and so it begins…

Hugh Hewitt just said, moments ago, that, according to his sources, Chief Justice William Renquist will announce his retirement on Monday, and that the President will announce his nominee on Tuesday.

hat tip

Rehnquist is long overdue to go…let’s hope we have a vast improvement.

The problem is that the obstructionist Democrats will not let a nomination up for a vote until they choose it. :banghead: So expect a vacancy for a long time.

Lock 'n Load, people. It’s Showtime.

Next week will make or break Republican’s support from the pro-life community.

If Bush selects a steadfast pro-life, pro-constitution judge, the votes of many Catholics for Bush will be validated.

If Bush selects a lousy moderate who could go either way, just to avoid the political fall-out, this is one Catholic who will not support the Republican party ever again.

There isn’t going to be as much of a fight over Justice Rehnquist’s replacement as there would be if Stevens or another one of the liberal justices retires.

The Senate Dems will probably agree to a conservative nominee here because it won’t alter the balance of the court.

This way they get to show how ‘fair’ they are and nothing really changes on the court.

But if Stevens, Ginsburg or Souter retires and a conservative jurist is nominated in their place, expect a huge fight.

Rehnquist was a very conservative Justice. Why do you think it was past time for him to go?

Gotta steamroll em. They lost in 2004. They lost in 2002. They lost in 2000. Nominate them and vote on them.

Brendan, love ya man, but you give liberals waaaaaaay too much credit. They will NOT “go along”. If you were a pro-abort-special-rights-terrorist-appeasing-enviromental activist-class-warfare-relativist-morality-ACLU type, would you want to confirm a lifetime conservative on the bench, or a “moderate” (see: liberal)??Or hold out the possibility that the '06 elections don’t go well for republicans and control of the senate goes back to democrats???

No, you fall in to the trap of thinking that democrats play nice.

Now that we have the seven GOP traitors in the Senate, you can bet it will be a moderate. Those seven traitors are basically democrats.

Good observation. Even Thomas could be nominated for Chief Justice and the Democrats would go along. IMO. But, as you say, there’d be a battle if one of the liberals retired.

Ther will be a battle no matter what. As much as we can say that democrats and republicans in Congress are do-nothing fat cats who like the status-quo, NEITHER will “go along” on this. The SCOTUS is the last opportunity liberalsim has in this country, and both the left and the right know it.

Perhaps, but I think that in '08, there’ll be a moderate in the Presidency, even if a Republican, and extremists like the current administration or like the Pelosi Dems will lose influence.

I’ve had it myself with the polarization we’ve experienced since '00.

Richard, you are in la-la land. As soon as (rather, IF) “moderate” McCain or Guilliani are nominated, the “moderate” tag will be LOOOOOOOONG GONE from the media!!! Brass tacks, if he is more conservative than the democrat, he’ll be a “staunch right-winger” before you know it.

Bush might be conservative, but on the political spectrum, he’s pretty progressive in quite a few areas, including government spending (and I’m not counting the war) on education, environment, medical benefits, AIDS, etc. Really, if he had a (D) by his name, he’d be considered a “moderate” by the MSM.
