I’m an atheist. My Catholic father thinks I’ll go to heaven

Jumping into conclusions is something I’m trying to avoid.

Connect the dots, my friend. 😉
Gorgias, whatever you meant here, do you mind elaborating how you feel about your view that atheists go to hell? Are you sad for them? Scared for them?Angry at their suffering? Confused? Which of these is the wink for?

Simple. You claimed that the citation of the catholic.com web page was irrelevant to the posts here. I connected the dots for you in that post, to demonstrate how it applied to the current discussion.

The Church doesn’t teach that atheists must go to hell, so I don’t believe it either.

However, you’re a Catholic, who later turned to atheism. That’s quite a different situation. If you knew that the Church taught the truth and then later left the Church, that’s different than never having accepted the Church’s teachings. And, it has different effects. That’s what’s got your father worried (and rationalizing on your behalf).
Are you sad for them? Scared for them?Angry at their suffering? Confused?
I think I would say that I hope you can find a way to again believe in the logic of the Catholic position. (I know that this is my personal experience – I researched Catholic theology and the Bible as an adult, and ‘read myself back into the Church’. I would hope you can find your way back again, too.
Which of these is the wink for?
None of them. It was because you refused to see the connection between the posts. 😉

“Why would anybody want to be part of a thing they do not believe in?” (That’s the bigger question).

With God blessing you with a catholic father who I presume practices bis faith, then I dont see the invincible ignorant argument here bro. For God has indeed given you an example in your dad. Ill be praying for you.

You will definitely not go to heaven due to the fact that you are denying Christ by being an Atheist!

Thanks bro.

Maybe I need to edit my OP to be more clear? 279 posts here and only a handful that even attempt to empathize and answer my question…

I’m making the argument that under Catholic teaching, I, as an agnostic, atheist, non-believer, whatever label people want to use…will go to hell. My dad is arguing against that line of reasoning, as I’ve explained many times above. This is not something uncomfortable/scary to me. It is something I’ve not heard before (in my journey of deconversion), and was curious if it was familiar to other Catholics.

I’m getting the feeling that most people here have never met a non-believer, let alone tried to see/understand the world from their perspective (ie walk in their shoes). Hence, so many responses like yours.

I don’t believe in god either. I believe in God, personal pronouns are capitalised.

Not familiar with that point of view, I think it may be some sort unique rationalization. Haven’t heard of it until now.

Hmm basically for many itll be a maybe that you’ll go to heaven( just like all of us," taken from Jesus saying so that we might live ), since Jesus says, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make Our home with him. Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. The word that you hear is not My own, but it is from the Father who sent Me."

If we dont acknowledge him or get to know him then we will never know salvation, seeing as your “very catholic” father is telling you about Jesus or the faith you can’t blame ignorance for choice, seeing as how there is an effort to post online to pose the question. And many Atheists crumble when true followers will tell you Jesus didn’t stop sin because it has to happen, it’s mentioned in the scriptures and he himself said he did not come to bring peace until his second coming. As he says,"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword,
For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law–
a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” If you have no interest in Jesus or Heaven then he will not look twice, we must repent and believe the good news and turn to him always. Here he tells you that we must look at him with true sincerity and give our life for him even letting go of Family Members who are against the Faith, be grateful the Lord helps your Father and others with the Patience to listen to “Atheists” babble about how fake the Church is, quite the opposite you might be surprised if you ask knock you will recieve your answer.
He also states,“Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.” So if you are doing this then its explicit in the bible.

So a short summary of the above states that you may turn against the faith but if you have continually denied it then it will deny you until you ask for forgiveness and submit willfully with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are many Saints one in Particular is St. Augustine who might be of help towards your lack of Faith! Jesus actually ate with Sinners(Atheists) included to change their views instead of with Just people. Keep Reading the Bible!

And people wonder why me, an American atheist, are so closeted in our lives (e.g. coming to this anonymous message board to get my question answered).

Teddy, do you have any inclination/desire to read my OP and to try to answer my sincere question? Or is my mere existence, as someone with differing views from yours, the only inspiration for such an efforted response/rebuttal?
