The evidence available is coincidentally the same evidence one would have if the whole thing was fiction.Aren’t there many people, both fiction and non-fiction who this is true for?The same evidence would be available if the story were all fiction.Don’t know. I don’t even know if there was such persecution. Again, this would not (if it were true) indicate anything supernatural (as far as I can tell)
Now we went through the facts (evidence) that Jesus did exists and the Apostles also. In your own post you do not refute that Jesus Christ existed. There is firm evidence of this through many sources as I have shown.

So lets not go back to refute the existence of Jesus and His Apostles. I have not touched upon anything supernatural yet.

What about that geneology? Did they really try to explain Jesus’ ancestry? Do you actually believe that he was born of a certain ‘line’ (David, or Abraham?)?
You never agreed or disagreed first that the bible is a series of books that needs deciphering by a theist well versed and read. The bible needs to be interpeted so as to teach these scriptures It is easy to mis-interpet.

As I stated respectively in an earlier post the bible is not an easy read.

That even today theists and atheist are still deciphering the bible.

Just as the first part of Mathew I gave earlier as a teaser I am sure you see the point now Matthew was making but that read by someone not totally educated in all the books of the bible would realize as they would not know who 4 of the 5 women mentioned in the geneology. That even a Theist would have to contemplate as to why Matthew wrote this geneolgy which was missing much of the geneology would do this.( what was Matthew trying to say)

RIight, wrong, or indifferent
Jesus spoke and taught many in parables and much was never tottally explained to the crowds He taught including the Apostles.

Judicial evidence laws are to support or refute regular claims made by people regarding legal matters.

I am sure you will agree that your claims of an all-powerful god are far from regular. You will need much more amazing evidence to support such amazing claims.
Judicial evidence can send someone to death row. Do you agree?

To be precise, he didn’t say that atheists don’t interest him, he said their sneers don’t interest him.
I suppose I would have structured the sentence differently…
By the way, I assure you that sneerful is a word, as is asneerful. 🙂
Whenever in doubt I depend on my friend, the dictionary;) By the way I’m not so sure that asneerful is a word. Are you suggesting that you can place the prefix a- in front of any word?

This is turning into a grammar lesson. lol

@Hastrman

Hi again, happy Friday!
“Okay. But none of your examples is an ism, is it?”
The same trend holds true for 'ism’s as well. You seem to be fine with a-pathy, and a-symmetry simply being a lack of emotion and a lack of symmetry, why the double-standard with 'ism’s?

How about feminism? Afeminism (though not a word I have personally heard) wouldn’t be synonymous with masculism, it would just be a lack of the feminist philosophy.

The ‘a’ prefix isn’t the same as the ‘anti’ prefix, which you seem to have equated it to. Even the way you have portrayed it as having “no-god” is consistent with the definition I have put forth. Having “no-god” is not the same as the position “there is no god”.

If you choose to mean ‘people who assert an active disbelief in gods’ when you discuss atheism, go ahead, but as long as you fail to understand that modern, “self-identified athiests” usually mean ‘having no active assertion of a god-belief’, then you’re going to run into trouble, misunderstanding, and needless complications. I am clear in my atheism, as broadcast in every post by my signature, and my definition is philisophically and etymologically justified. You are far from alone in your assertion that “many self-described atheists … are] using the word wrong” but that does not make it so.
“On the other hand, a non-Theist is a person who is, pure and simple, not a Theist, not in the system of God-ism. No ambiguity–no tying yourself up with jerks like Richard Dawkins. Nobody has much dislike for non-Theists, other than a vague dislike that always goes with staying neutral, but what you call “strong” Atheists…almost nobody doesn’t dislike them.”
I could not care less what anybody thinks of other atheists. I am an individual, I am responsible for myself. Creationist morons are largely responsible for the outspoken reaction of Richard Dawkins as far as I can see. They really stepped on his toes as an evolutionary biologist when they tried to spread their irrationality.

As far as I am concerned, he has certainly stepped outside his speciality on matters of physics and philosophy, etc. However, he is a highly qualified, articulate, brilliant, renowned evolutionary biologist. I read him when I want to hear about evolution and biology, not when I want to hear about physics and philosophy. That said, his experience of meticulous proven methodology is obviously immense, so he is likely to do a better job on these other areas than I could, but that won’t stop me from reading widely and pushing the boundaries of my own knowledge from many different sources.

I care about the truth, I don’t care if the truth is ‘disliked’. If the truth is equivalent to ‘strong atheism’ then so be it as far as I am concerned. If the truth is theism, then also so be it as far as I am concerned. No matter what is the truth, I will only arrive at that conclusion through rational means, and I don’t care who dislikes the position.
“You hadn’t heard Richard Dawkins is sort of atheism’s equivalent of the Scarboro Baptist Church? They’re ashamed to be associated with him, because he’s, well, a jerk.”
Did you mean the Westboro Baptist Church? The Phelps family etc? Regardless, between atheists there is such a tenuous link, all they must have in common is that lack of belief in a god. Atheists can span an intensely wide range of philosophies outside of that. There is nothing for atheists to be ashamed of for a couple of reasons. All they have to admit to having in common with Richard Dawkins is a lack of belief in God for one. And secondly, by ‘jerk’ I am guessing (yes guessing) you simply mean ‘disagrees with me’ which all atheists do anyway!
"He says things like, “teaching children a religion ought to be classed as child abuse.”
Yet, in most interviews or book reading Q&As that I have seen (of course I have not seen them all) he adds the disclaimer that he has no intention of putting this ‘abuse’ on the same level of physical, sexual or emotional abuse currently associated with the word.

Do you think it would be abusive to bring up a baby as a homosexual, or as a communist, or as a cargo cultist before they are old enough to decide things for themselves? If you do then, this is the level of of abuse that Dawkins means. If you don’t… then well I don’t know what to say to you, except that you sound more intelligent than that.
“One of the other major atheism boosters, I forget which, has said that Dawkins gave atheists a bad name when he decided they should call themselves “Brights”–he made them look like egomaniacs.”
I don’t think this was his idea. I’d have to do some digging, but I think he merely supported the idea, much like how homosexuals hijacked the word ‘gay’ way back in the day. (I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it)
“This is why I think you need to call yourself a non-theist: so people won’t lump you in with the wholly unjustified sneering of A and Richard Dawkins, especially since the latter doesn’t seem able to hold his fascistical impulses in check. “Atheist” means “jerk” to most non-atheists, or in other words at least 80% of mankind.”
As I said, I think these terms are pretty much synonymous. Non-symmetrical, asymmetrical. As long as I’m clear and able to justify what I mean by atheist or atheism I will stick with it. It is well understood within atheism, and easiliy justifiable to those who are theists. I’d suggest you take the same approach, lest you give up the terms theist, or christian because many people consider these terms to mean “hijacking, terrorist, violent, abortion-clinic-bombing, cartoonophobes” etc.

Dare I ask your opinion regarding the advancements vs the regression in metaphysics?..

“We have the bodies of the Apostles but no Bodies of Jesus or that of His Mother, Mary.”
Which Apostles bodies do we have? This is interesting!

By the way, it is Friday, and your favourite phooney has partaken of some Jack Daniels. 😃

For fun, who wants to lecture me about “A”-lcoholic. Is it the belief that there is no lcoholic? 🙂

No I do not think we have the bodies or catacombs of fictional characters.

The story is not the same as you have the colluseum in Rome and you do not for instance have the Island of Atlantis.

I do not say that the torture and murders of Christians throughout late Rome was supernatural. I am only suggesting a question as to what was the scare or political controversy that would cause such a hate. or desire to crush the peaceful Christianity sect by the Romans or the Jews.
A question for you to contemplate.

As for my assumption it was a matter of survival as many of their followers were turning Christian and could not control or intimidate the majority of Christians. They just kept on coming and was growing thru the land like weeds Remember Christianity started with12 people. Was a religion that accepted all walks of life unlike the Roman Pagan Religions and the Jews,
The idea that such a Religion taking hold under such horrific persecution was an unexplained phenomeon itself.

St. Peter’s Basilica

miraclerosarymission.org/stpetertour.html

The largest and perhaps most impressive basilica in the world rises over the pagan cemetery that extended from the Via Cornelia, the road that connected the Tiber to the Via Aurelia, and flanked Nero’s Circus. It was exactly here, that around 67 A.D., during the first persecution of Christians launched by Nero that the Apostle Peter was crucified during a spectacle that included battles between slaves, gladiators and wild beasts. The Christians immediately took Peter’s body and buried it in the cemetery near the Circus. The remains of that cemetery can still be seen today beneath the basilica. Excavations between 1939 and 1950 unearthed both the tomb and the relics of the apostle.

The Catholic Church revers it’s Saints and has the bodies of many of the Apostles and the Saints. Many of these Saints are placed for viewing and many not decomposing is a phenoneom that is unexplianed by science.

Wonderful! Can you please also point me to some sources regarding the tests that were performed on the remains of St Peter, and the unbroken record of the remains from 67ce until now? Also, which of the ‘many’ apostles remains are there? Not just the incorruptables, of which there are a few examples in other religions, but the actual apostles, and again what tests and unbroken records are there?

@Armor of God

I am an Agnostic Atheist, no joke, and no apology needed 🙂 I happily concede that common usage is veering away from the origins of the words.
Yes, there seems to be a bit of semantics going on around here.
It was a two-pronged point. The first prong was to see if your current level of interactive communication with God was enough evidence for you to do something that is against your (otherwise) better judgement.
All of the times in my life that I have done something against my better judgement (which are many) were when I was stubbornly going against God, even though I knew what I was doing was hurtful, and I was ignoring my conscience.

I make no claims to having a direct-line connection to God, in which I always know exactly what He is asking of me. I have found that God doesn’t work that way - He speaks quietly and I have to pay attention.
As it is a relationship between Creator and created, it is not like a spousal relationship, but more like a loving parent-child relationship. So, no, I don’t always understand why He is asking me to do something.

To answer your initial question: Yes, I would kill if I truly believed God was asking me to. The reasons are:
  1. I trust in His mercy completely.
  2. I love Him.
  3. I have experienced His perfect Mercy, therefore I believe that He is also perfectly Just.
What this means is: If the person was possessed by the Devil, they would be innocent and would not perish OR If this being were the Devil or one of his demon servants, they would have already refused God’s love and eternally separated themselves from Him.

In either case, they would be doing the work of the Devil.

I will also add that in my Catholic upbringing, I have never been taught how to kill someone, and I am not aware of any Church-issued protocols on how to go about killing. I have never heard a priest preach on how and when to do it, and I never learned about it in Catechism lessons.
The second prong was to highlight the point that it makes me feel uneasy that many theists claim to get their ultimate benchmark of right and wrong and overall purpose in life from what is (potentially) a brutal dictator at worst, an uncomprehensible, unknowable entity at middle and a ficticious being at best.
Likewise, my friend, it boggles my mind that a person can draw their concepts of right and wrong from moral relativism (ie. “If it feels good, do it”, “What’s right for you might not be right for me”, etc.) or theories about chemicals in the body, or “trial and error” in societies over time. Especially when supposedly “advanced” societies dispense with life so easily through abortion, eugenics, and killing of the elderly or handicapped.

Also, you might feel less uneasy if you were made aware that the average Christian believer doesn’t hold to any of the three caricatures you have painted of God.
I give these three options because as far as a “brutal dictator” is concerned, I disagree with the overall actions depicted in the bible and I don’t think there has yet been a satisfactory answer to the problem of evil. As far as an “uncomprehensible, unknowable entity” is concerned, a God of Deism is irrelevant to us. And I am currently unable to discern a difference between a God and a ficticious character. I don’t mean for these three options to spawn this thread going off on another tangent, just as explanation for the point I was making.
I haven’t had my question answered yet as to why the majority of the last half of the Bible is rejected/ignored as a character reference when determining just what God is all about, when the “God is a meanie” card is played. Why not stick around to find out “the rest of the story”?

To be fair, I never posed the question to you initially, but I would like to hear your explanation.

Now you’ve made me feel guilty!
Absolutely not the intention…Take it as a compliment, in that I had faith (sorry! the “f” word again) in you finding me a book to read.
I have added your suggestion to my wishlist so I can keep an eye out for bargains on the amazon marketplace. 688 pages, nice!
Before you go spending your hard-earned moolah…I think you may have your eye on the wrong book (perhaps “The Life of Christ” by Giuseppe Riccotti?) Sheen’s book doesn’t have “The” in front of “Life”, and it is only about 475 pages. So, an easy read. (Just kidding! You do have to take your time with Fulton Sheen’s work.)

Who knows though, you might want to check out Riccotti’s book as well.
For you, I guess I will suggest “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” by Carl Sagan. I originally read it purely for enjoyment, but over the course of these three threads, it has been the work I have referenced most often. It has nothing to do with atheism at all, you understand, but it has been indispensable as a source of examples to give to people who think humans are somehow so far removed from animals.
Thank you for suggesting a book. You have restored my faith in you!

look under peter’s burial in google. I beleive Wikepedia has some of the best info. as it related to the relics of the Apostles. Now tests have been made and do describe the bones of an approximately 60 year old man along with bone of animals from the first century. There are tomb markings such as the red rock that the early Christians marked to pray at these sites

The various sites including Jewish sites and descibed the coffin and the words from Ancient language to that identifying Saint Peter at last to the markings on the coffin.

The burial site can be verified through the first Pope along with successive Popes through the centuries of the Catholic Church,

As with most ancient history there is some matters of contention that Peter was moved but most agree was returned to his resting place with Paul under St Peter’s Bassilica of the Catholic Church

The other passage usually cited by scholars to prove the martyrdom of Peter in Rome is, as I have mentioned, that of St. Ignatius of Antioch in his Epistle to the Romans. Curing the reign of the Emperor Trajan, and precisely, it would seem, in 107, Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch in Syria, had been condemned to a horrible death: to be exposed to wild animals in the arena, ad bestias, in the language of the time. Imprisoned in Antioch, St. Ignatius was sent with other Christians to Rome where his martyrdom was to take place. Sustained by a marvelous faith, he went through the stages of the long and painful journey by land and sea, yearning with tremulous joy for the suffering from which he would rise to the glory of heaven. During the trip there was a delay at Smyrna, and the heroic bishop took advantage of it to dictate several letters. Among others, he dictated one directly to the Christians of Rome, the city in which he knew he would soon lose his earthly life. In this Epistle, he exhorts the Romans not to make any attempt to rescue him; rather they should pray to Christ that his body might disappear completely - a total holocaust - in the jaws of the beasts. And just at this point,

Saintly Relics of Italy: Tombs of the Apostles and Evangelists
The Many Tombs of Religious Figures in Italy
Italy may be home to large number of the Apostles and Evangelists of Jesus. Some were martyred in Rome while others were brought to Italy centuries after their deaths. Several of these holy bodies found their way to Italy by less-than-holy means, usually by theft. There is also the fact that unscrupulous merchants, priests and crusaders helped fuel a trade in holy relics during the Middle Ages that left Europe with an enormous surplus of bones supposedly from the Apostles. Today the relics of the Apostles found in Italy may have more to do with tradition than fact; however the intercessory powers of these objects are just as powerful to the faithful.

Some can be proven through history and markings of the graves and coffins and some can not. Remember the persecution for 300 years made it rather diffucult to keep these relics in the open without hiding them as the Roman and Jewish authorities would destroy them if found.

It is explained even in some secular sites.

I figured you used the word (Not just the incorruptables)

Can I see some of these outside the Catholic Church and have they been tested as the Catholic Saints have by Scientists and the Catholic Saints that have not rotted once dead / placed in the ground for decades and exumed.

Atheism is not " a lack of a belief in God, nothing more." To discuss topics we are not free to make up our own definitions of words. An atheist is defined as " a person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings." Atheism is defined as “the doctrine or belief that there is no God.” Randon House Dictionary Second Edition Unabridged 1987.

There is a world of difference between a “lack of a belief” and a “disbelief.” A disbelief in God or a belief that there is no God is an affirmative deliberate act of the intellect; a disbelief is a judgment based on the consideration of some evidence. A mere lack of a belief is not Atheism. Dogs have “a lack of belief in God, nothing more” but they do not have a disbelief in God (or a supreme being) and they do not deny that there is a God.

An atheist does not claim that he does not know if God exists; he claims to know that God does not exist.

I have heard this argument for 25 years. Does it matter? NO.
I don’t believe in anything that me and two more people cannot take and investigate and come to the same conclusion.
Does your sky-god exist or not.
No, he doesn’t.

The relics of Peter (Simon bar Jonah-that-was) are felt to be in St. Peter’s in Rome. I don’t think that relics of any of the others are well-documented.
