Human respect: Opinions?

I am sure that you are all aware of one of the great commandments “Love thy neighbor as you would love thyself”. This means generally treat others as you would want to be treated. However it can get tricky.

I too have children and one day my eldest came to me and told me how a girl was mistreating her; my child wanted to retaliate. I told her that she should kindly point out what she was doing wrong and find a solution together. The girl got defensive and said “she didn’t care what she felt”. My child is not one to back down and take it so she gave her opinion; so much for turning the other cheek.

In all respect I have turned the other cheek many times but I too get defensive and won’t back down especially when it is something dear to me. Children learn from example: the more we become wise in the ways of God the easier it is to know how to react in certain situations. This of course doesn’t mean we should become “welcome mats” to everyone. It means that we should stand firm in our convictions but always kind and discerning to our opponents showing reverence to Jesus and God but by no means feeling the need to defeat your beliefs to appease the others.

God Bless 🙂

Hey, what’s your opinion on teaching kids about human respect? I don’t mean teaching them to respect authority or respect people’s rights, but teachings kids to respect others as human beings, to treat them as another “I”, and to love them as their neighbors. Of course, you might think differently, and that’s what I’m wondering: your personal opinion.

I do realize the irony of me asking this question given my wretchedness, by the way.
I don’t have any kids, but I find it hard enough as it is to teach myself to respect others when others are disrespecting the very things I love most (my faith, God, our Church . . . etc.). I struggle to keep mean/angry thoughts at bay at such times. Anyways, I try to remember Jesus’s words “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do” to simmer down. :o

p.s. I used to be better at keeping out angry thoughts more so as a child than as an adult. I’m striving to regain that same mentality I once had.

I find Jesus’ words simmer me down also but I did change it a little. “Forgive us Father for we know not what we do”. saying it this way helps me not only simmer down but it also humbles me.

Thank you for sharring.👍 I also used to be better at this as a child and I think it is God’s teaching that we do come to Him as children.🙂

I know I have many faults (impatience, anger, pride . . .etc.) but one thing I can’t understand is the attacks I’ve been noticing of late on faith, theists, God, our Church . . . and I know that in great part it’s our own fault for not living up to our faith, but it still gulls me to see such prejudice, and I would even call it hate towards what we believe in.

p.s. I think it’s a matter of humility (which I had more of as a child) that gave me such patience and love despite being teased and hurt by others.
