I don’t mean to be rude because I understand what you’re saying but if you are calling yourself atheist now you can’t be a Muslim too since Muslims believe the absolute Oneness of God if you don’t believe God exists you can’t be a Muslim. Now, with regards to what kind of Christian, Catholic or Orthodox. Well you got your historicity down. Were I in your situation I would read both arguments. Most of what I found from the Orthodox is not entirely accurate about papal authority. A lot of times, it’s outright ignored by some Orthodox theologians, not all Orthodox thelogians. I would also like to say that you’re asking about what kind of Christian you should be that you’re not an atheist, you’re an agnostic.

I guess my answer would be a question, why are you looking at Christianity? What is driving you? I’m a convert and what drove me was a deeper understanding and love for God.

This is probably a really bad place to ask that question, in fact I don’t know if there is a good place to ask that question, because religion, much like politics, is going to be spread with a bias. So if I were to answer your question I would say you need to join the Roman Catholic Church, I’m saying that because I know it to be true and right, but someone else is going to think they are right (even though I know they are wrong!). However I had to go through a large portion of my life to figure that out. So you may bounce around to several beliefs, as it appears you are doing, before you come to the right one.

I guess what I am saying is sometimes it’s the journey that really makes the difference, not just the destination. Keep searching, figure out why you are interested in Christianity, and make an educated decision, don’t just settle for something because it sounds good, feels good or looks good. Research, research, research, and then when it’s all said and done look around to your left and to your right, and make sure you are in a Catholic Church! That’s the right one, btw!!!😂😂😂

Welcome to CAF!

Per your question - the freedoms you have mean you choose your path, but this is a good site to learn about Catholicism.

Might want to try Vatican.va

Online resources also - usccb.org for an online bible and online Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Catechism houses in detail what the Church teaches.

Search for Nicene Creed, or Apostle’s Creed for a brief read of significant events that are core to the Christian belief.

Again Welcome! and ask away!

The Nicene Creed :

I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Wonderful introduction! Probably best to ask specific questions in their respective forums. For example you might want to post questions about Catholicism in Apologetics.

I will remember you in my prayers.

Hi and welcome!!! 🙂

Both churches can make the historical claim to be established by Jesus Christ. But only one of them has scriptural backing as to being prime apostle who was to lead the Lord’s Church after he ascended. And that is the Catholic Church. :
Matthew 16:16-19English Standard Version (ESV)
16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock[a] I will build my church, and the gates of hell** shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[c] in heaven.”**
Luke 22:31-32Amplified Bible (AMP)
31 “Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! Satan has demanded permission to sift [all of] you like grain; 32 but I have prayed [especially] for you [Peter], that your faith [and confidence in Me] may not fail; and you, once you have turned back again [to Me], strengthen and support your brothers [in the faith].”
And:
John 21:15-18New American Bible (Revised Edition) (NABRE)
15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter,[a] “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”** He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He then said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” [Jesus] said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18 [c]Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.**
Other verses that support the primacy of Peter as well.

The Orthodox will tell you that Peter was first among equals. But FIRST is still first is it not?

Blessings on your journey

Hi. You’re in a challenging position, especally if you still live in a Moslem country. At least in Christian countries, you have the freedom to make up your own mind. God’s given us a brain, and expects us to use it.

For a bit of personal background, I was atheist at one stage, became Christian at age 28, was Protestant for about 14 or 15 years, then became Catholic. From my point of view, the Catholic Church is “Closest” to the truth.

As you’re probably aware, there are 3 main Christian camps - Catholic and Orthodox, and Protestant. The Catholic and Orthodox can trace their history back much earlier than the Protestants, who didn’t even start until 1500 years after Christ, and were a breakaway group from the Catholic Church.

So you’re correct in seeking clarification as to which of the two earliest churches to consider - Catholic or Orthodox.

The basic reason for the differences goes back in history. Emperor Constantine was the first Roman emperor to formally admit Christianity as the official religion of the state in 313AD. At that time, he was seated in Rome, and the bishop of Rome was recognised by many as the inheritor of the Petrine declaration as “head” of the church.

However the same Emperor also set up Constantinople (now Istanbul) as a bulwark against barbarian invasions from the East. In time, as Constantinople became easier to defend and grew in strength, Rome became a backwater, and the Roman Empire, now officially Christian, shifted its focus from Rome to Constantinople, and became known as “The Holy Roman Empire”.

And in Constantinople, the Emperor declared himself the head of the church.

So you had two conflicting claims to supremacy, the spiritual claim of the Pope in the West, and the secular claim of the Emperor in the East.

This set the scene for centuries of confrontation, and even though the Holy Roman Empire has long ceased to exist, the differences still remain. Meanwhile Rome had a resurgence, but the reality is that the Church is not tied to a location. The real head of the church is Jesus Christ, who then gave authority to Peter, stating “… on you I will found my church”.

The Catholic claim is that the Pope, the bishop of Rome, is the successor of Peter, and can trace his line all the way back to the original declaration.

Having said that, even if the Pope were forced from Rome, his authority would still hold, as it is a spiritual authority, not secular.

So, you have to make up your mind as to which church can rightfully claim the See of Petrine authority, as instituted by Christ.

We’re a Catholic forum, and therefore biased. As I said before, I think the Catholic Church is “closest” to the truth.

All the best with your search. Bear in mind however that

John 6:44 NIV
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.
If you’re being drawn to Christ, then it is God the Father who is calling you. There is no other possible method.

Since that is the case, ask Him in prayer to help you decide which Church you should join, and to make it very clear for you. You’ve come from a Moslem background, not Christian, so you’d need some assistance to get around the theological and traditional differences.

After all, God is the author of history and the Church, and He would know precisely which Church He wants you to join. Don’t get too tied up in human arguments - in our sinfulness, we have divided the Church into three major conflicting sects.

I’d go back a stage and first decide if you accept the basic ethos of the Christian faith. The Nicene Creed has been set out for you above and that is essentially what you need to assent to.

But let’s start with the bare bones
  • The Trinity. God is one and God is three: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All are equal in nature but in authority that Father is above the Son is above the Spirit.
  • Jesus is fully God and fully man.
  • Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. He was crucified for our sins, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.
  • The crucifixion was a sacrifice for all of us and has the power to take away our sins, but you have to accept Jesus offer to take away your sins.
  • There is a real heaven and a real hell and the consequences you make in this life will impact on where you go. This applies not only in terms of behaviour but also in terms of belief. It is essential that you are baptised in order to be saved.
There is a lot more to Christianity that this of course, but if you believe these points and you get baptised then you are a Christian. I would not get hung up on what branch of Christianity you want to join at this stage, start with the basics. Read the Gospels, then start on the rest of the Bible. Exodus is especially important for understanding how we are saved, since it is essentially a prefiguration of the last supper and the cruxifixction. Lastly, learn and start saying some simple prayers. Learning the Our Father would be a good start.

The papacy was a big obstacle for me too speaking as a convert, and to be frank it is still something that causes me a lot of doubt. As far as I know, the Orthodox believe the Pope is one of five great leaders in the church, but is not infallible, that he can make mistakes. Other Christian groups may have a similar view.

Jem1998,

atheists believe that ONLY the physical universe exists.

is that what you truly believe or would your position be put more accurately that you no longer believe that islam adequately teaches the true nature of God our Creator?

although i support anyone wanting to know more about christianity, i wonder what made you able to eliminate religions like hinduism, sikhism, bahaism, buddhism and many others?

any assistance that you can gain from Catholic Answers (here) would be greatly enhanced if you could provide readers here with more insight as to what your spiritual life currently understands and revolves around.

to give you some insight in to my own faith, my faith is Roman Catholic. i embrace it with as much ardor as i can. why? because i have spent my life studying and learning about the world and the teachings found in it. to date, i have discovered nothing that so completely addresses all of my questions and concerns about this world and my life as does the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

to find the essentials of the Roman Catholic faith is not that difficult, they are contained completely in what is called the Apostles Creed. however, while the essentials are completely contained in the Apostles Creed, the understanding of these essentials and the fullness of their meaning requires a commitment of a lifetime. i have found there is no end to learning the fullness of their meaning and how they fit so completely together.

that learning is what the rest of the tools provided by the Roman Catholic faith, Sacred Scripture, the seven sacraments, the books, the sermons, the prayers and the practices, are designed to provide. it would benefit you greatly if you were to be able to form a personal and spiritual relationship with a spiritual adviser, preferably a Roman Catholic priest.

i hope the above is of some help to you Jem

I came to this same crossroad, deciding between Catholic and Orthodox. I chose Catholic for a few reasons:
  1. I think it is important to be in full communion with the Apostle Peter.
  2. The Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception.
  3. The Catholic Church’s teaching on marriage, specifically, remarriage after divorce.

Pope do mistakes?
The Catholic teaching is that Popes do indeed make mistakes. The infallibility of the Pope is the teaching that he will not be in error when teaching officially on faith and morals from the chair of Peter. It does not mean he is divine, or perfect, or that anything he says is perfect/free from flaws.
Orthodoxs say ne that catholics believe Madona is a female godness. Is is trye or false?
The Catholic teaching is that Mary is human, not a goddess.

👍

Yes, this is the Christian understanding. The pope is a man who can make mistakes and Mary is human like all of us.

We Catholics believes that God gave a guarantee to his church that he will be with us until the end of time.
"Go, therefore,* and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Mt 28:19-20
In that sense the faith was entrusted to the Church as a whole and we believe that God will ensure that the faith will be preserved from error.

Where Catholics & Orthodox differ from Muslims is that we believe there is a single religious leadership for the Church to decide issues of doctrines. Where Catholics and Orthodox differs is who the leadership is. Where we agree is that this leadership will take the role seriously and will be careful to speak for the whole umat only on certain issues (where it touches on the faith that is handed down from the Apostles) and only after a proper due process (e.g…, consultations, a synod, etc)

Catholics believe that this leadership is under the Pope while Orthodox believe that this leadership is under the Synod of Bishops. The truth is that the reality of actual practice is somewhere in between.

If you want to choose between Catholics and Orthodox, I would think there are two key differences:

(1) Catholics tend to prefer to define the faith in very clear terms whereas Orthodox prefer that the Holy Spirit guide you in understanding the faith. Of course, both Catholics and Orthodox are a mix of both thinkings. But in Catholicism it is easier to download a clear definition of what Catholics believe in most areas but for Orthodox, you would need to hunt around.

(2) Orthodox worship is much older that Catholic worship which has been updated, the latest ‘overhaul’ in 1970. So if you like old style worship, join Orthodox.

I hope this helps.

Pope is human.Orthodix says that pope is on of the big 5 big christian clerics but he is human.I think only God dont do mistakes.Orthodoxs say ne that catholics believe Madona is a female godness. Is is trye or false?
The pope is human, yes. And the pope can make mistakes in their own life. However, when they teach about doctrine or dogma they have papal infallibility because on those matters they are guided by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity and is equivalent to God. So when they speak from papal infallibility, they are speaking with guidance from God and that is why they cannot make a mistake when speaking from papal infallibility. (This a bad analogy, but it’s like God is speaking through the pope.) On other topics or when they are not speaking with papal infallibility they can be wrong, so not everything the pope says is necessarily right, but papal infallibility which is in regards to teaching, is always right.

For the next part, Madona = Mary. (Madonna is a valid name for Mary, but I’m used to Mary which is why I’ll be using that name.)

Mary is not a goddess. (God is the only god.) Mary is a saint. Saints are people that have died and are now in Heaven. In life Mary gave birth to Jesus. If you read the Bible, Mary was taken (both body and soul) into Heaven. Catholic Tradition honors her as the Queen of Heaven and as the greatest of saints because she never sinned. (That plus she is the mother of Jesus.)
Catholics believe those in Heaven can help those on earth by interceding (helping) or by praying. (Because the saints are in Heaven with God, they know how to pray better.) So because we believe saints can help us and Mary is the greatest of the saints, we honor her.

Question: What is your native language? Which language do you speak most easily?
