Not what I meant at all.

How often do you see pro-life ad on TV or news ? Probably never. Never even spoken or mentioned and it is the only outlet that most people are exposed to.

From my experience, I was never been exposed to a pro-life message and the term pro-choice would be meaningless to me. Heck, I wasn’t even aware of abortion itself. But if seeing an image of an aborted baby, I would become aware of what abortion is all about.

You think alot of teenagers are aware of abortion and what it is. Alot of them are exposed to sex and into sex. Promiscuity is rampant in this nation. Then when they’re pregnant and afraid, guess who come to the ‘rescue’. They probably learn about the evil of abortion when a crisis hits them.

I became aware of it only because of Catholicism and nothing to do w/ pro-life message.
Even if we did have such ads on television, I think that their effectiveness would be limited without people having the proper foundation. If you look in some places, abortion is already becoming the subject of jokes. Disgusting and vile, but it is happening. How can this be? The problem is at the foundation.

Of course, you are absolutely right in pointing to media as one of the problems. Television, movies, music, theater, the internet, and writing have are all completely saturated with modernist ideology. From our youngest days, we are exposed to it constantly. We are so inundated with the message of modernism and secularism that sometimes we do not even realize how deeply effected we are.

The power to reject the message of modernism and secularism comes through a spiritual foundation.

‘Wrong’ is relative

Of course not. It is the indignity that is being shown.

Alot of people don’t have time to sit and listen if education is all you give. How do you make them aware of the evil of abortion? They need something quick and fast.

It could’ve been worse, like 1/2.

Not what I meant at all.

Not to sound weird or anything but does anyone have a link to these abortion pictures?
I have a friend that has contemplated abortion and I would like her to see them. No one ever tells you or shows this kind of stuff…they all just push it like its ok to murder babies. I feel its important for people who are contemplating such an act to fully understand exactly what it is they are doing.

These priestsforlife.org/images/index.aspx might not be the exact ones, but they are similar [you have to page down to the last 2/3 or so of the page to the galleries].

We must be good stewards of the funds we have. Those projects which give shelter and aid to women and children certainly save lives. Furthermore, every woman who is helped by those programs has an opportunity to change the minds of others if she tells them her story.

I really do not know about the costs of all this and such, so I will not make a judgment. But at least I want to say that Rach is bringing a perspective which is worthy of thought. The shelters and aid programs, after all, are important pillars in a culture of life.

And if we want to stop the culture of death, only the culture of life will be able to do it.
Thanks, Steeltemplar. What I bolded was exactly what I was trying to get at.
When and where do you think they should be used?
I’ve been over this in previous posts. In very limited contexts with adults who consent to viewing them.
And, pray tell, when was the last time you wrote to your representatives in Congress protesting the money the government was spending on abortion [and now what will be spent on abortions in other countries]?
I don’t at all appreciate the condescending skepticism with regard to my own pro-life convictions that so many of your comments, such as this one, betray. I guess my last letter-writing campaign would have been 2-3 months ago, re: the FOCA bill. Happy now?
You talk as though “keeping the airplane in the skies 3-6 hours per day; keeping the trucks on the streets; financing billboards on I-80/90; etc. etc.” involved billions of dollars.

The fact is that no one method reaches all those concerned, and a multi-pronged approach that includes the graphic is necessary.
Not billions, but at least thousands. Thousands that could have supported at least one pregnant woman through prenatal care, her delivery, and the first few months of her child’s life.
Simply put, before we can convince people that abortion is evil, we must first convince them of the nature of good and the nature of evil in the first place. That essential foundation is gone. And without it, we cannot hope to reach them.
Again, I agree with Steeltemplar. So many young (and not-so-young) people today believe that right and wrong are simply relative (ahem, cathgal?), that good and evil just don’t exist. What matters is how we feel about things. Many people involved in the abortion debate don’t even have an adequate vocabulary or moral education to deal with the issue, to decide what is at stake. Until that is settled, this debate, particularly with regard to graphic images, is going to be met with emotional outrage on all sides, rather than serve to build a culture of life.

Sorry to jump in here. I acknowledge that for Rach a visual reminder of the horrors of abortion were not helpful **towards her development of a pro life mentality. **But I also agree with sedonaman that a mutli prong approach is needed, exactly for the reason supplied by Kath.

I know of a few people personally whose views changed because of these visual images.

Consent … hmm… I have 4 young children. I have mixed feelings about the exposure to children and once had to deal with it in reality, when driving home there was a gathering along the side of the road with some very graphic pictures.

I did feel that I was surprised and would have liked a moment to prepare. My youngest was only three. But since it was already done, we TALKED. They had already known about abortion, being introduced to it in the form of mini crosses on our parish lawn during past pro-life weeks. My daughter (then four) nominated herself caretaker, and every morning after dropping off my son at school, would have me stop so she could get out and set upright the crosses that had fallen over. Then she would kneel in the middle of the cross strewn field and pray. Cars would slow down because the image was so striking. This little girl alone amidst the crosses kneeling with her hands folded in prayer. Even now, almost five years later. I must pause and cry just remembering.

But I digress … back to our surprise visual display. Like I said … we TALKED.
My children were shocked, but I can’t say they were traumatized or I would be lying. Moreover it strenghened their already formed convictions, and now 2-3 years later … I am pleasantly surprised by my children’s frequent entreats to pray the Rosary outside of our local abortion mill. Most kids beg for candy. 🤷

I know as a parent, our desire is to shield our children from danger, from evil. BUT danger and evil is in the world, better to teach them and guide them through it. We have nothing to fear from the truth, even if the truth is ugly. We can trust that God will bring it to the good of those who love Him. Maybe not to the ones who don’t, but who’s fault is that?🤷

This is a very moving story, thank you for sharing.

Yes, I think so too. I wanted to add that I will be praying for your friend. My cousin was contemplating an abortion last year. It is difficult to speak to someone who is close to you. I felt the need to share with her about my own abortion may years ago. I was not only concerned for her baby, but also for her. I shared with her the increased risk for depression and suicide. The permanance of her decision. That MANY people were going to advice her, but that SHE would be the one who had to live with the consequences. I shared the regrets and the grief that I still carry everyday, even twenty years later. It was difficult to share with her as it is a painful subject for me. I prayed HARD for her and her baby, and I also enlisted the aid of the prayer warriors here on the prayer forum. You should too.👍
Code:
I am filled with joy to say that I attended the Baptism of her beautiful baby last month.:D
Don’t give up hope, and though it is beneficial to talk to your friend, it is MORE beneficial to talk to God about your friend. Peace and joy.
