I am offended by something I read

I recieved a newsletter from the Episcopal church I used to attend, and as I was reading through it, here is what it said

“Unlike our Roman
Catholic brothers and sisters, who depend on
papal authority for defining belief, we have always
maintained that, ‘We pray what we believe.’”

I thought about emailing them and voicing my concern

what do you all think???
 
I think you should voice your opinion and tell them that you disagree with what they call a “fact”. However, I’m sure they’ll probably say something in return to back their statement up. You can’t go wrong with saying something, though.

It’s a free country. If your upset by it, the question you should ask yourself is;

’ Why wouldn’t I send a letter?’

If you don’t have a good reason not to, do. imo.

So discussion is useless? They’ll stay in their fortress and you’ll stay in your fortress and somehow, that’s supposed to please your God?

Why not air your grievances and see where your common ground is?

Your God created one Church. Now there’s something like 38,000 denominations. How will this fracture ever be reconciled if people don’t share their beliefs and concerns?
 
Yet another example of the mindset that prevents Anglicans from being good chess players: They can’t distinguish bishops from queens.

JL: I would say, What you have been praying is the problem, the whole world can see what the Episcopal church has been praying. Remember the old saying watch out what you pray for you might get it. When you start praying the gospel like Roman Catholics write again.
 
Perhaps they meant something along the line of“lex orandi, lex credendi” ie:“praying shapes believing.”

I would just send them a nice email-ex: “We Catholics Believe in God, and our Prayer to Him is an unceasing intimate conversation with Him; an acknowledgment that we are totally dependent on Him for everything-for which we are immensely grateful.We allow God to be our guide in all things.” JMHO
 
Try to make the letter educational, to correct a few of their misbeliefs about Catholicism, and challenge them to learn more. Provide some references.

Tough to do in a short letter, but if you ask the Holy Spirit for inspiration, you might be surprised what flows out of the end of your pen.

But they are still better than Catholics who arn’t suppost to play chess because of “its evil effects on the society” St Peter Damian, Doctor of the Church.

On a serious note; write and complain, you have free speech - use it!
 
They are protestants what did you expect them to say about Catholicism?

I would send them quotes, lots of them, from the Fathers of the Church citing the authority of the CC. and let them know that these are the Fathers of the Church and they have authority, episcopals dont have authority to teach anyone.

you can’t change people who have strong convictions on what they believe in. what we do is pray for conversion. let God present them in a path that would lead them back home to Him

trust me, when i started reading up on Church history, doctrines, teachings, etc., its because i wanted to “battle” these people who spread lies about the Catholic Church. and what happens? long internet debates that just go round and round and round. their hearts and minds are set on what they believe in, and convincing them that what they believe in for so long is wrong won’t change their minds. the same way that they are telling us Catholics that we’re wrong, and it doesn’t change our minds. no matter what our arguments are, they have counter agruments for it. we’re not the only side that has Apologists. if they can be easily be defeated with a few sound arguments, they would have been defeated a long time ago. we’re not the first ones to try and convince them to think otherwise.

they’re not going to change their opinion of the Catholic Church because all these other faiths, most of their doctrines are based on what the Catholic Church has done wrong (according to them). so to correct it means to correct the basis of their faith, which would take a lot. one has to open their mind and their heart first to accept a new message.

Looked at from another angle, it’s insulting to the Episcopalians. Whatever belief, true or false, wacky or sensible, that someone holds, is eligible to become official teaching. It’s “bottom up” theology. We have “top down” theology, where our Holy Father is charged with keeping faithful to what Jesus gave us in founding the Church. I’ll take that any day, without shame or apology.

I think that it is a very unclear statement. But what is it exactly that you think it is saying that you find offensive?

Unfortunately the statement in the letter you received makes it sound like Catholicism doesn’t try to have their liturgy reflect their beliefs, which is clearly untrue. I doubt they actually meant to say that however.

I suspect that what they are referring to is something that is really not that controversial. In Catholicism the Magisterium is the Mediator of Truth and defines and interprets Catholic teaching… There is no equivalent body in Anglicanism, and historically we have used our liturgy as the repository of belief, in a way similar to the Orthodox. (Although that is a harder position for many modern Anglicans to maintain.)

I don’t think it is really worth being offended over what is mostly poor writing, and perhaps a half-baked understanding of Anglicanism.

I have been deeply saddened today when I received the “The Lion”, even though I no longer attend St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. I am now a Catholic, and love my new faith. What has saddened me was the misinformation about Roman Catholics that was put into “The Lion” that is being passed on to your members. We depend on God for our defining belief. We Catholics Believe in God, and our Prayer to Him is an unceasing intimate conversation with Him; an acknowledgment that we are totally dependent on Him for everything-for which we are immensely grateful. We allow God to be our guide in all things. I think you all should get a wonderful book called “Catechism of the Catholic Church”, so if you need to pass on information concerning the Catholic Church, then you can do so correctly, and not misinform anyone. It just really hurts me that lies are spread by Christians.

If I read that letter, I’d ask you;

’ If you depend on God for your defining belief. Why then do you need a Pope?’
 
We Catholics do pray what we believe during Mass. And we pray in unity because we know what we believe. Our beliefs are consistent throughout all the ages, thanks to the structure of Christ’s Holy Church.

God has defined our belief through the Pope…am I wrong in thinking this way!!!🤷

Jesus handed down his teachings to the Apostles, and these teaching are passed on to their successors who are the Bishops, which would include the Pope
