outfctrl:Since I have been back to the Church (six weeks), I feel guilty all the time. I sin almost constantly, not just sin, but Mortal sins. It is freaking me out.
I slip and say the Lords name in vain…MORTAL SIN
I masturbate…MORTAL SIN
I look at a woman’s attributes and…think…another MORTAL SIN.
I turn down sex…but think how nice it would be to…Another MORTAL SIN.
I am really trying, but it seems like I live in sin.
How does a single guy do this? It seems I need to go to confession daily. What am I going to do?
I look at our priests when I go to Mass, and have the highest respect for them. Committing their lives to Jesus and the Church. The temptations of this world are almost unbearable, at least for me they are.
Sure could use some advice on my spirituality, its killing me. I want so bad to be a good Catholic, but it seems almost impossible. I pray and pray and pray to our Mother Mary, Jesus, the Saints, but still screw up.
It sounds as if St. Paul had the same problem you do:
Romans 7:13-25 ESV
*Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.*
You also need to remember what St. John Said:
1 John 2:1, 2 ESV
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
And, you should know that most of what you’re describing as “Mortal Sins” probably aren’t:
So what kind of Sins are Mortal?
In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three conditions:
Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner
This means that mortal sins cannot be done “accidentally.” A person who commits a mortal sin is one who knows that their sin is wrong, but still deliberately commits the sin anyway. This means that mortal sins are “premeditated” by the sinner and thus are truly a rejection of God’s law and love.

Remember, the Father of Lies wants you to believe that your sins are such that God could never forgive them. Nothing could ever be further from the truth. God’s grace and Mercy are greater than the sum of all of our sins. If Jesus could forgive the woman caught in Adultery (John 8:2-11), those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34) and the Robber dying next to Him on the cross (Luke 23:42-43), He can forgive you of all of your sins.
Please remember that, and try something such as Daily Mass, daily prayers from a Breviary, and the Rosary, as well as regular meetings with a Spiritual Director.
I hope that helps and provides some comfort.
Your Brother in Christ, Michael
