Archbishop Cordileone accepted thanks for hundreds of area Catholics who showed up for the picnic in his support, who say he is affirming authentic Catholicism. He has been vociferously targeted in a gay-friendly city by requiring that teachers and staff at archdiocesan high schools not publicly give support to adultery, masturbation, pornography, and homosexual relations.

One group of swallows does not a summer make. I know from my own studies that the vast majority of Catholics in that diocese are deeply displeased with the Bishop.

I understand why he was chosen for that post, clearly in “sodom-on-the-sea” one would want an arch conservative more than happy to condemn those who stray but I can’t help feel Cordileone is getting too far ahead. His decision on female altar servers especially struck me as odd, I understand his thoughts behind it but it seems a poor strategy to “attack” so many groups at once. He would have met far less resistance had he introduced his ideas slowly and conservatively, not all at once causing all factions of resistance to rally together.

Archbishop Cordileone, to my knowledge never decreed anything about altar girls. It was 2 priests at a particular parish that is slowly transitioning them out with the Archbishop’s approval.

It must be stated that by Church law, the decision to have altar girls reside solely with the pastor of the parish.

Hundreds? That is disappointing considering the over 400,000 he is Archbishop of…

I appreciate the attempt at positivity but “hundreds” actually makes me feel worse about the situation there…

Who did he condemn? Do you have a quote from the archbishop condemning anyone?

You are aware that the Archbishop did not ban female Altar servers? That that was =the the decision of a Parish Priest for his Parish only?

Only “hundreds”? In a city the size of San Francisco? As Hoosier Daddy already commented, that was a very disappointing turnout.

Good…maybe that means he’s upholding what’s true and doing his job!

Everything started with only 12! 🙂

Fantastic article, and I especially love that first photo!🙂 I wish I’d been down in the Bay Area to attend.

Please share the link to your studies. Are they peer reviewed?

I wouldn’t put much store in the numbers they quote, the liberal media has a tendency to underestimate when it suits their purposes, and I know this because I’ve been participating in the pro-life rally in Canada, wherein numbers are misrepresented by the media.

But consider that there are a lot more pro-lifers than those that attend the various March for Life’s each year, but not every pro-lifer attends, presumably because they have other obligations or because they do not know about them, so just because the turn-out for the picnic may have been in the hundreds, that does not mean there are not many, many more that support Archbishop Cordelione in San Francisco.

Is that how we do things? We assume that more were in attendance than is reported based on absolutely no evidence at all? Or we assume that there is a HUGE amount of support for from people that had something come up? That an ARCHBISHOP of the Church got so little support is shameful. That the criticism by Catholics there is louder than the support is shameful. That shepherd is in a mess with his flock. I support him, but those wolves are so numerous there that I am not sure that Crozier can fend them off.
But that is what the saints of the Church are made of. Right?
Strike one Cali
Strike two San Fran
Strike Three the media

That is a tough tall order.

I hope Pope Francis publicly supports him when he comes to the US later this year.
