Hundreds of Quebec parents file challenge against gvmt ban on religion in daycares

MONTREAL, Quebec, June 1, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Quebec parents and daycare providers filed a lawsuit Tuesday in the Quebec Superior Court against new provincial directives for the province’s massively-funded daycare system that ban mention of religion and God.

They say the directives, released in December, violate their freedom of religion guaranteed by provincial and federal Charter rights.

Under the directives, which take effect Wednesday, Quebec’s subsidized daycares are not allowed to offer any activity that aims to teach “a belief, dogma, or practice of a specific religion.”

“I want young Quebecers who attend our daycare services to do so in a spirit of openness to others and diversity,” said Quebec’s Family Minister Yolande James previously. She called the daycares “places of socialization and integration.”

Daycare providers, however, say the new directives are a complex system nearly impossible to decipher. A child may initiate and continue a religious activity, but instructors can have no part in the action. Religious leaders, such as a priest or imam, may visit a daycare, but are not permitted to give any type of religious instruction. The director of a Catholic daycare was even instructed that the popular song ‘Au clair de la lune’ could be sung as long as the final line — Pour l’amour de Dieu (For the love of God) — was dropped.

Oddly, religious symbols, such as Christmas trees, crucifixes, and menorahs will be allowed as cultural expressions, but staff will not be permitted to explain their religious significance.

In Quebec Caesar IS the enemy. This what happens when you let the government insert it’s MASSIVE schnozz into something that parents should pay for.The government needs to be reminded it rules because we ALLOW it to.

Quebec in general is an apostate province formerly the most Catholic with the highest rate of abortion in Canada replete with renegade priests Father Gravel and invisible Bishops.

Quebec is going down the drain on so many fronts. Very aggressive secular forces at work and the evil spirit of multiculturalism (i.e. rid yourself completely of your Catholic identity/heritage/past so others can feel welcome). There’s a mayor in Saguenay who’s been harassed for years by a few citizens backed by the «Mouvement laïque du Québec» (I don’t wish hell on anybody but I’ll make an exception for people at the MLQ) simply because he’s an outspoken Catholic and insists on saying a prayer before each meeting. I’m a Quebecer myself and not very hopeful for the future. Saying we’re an apostate nation is true. Many leaders (some openly Catholics) will lose their soul because of their action in getting religion and God out of young Quebecers’ lives. (Pauline Marois was instrumental in getting religion and catechesis out of the schools even if a majority of parents were in favour of it being still taught).

Thank God for that Mayor who has been referred to by"Father"Gravel as the “clown of the Saguenay”.I understand ol’ Ray has been summoned to the Vatican-I hope his Bishop is next.

The gov’t has inserted its “schnoz” as someone said, because the gov’t is paying money to these religious daycares, no? Or am I misunderstanding?

We have some religiously affiliated daycares in our rural USA county, but I’m pretty certain they aren’t accepting any gov’t funds - they are entirely private in nature and can do what they please.

As HSLDA (home school legal defense assn) is always reminding us, once you accept gov’t hand-outs, you are subject to gov’t laws. This is a hard pill for us with special needs kids who find paying for therapies a budget-breaking situation.

Yes, the parents’ contribution is 7$/day per child and the government’s contribution (per child) is more than quadruple that amount. That’s the public system, there’s also a sytem of private daycare centers where it’s 25$ or/day but you get tax deductions and for certain families with a given income, the private system is a better deal at the end of the day. Your point is well taken, but a democratically elected government should also reflect people’s ideas, moral convictions etc.in their policies/decisions. Multiculturalism in that sense is a pestilence. I suspect multiculturalism can also prove a choice instrument for people hell-bent on making Catholicism/monotheist religion history.

Wow. You would think that the Canadian government would not do such a thing. It would be imposing on their constitutional right to freedom of religion, wouldn’t it?

Nowadays, freedom of religion has withered to almost nothing and is now restricted to what goes on inside the four walls of your home. I can only speak for Quebec, but there’s a strong hostility to religion. The slogan “Separation of Church and state” is the “argument” that ends all arguments. Anecdote: in Quebec you have basically 2 political camps who pretty much hate each other’s guts: separatists/sovereignists who want the province of Quebec to be a country, and federalists who want to remain in Canada. Pauline Marois (separatist) and Stéphane Dion (federalist-he was the leader of the Liberal Party not long ago) worked hand in hand to change the constitution to be able to do away with catechesis/religion classes in Quebec primary and secondary (grade 7 to 11) schools. Mrs. Marois is a Catholic, mind you! She even had very good words for Mr. Dion, congratulating him on his cooperation/collaboration. A common goal can make archenemies (which they are, I can assure you) the best of friends, at least for a while.

The Government does not makes money only redistributes the taxes.

It is immoral to use all people’s money to promote a-theism, the Godless education.

It is imposing State worship which is the religion of secular materialists.

The separatistes have pretty much aborted away any chance of de facto seperatism.

Quebec strikes again! Ever since the Quiet Revolution Quebec has moved away from Freedom of Religion to Freedom from Religion.

I suppose I can grudgingly accept that they are justified in trying to ensure that public money does not go towards funding a faith based school. However, some of the measures mentioned in the article are draconian. Not being able to mention the religious significance of a crucifix? Censoring songs? Do Canadians realize that we’ve gotten to the point where we’re censoring songs? Come on, how does it “serve the cause of diversity” to take away everything that makes us different? I’m sure some Quebecois’ dream of the uniformly French, Atheist state will be real diverse.

I wish they would go.Period.But on OUR economic terms. No Canadian passport,no Federal jobs,no CDN currency, plus assumption of their share of the debt. The Native Peoples who own the top part of the province would separate from Quebec as would the Mohawk.I would LOVE to see them try to survive in a sea of 360,000,000 million english speaking North Americans.

I think that it is past time for Quebec to experience the real world without hiding behind Canada’s skirts.Plus they would lose a minimum of 30 per cent of their population and they have the lowest birth rate in North America. In thirty years they would be begging to come back or better yet let them become America’s headache.

I’m sure this comment will upset some Canadians here but Quebec has cried wolf once too often and most Canadians are fed up.

Wow! I guess I am once more brought up short to the difference between the USA and Canada. Our countries seem so similar in so many ways. But here in the USA, any daycare that accepts government funds had to have a fully secular program, no religion “imposed” (hate that word) whatsoever. Its been this way for a long, long time. Well, since before there was any such thing as daycare, that’s for sure.

I’m sorry for what Quebec is going through, but honestly, you guys have enjoyed a religious freedom for ages and ages, which we in the USA never have had. As I stated in my earlier post, accepting any form of government aid here - in hospitals, schooling, daycare, elder care, adoptions… and it comes with strings. And those strings get tighter and tighter as our general society gets more and more secular. Once a religiously based daycare or private school program accepts government aid, they cease to be a religiously based program. End of story. Again, I had no idea it wasn’t so across the border!

We are still fighting for vouchers or tax breaks for those of us who use private schools or home schools instead of public schools. It doesn’t look like that dream will be a reality before my child graduates.

Vouchers is the ONLY way to go.

I do get carried away when I talk/think about what these people are doing. Instead of whishing them ill, I pray God will enlighten their minds and change their hearts.

Bolded part is very well put. I’ll keep that in mind.

Do not spend another second wishing for that, it’s not happening…ever. It was an utopia and utopias tend to not last very long. Economically, Quebec is not viable without the ROC (that would be rest of Canada for our US friends).

Public-funded schools should have remained faith-based as a majority of parents (and I would suspect the population as a whole) were in favour of it. It won’t come from Mr. Charest’s mouth Pax et Bonum, but I want to express my appreciation for the equalization payments that your province is likely to contribute to, especially if you’re an Albertan. I’m frankly worried to press “submit reply” and see how poor my multiquoting skills turn out to be.
