Yes, its not fair for me to jump into the conversation after leaving for a week and to expect you to have it fresh in your mind! 🙂

To put it simply, scientists have been trying for many years to create DNA using just the four chemicals that make up the 64 nucleotides that compose DNA. Try as they may to simulate the natural occurrences of primeval earth, they have failed to create any functioning genetic code.

Since they have failed, there is currently no scientific evidence (i.e., no result of any scientific experimentation) that shows that DNA can be created by natural occurrences. The only DNA scientists have is that which they extract from living or dead cells of existing or deceased organisms.

So, science has failed to show how DNA could be created in the first place. Religion steps in and says it is God, creator of all life, who programmed genetic code. You cannot argue with this on scientific grounds, for there is no scientific evidence, yet.

Your only recourse is to argue against God creating life on some other grounds other than scientific. The question is, what proof besides scientific evidence would you use to demonstrate there is no God?
Are you saying here that if DNA is created by scientists in the labratory, you will cease your belief in god?

Are you suggesting that if scientists can’t figure it out right now, then it must have been a god that did it?

I think that is called ‘argument from ignorance’.

Why do people who see these quotes and seize on them totally ignore all the teachings and quotes about love? There are entire chapters about love in the New Testament.
Speaking for myself, I brought those up because someone raised the subject.
I will not avoid looking at the horrible parts of the bible, I don’t see any reasons why I should.

I confess - it was I who told A that he was not qualified to interpret the Bible.

My earlier statement was that he’s not qualified because he’s not a member of the Magisterium. I suppose I can back off from that position a little bit, since it would preclude everybody on the forum. 🙂 Unless there’s any bishops here that I don’t know about… anyone? Anyone?

Anyway. I may have been wrong, and am prepared to entertain A’s qualifications at biblical interpretation. A, can you present your qualifications? Have you studied Greek? Hebrew? Theology? Philosophy? Church history?

For that matter, have you, lkddav?
Still, it looks like you are trying to suggest that one needs quite specialized training to properly understand the bible. That is a fine argument against the bible being divinely inspired.
Why was your god unable to produce a bible that was clear and unambiguous?
I would expect more from an all-knowing being.

Man is quite capable of creating and alterating life forms here on earth, but these will be man.s and not God’s creatures, remember in Eden Man ate from the tree of knowledge

God does have the final say though and Man can do nothing without him for what man does utimately results in death without Him.

The Tower of Babel, Sodom and Gamora, etc…

Case in point God created man and man then makes man. But man cannot create God for God is eternal.

The trick for man is not how to replicate life but to conquer death.

That would only be true if God’s intention was for the Bible alone to be sufficient. That was never the intent, as I have said about a million times. That’s why He established a church.

Which, two thousand years later, has money. Yeah, I know, it is therefore untrustworthy. Yawn.

Out of curiosity, would the church be more trustworthy in your estimation if it had virtually no money? Like, say, for the first several centuries of its existence?

Not really, because trust is earned, so motivating billions can be noted when assessing a situation, but it would be false to suggest that a lack of money made for a more trustworthy organization.
Why does your god need money anyway?

Hello S4J

This post made me chuckle! I have read many of your posts. I think you understand hell very well 😉
When i was about 13 I went to see a movie about hell in a local church. I remember a “sinner” getting killed on a motorbike. Of course he went to hell. He was engulfed in flame, people crawling on him bitting, and worms crawling through his skin.

Even at that age I realized when I came out of that movie that it was nothing but a scare tactic. I went ahead with the program and got saved. I faked that, even cried a little. 🙂 After that I stayed home and watched Star trek on sunday morning. A much more productive day. 🙂

By the quotes in the bible that I posted above, that is the tradional Hell. Burning in fire and gnashing of teeth. It is repeated more than once.

Over the years it seems that the tradional hell is being replaced by sayings such as, “it’s not a nice place”, “a place that is not pleasant”, " a place void of god".

This is just an attempt to make the bible more “user friendly” to attract more converts, in my opinion.

I don’t understand. You’re saying that scary descriptions of hell are scare tactics, to draw people to church. And you’re also saying that non-scary descriptions of hell are tricks to draw people to church.

Anyway, going back to your impressive biblical quote mining. You posted 18 verses. Quite scary! But wait a moment… of those 18, five of them (Mat 5:29, Mat10:28, Mat 11:23, Mat 16:18, Mat 23:33) say nothing about hell at all, other than to mention it as a possible destination. Still, 13 scary descriptions of hell! Clearly, I stand corrected.

But hold on… five more of those quotes (Luk 16:23, Mat 8:12, Mat 22:13, Luk 13:28, Mat 25:30) don’t provide any description other than “wailing and gnashing of teeth”. In other words, people are unhappy there. As I have said all along.

Leaving eight scaaaaary passages. Not bad. Although Mar 9:43 and 9:47 really aren’t separate passages, are they? They’re separate sentences in one passage. Ditto for Mat 13:42 and 13:50. So, without even delving into the context of the passages you quoted, we’ve gone from 18 to 6.
Further, Matthew 18:9 and Mark 9:47 are the same exact passage, in different gospels. Hardly seems fair to count it twice.

James 3:6: “[the tongue] is set on fire by hell”. Look at the entire passage. This is referring to people’s speech. It doesn’t mean that teachers tongues are literally on fire.

Matthew 13:40: “So just as the tares are gathered up and burned with fire, so shall it be at the end of the age.” Doesn’t this metaphorical context strongly imply that the “furnace of fire” in verse 42 could be, you guessed it, a metaphor? Jesus was just talking about removal of weeds (by fire).

Out of your original 18, we are left with two verses (Mat 5:22, Mat 18:9) that mention hellfire, and one (Mat 24:51) that mentions “cutting asunder”. The last one is buried in a metaphor about slaves waiting for the master of the household… I’m really not sure what to make of it.

What do we conclude? A couple things. For one, your whopping list of 18 quotes was either dishonest or incompetent. If you had looked at the verses at all, you would have seen that most of them didn’t serve to reinforce your position, they just made your list longer, so as to appear impressive. Kind of like a kitty cat puffing itself up. 😛

Second, what do the verses actually teach us about hell? Jesus refers to fire in a couple places that are not obviously metaphorical. Does that mean that liberal theologians’ opinions are invalid? By no means. The only thing we can take away from these verses with confidence is that hell is undesirable. What a shock. Does this contradict current church teaching? By no means.

I guess I’m having trouble understanding A and lkddav’s opinion that this teaching has been watered down, to attract more converts. It just isn’t clicking for me. Converts don’t go to hell. People who die in a state of mortal sin go to hell. What potential convert would say “Well, I would sign up if sinners’ souls were stranded in eternal limbo after death, but this business of fire… see ya!”

By the way, I have no specialized training in biblical interpretation, and my opinions should be taken with a grain of salt except inasmuch as they are hopefully in line with church teaching.

Who said God needs money?

Oh wait, you’re cleverly implying that because God doesn’t need money, the church shouldn’t need money. Well… priests gotta eat. Towns don’t give away land. Contractors don’t build churches for free. Utility companies have to be paid.

Also, there is the fact that the Catholic church is the most charitable organization in the history of the world. How could that be, if not by the generous donations of parishioners?

where did you get this info. from?

Holland is a Monachry goverment and it’s towns are called for the most part parishes (why that word parishes sounds familar)

Holland is currently 83% Christian,

Holland has in the recent past limited the amount of non Christian immigrants into it’s country in order to maintain it’s rich Christian heritage.

This reminds me of a story I heard…

A group of scientists come up to God and say

“God, we don’t need you anymore… we have learned to create life all on our own. We can make single celled organisms just from dirt. From these organisms we can make complex creatures and so on. Face it God, you’re outdated…”

God looks at them and says.

“That’s great guys, congratulations…”
“But get your OWN dirt!”

😃

This is a lie. I answered this question on page 48, post 720 of this thread. Here it is again…

(Hi 659

Evidence you ask? Your god recreating the first 6 days of creation on the moon. Don’t brush this off. If you have a god this is just mere child’s play for him or her. It is a god, correct. It can do this with a snap of a finger.

In the four gospels, jesus said nine times if you are a believer your prays would be answered. You are a believer. Pray that this happens. If it doesn’t your jesus was lying. He plainly said if you believe your prayer WOULD be answered. )

This would be sufficient evidence for the world and myself.

I think this will be the forth time i have asked you for a answer.

Can you and your god provide this evidence or not?? A simple yes or no will do.

lkddav
Again what is hard to understand. I asked a question and would like an answer.

What you have given me is another question. An answer does not end is a question mark.

I will not accept your answer to a question being a question or an answer as a request

I think you are afraid of your own answer. As it may for the most part reluctantly accepting parts of the bible as credible evidence and history…

By the way, I have no specialized training in biblical interpretation, and my opinions should be taken with a grain of salt except inasmuch as they are hopefully in line with church teaching.
I guess it is pretty tough to be sure.

As to hell, though, for whatever reason, the description has been watered down since I was a boy. Why has it been watered down? I think it is because it is unacceptably cruel to threated children with hellfire.

I guess since I still don’t see the church as necessarily good, I don’t think it is such a good thing to have them earn so much money.

My mistake.

Only those children, that are so stubborn and won’t obey the ten commandments, like the israelites were.

In whose eyes has it been watered down?

A, I don’t think anyone was asking you to avoid looking at the harsh parts. I certainly wasn’t. What I was asking is: Why are the other parts not given the same weight?

So A, what is the principle or goal or ideal or movement for atheism?
None that I know of. I do think we atheists have a strength which is lacking in the faithful though.
We daily face the reality that after this short life is over, there is nothing else.
We face that our death is a real death, and that we will not escape it by wish-thinking.
