Pax tecum!

lol, I’m sorry, Holly, I didn’t even see your post before I posted mine! I hope you don’t think I was yelling at you with all those “???” I had in there!:o

There are some Protestant hymns (the more traditional ones; certainly the Anglican Church has some good music) that I don’t have a big problem with, but I still don’t see why those would be given preference over Catholic hymns. To hear “Ave Verum Corpus” (Hail, True Body), you’ll have to get to a church that has a choir that does polyphony…and that’s a little hard to find these days. Perhaps at the cathedral where you live? What state are you in, if you don’t mind my asking (someone might know of a church that does this kind of music close to where you are)?

In Christ,
Rand
Haha, no, it’s okay.🙂 I do actually go to the Cathedral in Nashville, TN. And I love it.🙂

Beth Nielsen Chapman has a beautiful album of 12 Catholic hymns (mostly in Latin) called Hymns. And the lyrics for them are easily found on the 'net.

Your “Where Love Is Found” seems like it might be just a little bit squishy doctrinally, but not bad, maybe even pretty good, IMO.

“In Every Age” seems quite good. I’d be happy if they played that one in our parish.

Here are some hymns I like:
To Jesus Christ our Sovereign King
Joyful, Joyful we adore Thee
Immaculate Mary, thy praises we sing
Hail Holy Queen enthroned aboved
Faith of our Fathers
Thanks for the ideas! But you’ve got me scratchin’ my head about “Where Love is Found,” though. Where do you find it “squishy?” Most of the text either directly quotes or is a very close paraphrase of St. Paul.

ughh…

I hear your frustration. Here is the only resource you need.

adoremus.org/ChurchDocs.html

Click on the Music link to the left. There you’ll find several very well-written articles that chronicle and prove the ridiculousness of modern Church “music” (vice, “Hymns”…)

cheers

I hate anything in Church that sounds like it belongs on a carousel!

Here in this place, new light is streaming (up goes the horse)
Now is the darkness vanished away (down goes the horse)
See in this space our fears and our dreamings(up goes the horse)
Brought here to you in the light of this day (you get the idea!)

I can’t help it. Most of these modern songs remind me of going up and down on the boardwalk carousel whether I like them or not.
I’m with Bombay on his tune selections. It’s all about the location they are played.

My kids are in a choir that pretty much only uses the Adoremus Hymnal. They sound heavenly and angelic. No carousel thoughts when I hear them!

My wife has recently started choosing the music for the mass she plays at. i jokingly told her that i hoped that meant we would no longer be subjected to “Morning Has Broken”. She took me seriously and it hasnt been played since. i was wondering if you could choose one and only one hymn to ban what it would be?

May the Saints preserve us from ever having to sing “Gather Us In” again! Silly melody, awful lyrics, totally unsuitable for the Mass.

“Table of Plenty”

I like many contemporary songs. (How new does something have to be to be labeled contemporary?) And I also love sacred polyphony. I like Gregorian chant if it is sung mainly by well trained male voices and the acoustics of the church are good (which is often not true with modern architecture.)

But I can’t stand “Table of Plenty”.

After taking over as music director, I have succesfully banned several hymns from the rotation. These include among others:

-Here I am Lord
-Eagle’s Wings
-Gather Us In
-Glory and Praise
-A Mighty Fortress (something about singing this in a Catholic just doesn’t sit right with me)
-City of God

Additionally, as of November, the Mass of Creation will be no more.

This doesn’t mean I’ve eliminated all of the Hagen/Haas et al… output. There’s some that I rather like, but while I am at the church, these particular hymns will not be heard. My pastor has given me full support too.

We’ve also gotten away from the Owen Alstott psalmody. I actually am rather neutral to most of his music, but the pastor is pretty adament about getting rid of those.

Pax vobiscum!

I’d start with any song written by a Protestant. Especially anything that requires electric guitars and drums.

Rand

After hearing it rendered…limb from limb…from every pathetic excuse for a singer; after suffering through hundreds of badly played, out-of-tune bagpipes, AMAZING GRACE:mad:

What’s wrong with Glory And Praise? It doesn’t seem heretical in anyway or offensive. Is it the melody you dislike?

Peace Is Flowing Like a River” (Not that I have anything against Peace)

I think it’s the melody – it just seems to draaag out.

PAX,

Jullien

.
Oh, no! I really like singing this song…I can never finish w/o crying. I feel like I’m talking w/ our Lord.

*Here I am Lord. It is I Lord * …ok, where is the tissue. 😉
