Hungarian greek catholics and hungarian catholics are not the same though

The only Hungarian Catholic Church I knew of was the Latin Rite. I have visited there four times and visited I believe it was a Cathedral in Budapest.

Due to the Communists the Hungarians I knew did not openly practice their faith.

My former husband’s family, on his mother’s side, belonged to a Reformatus (sp) church, which means a reformed protestant church. It was very interesting to attend. His grandmother was well known in the village and her family was the only one with their own pews. The woman sat on one side and the men on the other.

I loved the country, people and the food (not in Budapest) was the best I have ever eaten.

Yours in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary

Hi,

Although I was there 4 times I only visited one church and it was a Latin Rite one.

My ex’s relatives lived near Szatmari. You might try looking up Hevish on the web and see if there is a place that says you can look up your ancestors. I went to Szatmari and at the bottom of the page on the right side it had a little box stating you can look up your ancestors. If that doesn’t work, you might be able to find out about the Hungarian Greek Church from the Hungarian Consulate.

Sorry that I can’t help you other than the above suggestions.

Good Luck in your search.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church arose from the Union of Brest 1595 (Poland at the time). At least three Churches sui iuris eventually arose from the Union of Uzhorod (Ungvar) 1646 (Hungary at the time): Ruthenian (Byzantine in the USA), Slovak, Hungarian. It took awhile to stabalize so the first official Eparchy of Mukacheve occured in 1771. The eparchy of Presov (Slovak) was in 1818.

Year 1913 was the origin of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Eparchy of Hajdudorog with Bishop Stefano Miklósy.

Year 1924 was the origin of the Hungarian Greek Catholic Apostolic Exarchy of Miscolc with Archbishop Antal Papp.

Hi Smad, the Hungarian Greek Catholics in the US are in the care of the Ruthenians. When I was growing up in the sixties we attended St.John the Baptist Church , a Hungarian Greek Catholic parish in Detroit which has been gone for many many years now. I don`t really know if there are any Hungarian Greek Catholic Parishes left in the US or not but would be in the care of the Ruthenians if there are.
Hungarians, from what I understand have been hisotrically predominatly Catholic, but it is kind of interesting. My grand parents were all Hungarian and I had one Reformatus grnadmother(the Hungarian Reformatus Church had a sizable presence in Hungary), one grandmother was Latin Catholics, both grandfathers Greek Catholic. My family came from Szaatmar-Nemeti in the Northeastern part of Hungary. Wish I knew how to go about searching parish registries in Hungary also, good luck with your search.

In Canada, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic is caring for the Hungarian parishes in Welland, Hamilton, and Courtland ON.

In USA, the Byzantine Catholic Church is caring for the Hungarian parishes in
New Britain CT, Perth Amboy NJ, Carteret NJ, Yonkers NY, Manhattan NY, Burton OH, Oregon OH, Youngstown OH, Coatsville PA, Punxsutawney PA.

Thanks Vico and Patchunky for the posts, glad to see there are a few parishes that are Hungarian left:)

Servus!

My grandfather served Hungarian Greek-Catholics during WWII and said they were very pious.

I’m interested in their “ultimate” ethnic background - are they Magyarized Ruthenians?

That is an interesting question. I know that there were other ethnic groups in Hungary. During or after the war with Germany, many Germans were made to go to Hungary. I can’t recall the name that Hungarians called them, as once they were there, many married Hungarians. I recall my husband showing me one of their villages. I think their houses were built in a different manner. Also there were Romanians there also. Before the wall came down, the government didn’t allow certain ethnic groups to be citizens. From my understanding much has changed since I last was there in 1992.

I have a special place in my heart for Hungary and the people. I know a few words, however over the years I forget more and more.

God Bless

Hungarians call german immigrants SVÁB 🙂 Many many germans moved to Hungary actully in the 17th and 18th centuries and germans are still the biggest minority in Hungary. They have cultural centers, lots of schools etc. Sad thing is after the second WW all the countries ruled by the Soviet Union had to deport germans back to Germany 😦

the members of the hungarian greek catholic church are hungarians, germans, russians, slovenians etc who live (or lived) in Hungary. Some experts say that this church is very unique because of all the mixed traditions coming from different nationalities 🙂

God bless!

In my recollection I thought of the word swabs, but didn’t want to say it, as I wasn’t sure it was correct. I know a few words, but spelling it is so difficult. I won’t go into my ex, but he told me SVAB’s were a mixture of German and Hungarian. He was very prejudiced against anyone not fully Hungarian, although he was a 2nd generation Magyar and after our separation I found out the name of his maternal grandmother’s married name was a Gypsy name. I haven’t been in contact with him for years as he turned out to have some serious issues. He was so immersed in everything Hungarian, that we raised and bred only Hungarian dogs and he cooked Hungarian food etc. Although everyone should be proud of their heritage some seem to take it a little too far. I will say he was extremely intelligent and spoke Hungarian perfectly. At least I had the opportunity of visiting Hungary several times and have fond memories of it.

Hello Alex, I have read this online about the Hungarian Greek Catholics being Ruthenized Magyars and I`m sure some of them probably are but I can assure you the Greek Catholics in my family were all Hungarian. Also as I remember it , the Hungarian parish I attended when I was growing up was strictly ethnic and more than half of the parishoners were Hungarian and that included the priest, had Divine Liturgy in Magyar and English.

Hi Zsofia, I can remember my parents/grandparents calling mixed German and Hungarians Svabs, but it seems to me the people they usually referred to as Schvabs had German last names.

Yes, those Germans would probably have been the Danube Swabians who were persecuted by their own government and who settled in different places throughout Eastern Europe.

We have six Hungarian Greek-Catholic parishes up here along with Roumanian Greek-Catholics.

There were Ukrainians/Ruthenians living in “Marmarosh Orsag” who were heavily Magyarized. I will have to visit a parish and speak to the parish priest about this!

Cheers,

Alex
