:banghead: To have faith in the Creator of all is the most gratifying gift I have ever been given. To the one who profess not to believe and have this out look that He is a vengeful, evil, punishing god that demand complete submission I say to you this.

He Is like unto a father that has told his child if you do _____ ( fill in the blank) you will punished. pick the punishment you wish here.

He gave us rules he has told us that if we follow the rule not only will we be with Him for all eternity, but life here will be easier and better.

We choose, if it were other wise he would not have a true purpose. In God we find Love Apart from him we find death.

Man created evil when he choose to disobey. So it comes down to a every simple choice; do we do as our parents tell us and have a harmonious home life. Or do we rebel and bring about discord ( sin).

It lies within us no one here can say anything to change your opinion of Our Creator. And He is not hiding from you or science.

Peace in the Lord:gopray2:

So what is ‘irreducibly complex’, ontologysue? Also, if it can be reduced, does your opinion change? Or just your arguments?
I will keep it brief:

1)The DNA in each cell has 3 1/2 billion nucleotide bases. That simple fact tells us that there is more information in each cell than in 3 complete sets of Encyclopedia Britannica.
  1. Each cell in the body makes 2000 proteins every second. According to Scientific American this process is so complex that it would take a supercomputer, programed with the rules of protein folding, billions of years. It takes only seconds in each cell of the human body.
It defies logic that this kind of “intelligent complexity” could have formed randomly from chemical units. Mathematical minds far greater than mine have called the probability “neglegent.”

What the DNA/RNA scientists are discovering is that the salient point is not even the astonishing speed and efficiency with which these messages are carried, but the fact that they are “messages” and this, logically deduced, implies intelligence, “embodied intelligence in a set of signs that have their own meaning.”

So, as Lord Kelvin, a mathematical prodigy, once said, “if you study science deep enough and long enough, it will force you to believe in God.”

Amen and Amen

It’s the clarity of religious terms that makes it so easy to discuss them.😉
But that’s what makes them so interesting, too!

Regarding your question about faith transcending reason:

If you meant my personal faith, I certainly do not claim it to be superior to your reasoning. It is extremely personal, and I only hold that it transcends my own human reasoning. I say this because there are many things which cause my human reasoning to say “But, but, but… how can that be? That doesn’t make sense! That’s not fair!”

At the same time, I have come to the realization that there are countless things in this world that I will never understand. I know one thing: I sure didn’t create myself, and I didn’t put myself on the earth. I am just a poor sap, feeling my way through life and figuring it out as I go. Love and faith motivate me, and they are sufficient. There is nothing that the Internet or any other type of technology can do that will convince you of that.

If you were referring to my heritage (and yours), the Catholic Faith, you can research it just as easily as I can. Study the history, the Early Church Fathers, the Councils, and the numerous writings and encyclicals.

I have to disagree here, S4J. Just because someone created something doesn’t mean that they know everything about it. Look at the internet - some few people created it, and those few have no way of knowing all of it’s contents…
Yes, good point. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that if you or i come to the conclusion that the universe was purposefully and intelligently designed, then you or i might conclude that if the designer does not know all there is to know, he certainly knows more than the collective knowledge of all human beings.

…I don’t agree with this, either. If there were a god who created everything, assuming that this god is hiding from us is just a little paranoid to me. Why would I agree that we can’t know about this god just because he doesn’t want us to? We learn plenty from beings that don’t cooperate.
I stand corrected again. It’s ironic that you are agreeing with the only author of the Bible who is described as a man after God’s own heart! This author David wrote the words:

1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.
(Psalm 19)
I suppose you are correct that i could learn much from that which this God created.

…The universe is not evidence of a god, or a creator. It is evidence only of the universe. …
In response to your objection i’d like to ask you to take a moment to consider this: Have you ever stopped to think that the Web browser you are viewing, and the operating system running on your computer, and the Web page you download from catholic.com are all, in essence, computer language that is merely a series of ones and zeros? I mean, these numbers

10001000100101001010101100100001110100011100111010 10110011010000111011000010111101011011101110000101 10111010111011011100100010101101000101110100010101 10110000010111010001011011010000000011011011110110 10010111010011010110111111010110101001000101011100 01100110101110010110101000110110101110110100010110

could actually mean something to a computer. It might be the binary code to display one simple graphic of the Web page you are now viewing, or it might be only garbage that means absolutely nothing. What gives binary language meaning is the order of the numbers. Get one number out of place or remove one number from the code and it is completely meaningless. Get all the numbers right and in exactly the correct order and the result is a Web page or software application on a PC, Mac, or SmartPhone that does some pretty impressive stuff!

My question to you A is this:

If you could consider the binary computer language behind all programming code that is behind all the Graphic User Interface you take for granted every day, these series of ones and zeros are no accident. Would you agree?

…Excellent, here we are at evidence that your described god could not exist. … If he knows everything and is all powerful, how come there are so many errors and contradictions in the bible? Is it possible that it is not a fax from heaven? …
More than 20 years ago i asked much the same question of a major in the U.S. Army. His answer astonished me. He said that he had been reading the Bible for many years and had never found one contradiction.

It dawned on me that i had heard it said on TV and in conversations that the Bible was overflowing with contradictions, but i had never heard someone give one example of a bona fide one. This began my search. I have been reading the Bible ever since then. I have even read it cover-to-cover several times, looking for such contradictions, but have found none.

Perhaps i have been careless in my investigation. Will you point out one of these many contradictions you have found, A?

…If he knows all, and is all powerful, how is it that he keeps failing utterly in his attempts to eliminate sin? He created sin, and satan, so why does he ‘lose’ so many souls? If he were really all-powerful, wouldn’t it be a lot simpler to tell which religions were nonsense and which were not? I mean by average, ordinary people…
You have asked several extremely good and thoughtful questions. I only have time now to give my honest opinion and answer to one of them.

Your first question is why does not God eliminate sin? My answer is that if God were to judge all sin today, A, would you or i or anyone be left standing tomorrow? The truth is that i think, say or do things i hate every day. I fail to think, say or do things i really know i should do and even want to do every day. At the end of the day, when i take an honest look at myself in the mirror, i do not like who i see. I wonder what the God who is perfect in all he says, thinks and does thinks of me.

I’ve asked why God does not wipe out all that is evil and be done with it, as the human race (me included) have made such a mess of things. Then i’m reminded of the words:

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

(2 Peter 3:9)
Why does God not wipe us all off the face of the earth and give us what we deserve? Jesus answered the question:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

(John 3:16)

Nonsense. The universe and everytrhing in it was a creation.
I can still see by your signature that you are truly afraid of doubting. I hope you get over your fear of insulting the divinity by using the brain you were born with.

As I said before, it’s not doubt in general, it’s doubt in God.

Maybe you could answer this post for me. I included Stephen Hawking’s lectures for reference.

I’m particularly interested in
  • If singularity is finite, how did it come into existence.
  • If singularity is eternal, then there is no concept of age/ time Nothing is old or new (in it, or from it) it’s just the eternal now. Everything that is in it or from it would be eternal and has no age, no beginning no end…
    So which is it?

…Your god either *likes *all the evil that exists and *planned *it that way, making him evil, or is not all-powerful or all-good.

Certainly not worthy of my worship. What has this being done to demonstrate that I should worship it? By the way, I don’t worship power.
Yes, the god you describe is not worthy of worship. I do not blame you for withholding love for such a beast. Yet, it remains to be seen if this God you describe is the one in whom i trust and try to obey and love.

You are completely right, and wise, to say that if God exists, he should be good, or he does not deserve your worship or mine. This is a wise statement, and one worth exploring. So, i’d very much like to know, A, how do you define good?

I will keep it brief:
I tried to do the same. This is a deep subject. I had to go ask a friend to help me understand a little more about the matter. I will share some of his thoughts with you (and some of mine)
1)The DNA in each cell has 3 1/2 billion nucleotide bases. That simple fact tells us that there is more information in each cell than in 3 complete sets of Encyclopedia Britannica.
If one assumes that each nucleotide comprises 2 bits of information (because there are 4 possible nucleotides), then one can assign a naive “bit size” to a genome. The problem being that if one does this, one finds anomalies quite readily. Not the least of which being that there are single celled life forms whose genomes are far larger than the human genome - the amoeba species Amoeba dubia has a genome whose size is 6 × 10[sup]11[/sup] bp (base pairs), which is over 200 times larger than the human genome, meaning that on the basis of this naive measure, that amoeba is over 200 times more complex than a human being. Bit of a blow there for the idea that humans are somehow the “pinnacle of creation”, don’t you think?
All of this data is readily available from publicly declared complete genome sequencing projects, many of whom have placed their entire genome sequencing databases online and which are user searchable for specific genes.
  1. Each cell in the body makes 2000 proteins every second. According to Scientific American this process is so complex that it would take a supercomputer, programed with the rules of protein folding, billions of years. It takes only seconds in each cell of the human body.
We might need supercomputers to determine protein folding by analysis of the constituent amino acids, but the proteins themselves do not. They fold in accordance with well understood laws of stereochemistry. The reason it takes a supercomputer to analyse protein folding is that for large assemblages of amino acids, the computations required for an analysis multiply enormously. However, the molecules in question just respond to the electrostatic forces involved, and fold in accordance with those electrostatic forces - they don’t need any ‘guiding hand’ to do this. In fact, the process can be observed taking place using femtosecond laser pulses and observed in real time.
It defies logic that this kind of “intelligent complexity” could have formed randomly from chemical units.
Tell me, ontologysue, does it really defy logic? The fact that supercomputers can work with it at all tells me that some logic can be applied. Is it possible that this was just a turn of phrase to describe your lack of understanding of the subject? I know that I don’t understand it very well, but just because I don’t understand something, I don’t automatically assume it is evidence of a creator.
So, as Lord Kelvin, a mathematical prodigy, once said, “if you study science deep enough and long enough, it will force you to believe in God.”
When did he say this? Hundreds of years ago, wasn’t it? That is a long way into the past to go for an authority to argue from.
By the way, isn’t ‘argument from authority’ the wrong sort of argument to use when trying to stay logical?

If you were referring to my heritage (and yours), the Catholic Faith, you can research it just as easily as I can. Study the history, the Early Church Fathers, the Councils, and the numerous writings and encyclicals.
It is catholic history and reading the bible (and reading *about *the bible) are what removed any belief in Yahweh (or Jehovah, or whatever name he uses at this time)

My question to you A is this:

If you could consider the binary computer language behind all programming code that is behind all the Graphic User Interface you take for granted every day, these series of ones and zeros are no accident. Would you agree?
I have a clock on my desk at work which displays the time in binary. I know the basics of that number system. It is not much different than our decimal system, aside from the number of available digits.

What is the point of mentioning different numbering systems?

There are 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary, and those who don’t.😉

Perhaps i have been careless in my investigation. Will you point out one of these many contradictions you have found, A?
Jeremiah 3:12I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever.
Jeremiah 17:4Ye have kindled a fire in mine anger, which shall burn for ever.

There is one to start…there are many.

As I said before, it’s not doubt in general, it’s doubt in God.
This is why is is fairly pointless to continue. If someone discovered solid proof that your god didn’t exist, you would still hold to your signature.
