It wouldn’t work if Haymitch was the main character. While I do wish Haymitch had more “onstage” time, I don’t think he should have been the main character. He’s too far removed from the horror
However, I talked to an 18 year old girl who liked the first two books but was bored by the third. She didn’t go beyond the first 200 pages.
The third book was all fighting from beginning to end. It was boring.
Much better would have been to have Katniss and Haymitch working closely together. Haymitch could have explained everything he’s done over the years to organize, lead or help the rebels.
Along the way, Haymitch could have revealed more of his humanity. Why was he alcoholic? Since we learn nothing about what Katniss feels and thinks about anything, what does Haymitch feel and think about things? Listening to what Haymitch has to say about his inner self, Katniss might have reacted sympathetically, and she’d look more human too.
As for the horror element, Haymitch could have been killed off at the end.
This would not take anything away from Katniss who has been the symbolic leader of the rebels. And then she does her final action which we can’t forget.
