I am sure that you are all aware of one of the great commandments “Love thy neighbor as you would love thyself”. This means generally treat others as you would want to be treated. However it can get tricky.
I too have children and one day my eldest came to me and told me how a girl was mistreating her; my child wanted to retaliate. I told her that she should kindly point out what she was doing wrong and find a solution together. The girl got defensive and said “she didn’t care what she felt”. My child is not one to back down and take it so she gave her opinion; so much for turning the other cheek.
In all respect I have turned the other cheek many times but I too get defensive and won’t back down especially when it is something dear to me. Children learn from example: the more we become wise in the ways of God the easier it is to know how to react in certain situations. This of course doesn’t mean we should become “welcome mats” to everyone. It means that we should stand firm in our convictions but always kind and discerning to our opponents showing reverence to Jesus and God but by no means feeling the need to defeat your beliefs to appease the others.
God Bless
