be won without the word, by the conversation of the wives.
NAB_1Pet3:1:
Likewise, you wives should be subordinate to your husbands so that, even if some disobey the word, they may be won over without a word by their wives’ conduct
Now lets be clear about this:
The Theology here is sound. My analogy about star-trek is nothing more than that, a personal analogy I use to try to illustrate the point. Of course it is a weak one.

The O.P. asked a question about how to submit to / respect her husbands wishes, and some on here were astonished that she: a modern woman, would even contemplate considering herself to owe obedience to her husband. Another questioned the idea that it was a christian attitude that you should do so.

The primary purpose of my post is that there is strong scriptural support for such a point of view, but that it is allways in the context of strong admonitions on the Husband to not abuse such a voluntary subordination by their wives. (read a few verses forward from any of those 3 quotes)

One person suggested that the word “Respect” is a more appropriate translation, however I cannot find any respected translations using such an interpretation of the Greek.

I do not have the ability to fully define a “Best” interpretation of these verses. rather there is a wide breadth of interpretation possible. It is not possible to interpret them in a way which does not place huge obligations on the Christian Husband in return for this. It is not possible to honestly interpret these wider passages as in any way advocating Misogyny or an abusive attitude on the part of men or husbands: rather in the biblical context the context of “Obedience” is always presented as a virtue. it is a virtuous application of the gift of Free Will, and in the context of situations where automatic or enforced obedience is not present.

Within the family the christian husband and father should adopt his role as Priest Prophet and King by virtue of his Baptism. He is rightfully the Head of the household, but that role should be exercised with the greatest of gentleness and love for his wife, and ultimately his children.
He is the Head of the Domestic Church. he is the Spiritual Father of his children and also should be the spiritual head of his wife.
if this spiritual headship can or should expand beyond spiritual matters may be open to debate, however I do not see how it cannot. There is no implication in the Bible that the Apostles are referring to just spiritual matters. the context clearly implies that they are referring to practical day to day matters in home and work lives.

I am sure some others agree with this opinion. So a wife is on the same level as a child. I do not see how a woman agreeing to enter or stay in a marriage, professing obedience to her husband, makes this domination alright.

Blessed JPII spoke of mutual submission, of how the dominance of women was the result of the Fall and sin and he was so right.

He is the Head of the Domestic Church. he is the Spiritual Father of his children and also should** be the spiritual head of his wife.*???** ** Explain to me??? Are you serious???** The couple is a couple??? Here, Your sentence, your words seems to be very particular, I am not okay!!! Each member of couple has to help the other, spiritually speaking.
*
** The spiritual head of his wife.
???

About conjugal sexual relations with all the corollaries,** there are a mutual and reciprocal submission, a mutual and reciprocal love, a mutual and reciprocal respect, a mutual and reciprocal trust, a mutual and reciprocal equality and a mutual and reciprocal equity:** the husband and the wife have** the same conjugal sexual privileges (the conjugal sexual equality)** and also the particular sexual privileges (the conjugal sexual equity in function of its own sex, alterity, complementarity, difference equity and equality).

The conjugal sexual rights of wife and the sexual rights of husband are the same concerning the initiative of the marital request of practicing the marital act, the fact of being a passive agent and an active agent in the context of the marital act, the right to say yes, the right to say no…etc;

The husband is not the boss, the chief, the leader, the master about the marital act, about the responsible procreation,** about the decision of trying to have a new baby…etc**;

The wife is not the boss, the chief, the leader, the feminine master (the mistress) about the marital act, about the responsible procreation, about the decision of trying to have a new baby…ect;

The possible submission of wife is the result of the Fall and sin: the submission of wife is not in the order of the Creation wanted bu Good. Each catholic husband has the moral obligation to avoid that. It is a moral obligation not to be tyran, a dictator, a father, a judge with her wife. The wife is not a child.

How do I accept my husbands wishes when I so desperately want the opposite!
I think the word desperate is very telling. It is charged with emotion, and we all know, when we’re full of emotion we often don’t think straight and can really make foolish decisions, regardless of what the issue is.

The request to wait is very reasonable. He didn’t say No, he said to wait. Think of this time as a spiritual exercise, acknowledging our own impatience, desire for our own will to be carried out unto ‘desperation’. There’s some inner work to be done here, as in all of us. 😉 It is a very excellent exercise to practice waiting, practice patience, to acknowledge our own self-will. All these things work against the partnership of marriage and family life.

God bless you and help you today.
