While I do wish Haymitch had more “onstage” time, I don’t think he should have been the main character. He’s too far removed from the horror
It wouldn’t work if Haymitch was the main character.
However, I talked to an 18 year old girl who liked the first two books but was bored by the third. She didn’t go beyond the first 200 pages.

The third book was all fighting from beginning to end. It was boring.

Much better would have been to have Katniss and Haymitch working closely together. Haymitch could have explained everything he’s done over the years to organize, lead or help the rebels.
Along the way, Haymitch could have revealed more of his humanity. Why was he alcoholic? Since we learn nothing about what Katniss feels and thinks about anything, what does Haymitch feel and think about things? Listening to what Haymitch has to say about his inner self, Katniss might have reacted sympathetically, and she’d look more human too.
As for the horror element, Haymitch could have been killed off at the end.

This would not take anything away from Katniss who has been the symbolic leader of the rebels. And then she does her final action which we can’t forget.

What could be interesting– Book 4: The Haymitch Story. It’s a condensed version of the series. but Haymitch’s POV. Maybe 2 books if necessary

I don’t think Haymitch could hold reader’s attention for an entire book if he had more “stage time” than Katniss. Like him thought we may, it’s still Katniss’s story.

Maybe Suzanne Collins could be convinced to start over with one book presenting the 75th Hunger Games, the quarterly games of book two and the final assault on the Capitol,
but this time have Haymitch work closely with Katniss from day one to the end.

That would be an interesting book.

I personally know that you can get a lot of story squeezed into one book,
because I did it with Empress Theresa.
