In the Gospels, there was mention of a group that was, basically, doing what the apostles were doing, and they (the apostles) wanted to “shut down” the group because it wasn’t from their “circle.” I can’t remember the reference.

My questions are:
First, what is the reference for that?
Secondly, isn’t there mention in one of the “letters”? I thought that there was something, somewhere, in one of the letters of Paul that mentioned those who were preaching the truth, but for the wrong reasons. Can anyone help? 😊
 
Mark 9:38-39 (New International Version) “Teacher,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me,”

Contrast this to:

Matthew 12:30 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.

Luke 11:23 "He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me, scatters.

Apparently, this man that did not follow was doing good works in Jesus’ name. Those who do not do good works in Jesus’ name are scattering, and thus against Christ.

I wasn’t able to immediately locate a Pauline reference. Someone will, if it exists.

Are you referring to the those that taught non-Jews must follow Mosaic law by being circumcised and follow dietary laws? If so, see Acts 15, Gal 1:6-, and Gal 2:1-10.

I think the Paul reference you’re thinking of is in Philippians: “Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. The former proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice” (Phil 1:15-18).
