Today I became involved in an abortion “debate” (actually it was more of a battle) on another forum. I was all by myself and I was attacked several times. One woman said she loathed me and that I was obviously an idiot. One said I must have chosen bad colleges because I didn’t understand that a first-trimester fetus doesn’t experience pain, when I had never even mentioned first-trimester fetuses. One said that babies become persons at birth because of magic. I felt like I was in a battle with the enemy all around me.

And I was. But the enemy wasn’t the people who were attacking me. The enemy is the evil one. These people who I have let hurt me aren’t the enemy at all - they, along with unborn babies, are the ones we are trying to save!! Surely they were created by a loving God and have precious souls. They need our prayers, our help, our love.

I talked to a friend today about my experience and she asked me if I had rejoiced yet. I asked her what the heck I should rejoice about and she said “the insults, of course.” How dumb can I be? Of course I should rejoice in the insults and I should always offer up personal pain to God. It is a treasure.

My friend PMd me the following quote. I like it a lot and would like to share it with you. I realize this is not the start of a long thread but I know there are lurkers (I’m one :)) and maybe this will help us who fight for the rights of the unborn when we feel tired, frustrated, and sad:

“If we follow all our Commander’s (God’s) battle instructions, we will also do something all the saints did, but something we don’t hear about any more today; we will rejoice when we are persecuted and vilified. Today’s instruments of persecution are usually made only of ink, not steel. If we can’t rejoice in these little verbal slaps, how will we rejoice in imprisonments or martyrdom? What a privilege to get so close to the Crucified that a bit of His blood splatters on us!”

Dear God,

Please help me rejoice when I am hurt, insulted, hated, loathed, called names, all because I speak Your Truth - that the unborn are human beings created in Your image. Tomorrow is the beginning of Lent. I’ve never paid much attention to Lent. This year will be different. I offer to You all the pain I have experienced and will experience during Lent (both physical and emotional) in the cause of stopping the murder of our unborn. Please give me wisdom, please strengthen my armor of righteousness, please sharpen my sword of truth, and please help me to remember who I am fighting.

Amen. So be it!!

Dear Friend,
you should absolutely give thanks for the insults. You were given the honor of being treated like Christ. I admire you for standing up for the truth.
It does have an effect, though we may not see it. A Planned Parenthood director recently walked out of her job during 40 days for life, and now is converting to Catholicism. This was clearly an act of the Holy Spirit, but possibly He used the prayers of those outside to accomplish His will.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.”

LittleSoldier:
I have been in many of these exchanges online, and the thing you would easily notice is that the other side is prone to make insults, ad-hominems, rude, hate speech. There is a pattern you can easily detect. Let us not be carried away, but defend the truth in reverence. I think there is something in St Peter’s letters about this posture I just forgot the exact place. After all, it is very easy to bring home the point simply because the truth is with you. It is the angry one who is always on the losing side.
God bless you.

I’m glad you mentioned Abby Johnson (the PP director). I know her a bit and asked for her help and she posted on the thread. She also told me something that had never occurred to me. She said that this is not a popularity contest - this is a fight to save the lives of human beings.

In a way I felt like I had been gently slapped across the face (very gently) but it was like when someone is slapped across the face and says “Thank you; I needed that!” (I can’t remember where that comes from). I thank Abby for her oh-so-gentle slap. I did need to know. My self-esteem is very low because I was bullied constantly when growing up and my Dad called me stupid many times each and every day (it was his favorite word and I don’t think he understood how hurtful it is to a child to be called stupid all day long). But I need to have the strength to put aside my ego problems and join in the battle with all my heart and soul.

I don’t care about rewards in heaven. Being with God for eternity is the greatest reward I can imagine. What I want is for people to stop murdering their unborn. I guess that would be a treasure. I guess I’m still a little confused. Oh well, that’s nothing new. 😃

what forum? I want in 😃
It’s on facebook. And believe it or not, it was something I received on my wall from the Sierra Club - an organization I have supported financially and by word-of-mouth for many years. A representative posted a few times and refused to answer my simple question: Do you support the right of a woman to obtain an abortion?

All I got in return was gibberish “Oh we don’t believe in making decisions for women…yada yada yada.” I said that at least Amnesty International had the guts to admit they are pro-abortion. But Sierra Club avoided the issue. Three times.

They have now lost my support, including my financial support. I will never send them another penny.

If the thread is still active (if you’re on facebook you know how quickly they die) I’ll get a link for you. Any help is appreciated. But it’s against forum rules for me to ask everyone to join in the fight. I don’t think providing a link is against forum rules.

I’m going to research Sierra Club a bit more. I’m very disappointed because I am an avid environmentalist. Sierra Club has accomplished some remarkable things. Why do they have to ruin it by implying (at the very least) that they are a group of moral relativists and refuse to answer a simple, direct question? Just the fact that they refuse to answer the question is an answer in itself. I’ve dealt with a few of these organizations before. When they refuse to answer a huge red flag goes up.
