Kindly prove this assertion. I’ll let the rest go as rambling opinions, but this one you need to prove.
I don’t know if MORE people have been slaughtered on account of religion than any other reason, but millions have been certainly been slaughtered. Probably mainly by Islam in the centuries when Islam overran Asia, slaughtering entire populations of Buddhists and Hindus. there have been terrible slaughters in modern times between Hindus and Muslims. The Christians have slaughtered many in their own day, probably the greatest numbers during the crusades where there was indiscriminate slaughter in the ‘holy’ land. Lots of one-by-one torture and burnings, too, in Europe and Spain, but the ‘numbers’ were not great, ‘just’ a few thousands, I suppose… the Jews slaughtered the populations living in what is now Israel, Canaanites and so forth. Saul was punished by the prophet Nathan because he refused to slaughter a tribe of non-Jews, for example.

Religion is a great excuse to kill someone.

Hitler was a human Being with free will and was tempted by the devil because God let it happen. This does not mean that God made him do it or that Hitler was forced to do what he did. Hitler still had a choice to change or to feed in to hate. God will protect you and will also leave you to test your faith.
Well, Hitler didn’t act alone. There were many many ordinary citizens in Germany, Eastern Europe and Russia who helped Hitler’s henchmen, the SS, to kill Jews and others by the millions. Most of these ordinary citizens were good CATHOLICS and members of ORTHODOX churches. They lived at home, went to work, slaughtered Jews, and otherwise led ordinary lives; they went to church. I don’t know if they bothered to confess. I don’t know if their priests thought that they had committed sins.

Try Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot for starters.
In the 20th century, most powerful despots weren’t religious, so religion was let off the hook. But in the days, when rulers were religious,…look out! Lots of slaughters.

But a lot of religious people sure helped Hitler. They were members of Christian churches, usually RC and EO, murdered for the Reich, and saw nothing wrong. After all, the people whom they killed had killed Christ,…hadn’t they?

I became a thief, alcoholic, addict and was in jail 2 years before I was 22. Not to mention the boys home for three years.

I was also homosexual.

After trying everything I could on my own limited human power and reason to be happy and free, i said a prayer to jesus christ and all of those desires were removed from me and I went from being an evil person, harming everyone around me, to a productive person with an entirely different outlook on life and different belief system.

this all occurred in about 15 seconds of time after saying the prayer.

the problem with people like you, is that reason has not failed you entirely yet and your self inflicted pain is not great enough to look to God. When that occurs, you will come to know the one thing that can solve your problem and give you what you have been seeking all along. Some day you will say, wow, i wish I would have done that sooner.

but the fact is, you cannot, not until you are ready. that may be the day you are dying, but whenever, He is faithful to give you what you need, even if that means being without His grace after this life, which is a horrible place. Even as an agnostic, you are still in the midst of the grace of God, else you would not know love or have any things deemed “good” in your life.
…I’m happy for you, Justin–you seem in a far better place now.

…but I have been very fortunate. I haven’t been in jail, a thief, an alcoholic, in jail, or (horrors!) a homosexual.

I don’t share your experiences. I, who don’t pray and don’t believe in a god, am in (reasonably) good health, and am happily married with wonderful children. I love my work, am good at it and make a lot of money, giving away much of it to charities and poor relatives. I try to practice the Golden Rule.

Your witness is not my witness. I am glad what worked for you–worked. And I hope that it continues working. Often it doesn’t. And it sure doesn’t work for many other people on this forum, and the postings by miserable, guilty people attest to this. Catholicism appears to create a lot of very unhappy people.

It seems you haven’t realized we are Catholic and are in a Catholic forum. And by the way I’m sure we’ve all considered the possibility but we chose to believe. I’m sorry you don’t see things the same way.
It’s fair to argue that this is a Catholic forum and the arguers against atheism would be Catholic.

But it’s an atheist thread. If the moderators wanted to discontinue it, they would. Forums thrive on controversy. You’ll notice that this forum is not heavily moderated at all, unlike other Catholic forums with a much smaller audience.

(excerpt)
The fact is that condemning a person to an eternity of torture (“furnace of fire” and “wailing and gnashing of teeth”) is beastly and hateful beyond anything any human could possibly do.
I sure couldn’t! Why would a god condemn one of his own creatures, no matter how terrible, to this end?

Welcome to the thread, Jofantioch! Glad to have your slightly different take on things.
…but there is a lot of anger on this sub-forum so watch out!

…I agree with the parts about atheists in your thread but not your conclusions.

Whats your point? cant others commit sin? What about priests that are pedophiles? you actually think we believe thats right? No of course we don’t but people fall to temptation.

This guy is obviously has a personal hate against god not just any god but the Christian God. He will take any piece of our sentences and twist it or take a sentence from a paragraph, that will prove the opposite with ought the rest and post it for the sake of arguing. Just watch him do it.
Doesn’t reason suck when your position is unreasonable?
God is greater than anything you could possibly understand.
This suggests that you also could not possibly understand - or any person, right? Now, go on with explaining how you understand your god…
God is the creator of Hitler, like of everything else. What Hitler did is not something new as a matter of fact its happening right now to Muslims in Africa. Bush administration was behind some conspiracies as well that I could go into another time.
Bush is killing for his god, too. I don’t suggest that this ‘god’ can do anything about it (remember, I don’t believe). That doesn’t change the fact that both Bush, and the 9/11 attackers were doing what they did in the name of a god.
Hitler was a human Being with free will and was tempted by the devil because God let it happen. This does not mean that God made him do it or that Hitler was forced to do what he did. Hitler still had a choice to change or to feed in to hate. God will protect you and will also leave you to test your faith.
Face it, this looks strikingly like it would if there were no gods.
Truth be told, I am technologically challenged when it comes to attaching images in the forum, and I didn’t have time to learn on a mini-tutorial.

So, I have now learned the basics, and here is the photo as per your request.

Thanks for the effort. Your god is a golden trinket? I thought you worshipped the artist formerly known as Yahweh.

This looks like another icon to me (most religions have many such trinkets)

I only looked up Hitler. I suspected that he was doing what he did for a god. I haven’t looked up the others yet.
So far, killing in the name of a god is ahead. Even if Stalin, Mao **and **Pol Pot killed for other reasons, it will be tough to catch up with Hitler and the crusades.
Were you going to try to pass Hitler off as someone who was killing, but NOT for a god ? lol
I said that more people had been killed in the name of a god than for any other reason. Give me another reason people have killed and we can compare.
You are seriously mistaken about Hitler. He did nothing for or in the name of God. The statement you quoted is nothing more than a calculated ploy on his part in his rise to power. Get real!

Keep counting because I guarantee you that any thoughtful and serious research on your part will totally dismantle your erroneous thoughts on the body counts mounted by the atheist and materialist monsters that I named versus those killed because of religion.

More uninformed and needless sarcasm.

You are misunderstanding. Even atheists could kill in the name of god. Hitler was not devout (though he was a Catholic - never excommunicated. I guess he wasn’t as evil as Galileo)but he used religious nonsense to push his agendas when he chose. Because of some ridiculous automatic respect many have for a man who injects holy words into his language.
Remove this nonsense and people have to find other reasons to kill, other subjects to fire up soldiers.

They didn’t all kill for atheism, though. They killed for a variety of reasons. It just seems like when someone wants to do some large-scale murder, they almost always invoke the name of a god.
Those who don’t are the exceptions.
More uninformed and needless sarcasm.
It looks like a golden trinket, and an icon. Calling it sarcasm is a dismissal, it doesn’t change what I saw.

Your problem is one of bias and perspective. The punishment we receive is of our own making.

Try some of life’s more obvious lessons. When people continuously make selfish decisions they usually lead very unhappy lives. People that engage in self-destructive behavior usually lead very unhappy lives. People that lead hateful lives usually lead very unhappy lives. I could go on and on but you get the idea. These people make their own hell on earth and they cannot blame God for their unhappiness. Likewise, those that die in an unrepentant state of hatred will reap what they sow. Their hell is self made. Their self made hell on earth is horrible and miserable, and their self made hell in eternity is horrible and miserable.

Atheists like to think that their lives are of their own making, and that they are in control of their own destiny. It seems to me that an atheist should, therefore, be able to appreciate the fact that if God exists then we shouldn’t blame Him for the consequences of our unrepented sins. Atheists should at the very least “man up” on this one. Atheists should believe that, if God does exist, then people need to take responsibility and ownershlp for the consequences of their actions. Why blame God?

The facts are simple and clear. Religion is not the greatest source of murder and death or division as you claim. The atheistic monsters I named clearly lead the pack when it comes to killing.

My reference to your sarcasm was not a dismissal. Think about what you were supposed to be looking at. Learn something about what it was you were looking at. Then make an informed comment. The monstrance is a receptacle for displaying the Eucharist. The Eucharist is not a trinket and the monstrance is not an icon or a trinket.

The monstrance is a trinket. Your god is not a crumb of bread. Just because you imagine that to be the flesh and blood of a long absent god does not make it so. No matter how hard you imagine it.
The transubstantiation is just what it looks like - nothing more than muttered words.
If you have a picture of another monstrous trinket you can post it and have two gods.
Your god is still invisible.

You are absolutely right.

Curiosity abounds…How did you become an expert on what God looks like when you claim that you have never seen Him and that you don’t believe in Him?
