Why do people who see these quotes and seize on them totally ignore all the teachings and quotes about love? There are entire chapters about love in the New Testament.
AOG

I would expect to find alot about love in the Holy bible. I would not expect to find the mass amount of killing, etc.
I suppose that is why it is brought up.

Atheism is a nice concept but it’s concept is much the same as our mind in childhood.

That when we as children wanting to do what we wanted when we wanted to do it without ramification.

That we would rationalize that when our parents told us to be home before dark meant to be home when it got dark.

That if were told not to run in the house and got caught we would ratioinalize that we were walking fast but not running.

Atheist’s needs this as atheism when it meets truth must make that truth what they want it to mean not that of any authority figure esspecially when it would get in the way of their desires or needs.

The 2nd point of Atheists is rebellion as when we were children we had a need to show our inndepence and this was done through rebellion.

The point of this rebellion at times made sense and other times did not. The issues relating to this rebellion had to deal with dominance over another not that we as children really gave a hoot on the cause or the results of our rebellion.

So the major challenge to most Atheists is truth, evidence, and to maintain social norms leaves them in a class all their own

The 3rd point of Atheism is of course mythesism.

Now as a child there are things that occurr to us that we children would create heroes or monsters as causes and explanations of things we do not understand. This is a way to punish others in our minds or destroy us if we took unnecessary chances for it Cannot be a higher power or authority figure.

Now the atheist must have this if he as an adult to explain the unexplainable( a phenomenom ).

So an Atheists is one who does not like law or goverment as a whole or anything that would place any type of controls or hinderances on what they want to do when they want to do it. An Anarchist when necessary and an observer when things going well

Anyway. I may have been wrong, and am prepared to entertain A’s qualifications at biblical interpretation. A, can you present your qualifications? Have you studied Greek? Hebrew? Theology? Philosophy? Church history?

For that matter, have you, lkddav?
NE

I didn’t realize I needed to be qualified to interpret the bible.
I was under the impression god would leave the earth to the meek.

The bible is god’s guidebook. You are saying that the majority of his creation isn’t smart enough to understand his guidebook.

Sure does make alot of sense.

Of course you need to be qualified to interpret the bible. You need to be qualified to do anything. You’re just disagreeing on the amount of qualification needed.

I’ve said it about a dozen times in this thread, but apparently you haven’t noticed yet - the Bible was never intended to be sufficient.

No I would not because you would still believe in a god. You’d be wrong in your beliefs, but athiesm requires no belief in a god of any kind. If you believed your computer was a god, you would not be an atheist…

I never said i worshiped the trolls as gods. I only said i believed they existed.

That probably sounded odd to someone just visiting this page. 😃

For you, A, or Phooney to interpet. Here is the first section in chapter 1 in the book of Matthew.

Now interpet this for us as my money is that the truth here will not be apparent to you making you unqualified to interpet scripture.

Give it a try.

Both of these examples are, of course, derived from the Judeo-Christian God. So are you conceding that there is something unique about that entity?
All stories have unique elements. Well, all popular stories seem to, anyway. I don’t see that unique claims make for some special kind of evidence.

Right - tithe is needed, too. I guess that church needs more gold to plate the popes bullet-proof car.

I hope you don’t mind me starting slow. Could you please tell me how Jesus was related to David and Abraham?

Testing… here’s a photo I took last February, the original is much too high resolution at over 4mb for this forum, but this was a great day.

Beautiful pic phooney, thanks for posting.
I just discovered that hot chocolate is quite improved by adding a liqueur called ‘Frangelico’.
Yummm

And I’ve just discovered that listening to a DVD of Led Zeppelin tonight is great 🙂

I was responding to what someone thought I believed made an atheist. I was simply saying that just because other people worship other gods other than my own, doesn’t mean I think they’re atheist.

WOW! That is BEAUTIFUL!!!
That’s off the coast of Kaikoura in New Zealand if anybody is interested. Those are dusky dolphins.

I have lost count of how many dolphins are actually in that photo, you can see so many of them underwater, as well as a few breaking the water off to the right, and a few in mid air in the background as well.

I’m really jealous right now! :o

I don’t understand. You’re saying that scary descriptions of hell are scare tactics, to draw people to church. And you’re also saying that non-scary descriptions of hell are tricks to draw people to church.
Hello NE

Thirty years ago the church message was " come to church and get right with the lord or burn in hell". You didn’t have to use your imagination to invision hell. They had films of people burning in fire being tortured. If that wasn’t what hell was, as described in the bible, what was it?

Over the years the message of the church has become for the most part " come to our church, we are tolerable, we think hell means a seperation from god etc.

People have moved away from the “fire and brimstone” preachers to the Joel Osteen " i’ll tell you what you want to hear’ ministers.

In doing so the church’s have watered down hell to attract more people, in my opinion.
Anyway, going back to your impressive biblical quote mining. You posted 18 verses. Quite scary! But wait a moment… of those 18, five of them (Mat 5:29, Mat10:28, Mat 11:23, Mat 16:18, Mat 23:33) say nothing about hell at all, other than to mention it as a possible destination. Still, 13 scary descriptions of hell! Clearly, I stand corrected.
It was a list of quotes pertaining to hell. My quotes on hell were pertaining to another post. I did not say they were scary. They were examples of someone being thrown into hell. You attributed the quotes to the post i made to S4J. You were dishonest in doing this.
But hold on… five more of those quotes (Luk 16:23, Mat 8:12, Mat 22:13, Luk 13:28, Mat 25:30) don’t provide any description other than “wailing and gnashing of teeth”. In other words, people are unhappy there. As I have said all along.
Luke 16:23 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

I interpret this to be in the traditional hell. I will agree that the other four could simply mean in great pain also.
Leaving eight scaaaaary passages. Not bad. Although Mar 9:43 and 9:47 really aren’t separate passages, are they? They’re separate sentences in one passage. Ditto for Mat 13:42 and 13:50. So, without even delving into the context of the passages you quoted, we’ve gone from 18 to 6.
Further, Matthew 18:9 and Mark 9:47 are the same exact passage, in different gospels. Hardly seems fair to count it twice.
In Mat 13:42 and 13:50 jesus says the will be thrown into fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I interpret this as jesus describing the tradional hell. He didn’t say you would be throw into a place of “seperation” or a place of "unhappiness.

Mar 9:43 and 47 are exactly what i intended them to be. An example of someone being thrown into hell. Again you are dishonest.

Mat 18:9 and Mark 9:47 are another example of being thrown into hell. They are the same passage and it isn’t fair to count them twice. I’ll give you that one, i missed it. 😉
James 3:6: “[the tongue] is set on fire by hell”. Look at the entire passage. This is referring to people’s speech. It doesn’t mean that teachers tongues are literally on fire.
3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

I agree that it is referring to speech. I interpret this to mean that running your mouth could land you in hell. Like you said, take it with a grain of salt.

Scarier than hell is an atheists outlook and that is–

You are no better than the lowest forms of life on earth and that when you die the worms and bugs will eat you as you are to be forever no more.

So as a result of this one must be as selfish and self centered as what you have now is it. So if it feels good do it! If it threads on others but is self proclaimimg and you can get away with it do it.

For as I stated earlier with an atheist mind-set there has been no goverment / Civilization that has occurred in that mind set, leaders knowing this made themselves gods for the people they governed. in order to survive, or add anything to mankind and history.

There has been no goverment in history that flourished without a god figure and there were no atheists societies esspecially that controlled what atheists believe to be "their own destiny "
