doctrine of osas and instant salvation
 Never claimed it was a complete compendium of verses; simply listing what comes to mind in reference to the OP.😃 But if you were willing on another thread, I’d be quite keen to hear how you deal with those verses I did list.šŸ™‚

If they say ā€œGod saved meā€, I’ll think they want to share their personal story of how God has acted in their life. If they say ā€œI am savedā€, I’ll think something different. Most likely I’ll suspect they are only talking to me in order to convince me I’m going to hell, and that they are not interesting in friendship or genuine exchange.

good to hear this berean. we could start another thread if you like. i have no problem with this. but i would say i would deal with these verses, in light of all the verses written, and vice versa. we cant have one set without the other to get the whole picture. peace šŸ™‚

HI all

thank you so much…

keep this going…my comments coming soon šŸ‘

God bless you all

Must be nice to know.

Interestingly enough, some Protestants claim they are saved by faith alone and then claim there is a Hell and you will go there if you sin, as stated in the Bible.

Either:
  1. If you’re saved, then how can you go to Hell?
    -or-
  2. Everyone except a newborn who doesn’t know better commits a sin, so we are all going to Hell.
On this issue, I tend to lean toward the Catholic perspective in that you need to do good works and repent for your sins. If you truly accept Christ, you will do good works, so this will not be a problem.

hi stephe. are you part of an organized congregation, or did you come to these conclusions by studying the scriptures? sounds like you have given this some thought. Peace šŸ™‚

They have just prayed the prayer which they claim that they are sinners and been saved…

I get the feeling that most of the time when someone says that they are saved, it is to identify themselves as an OSAS believer. The reaction is likely to be a function of who they say it to:

An other OSAS believer will typically feel a bonding, since they share the same core OSAS beliefs.

Christians (including Catholics) who don’t believe in OSAS will feel that the ā€œI am Savedā€ person is both presumptuous and ill informed in scriptures and likely be put off by the statement…

Non Christians will be even more negative about the statement, feeling that.
a) the person is bragging about their personal sanctity
b) the person is putting them down, (since they are not saved)
c) the person will try to "save them:

Sometimes, I feel that the OSAS people repeat the " I am Saved" mantra so incessently as a way to convince themselves and others that it is in fact true. (as if repetition changes the truth,)

Since the question was ā€œwhat do you think when you hearā€¦ā€, my answer is that I’m thinking, ā€œplease Lord, don’t let me roll my eyes - where this person can see me anywayā€.

However, the first time I heard it, I know my eyes got very BIG - sheer disbelief and utter amazement. My son was my witness. I was also at a loss for words. That doesn’t happen as often as it should!!

Hi friends,

I wanted to start this thread to gain a better understanding on the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear a non catholic christian declare ā€œI am savedā€

thank you…

Well beings that you asked:D What comes to my mind is where does anyone have the authority to cast judgement on themself or others. It is for Christ to tell me when he meets me on Judgement day rather I am saved or not.

All through the bible it tells is what we need to do, in order to be Saved. But rather we made it or not is up to God. We know what in order to be saved we must keep his word and obey his commandments. But it is up to God who will make the grade and who will not. That is why there is judgement day.

God never said anyone will not be judged. He said we will all stand trial. When we meet him see him face to face. Then he will cast judgement not us.

So what comes to my mind is oh great another person thinking they can assume Gods role again:D

If I was in a flippant state of mind I’d probably think ā€œGood luck with thatā€!

More seriously I would think, ā€œOK this person has made a commitment to Jesus and that’s a good thing, but it’s not JUST ABOUT THAT, it’s about making that commitment every day, not just once, and living that commitment as best they can every day. And we’re all pulling for you and hope to see you in Heaven!ā€

Hi Melanie …Good to see you here too and thank you for your sentiments as you gave on the other thread

Thank God you are not in the flippant state of mind:thumbsup:
More seriously I would think, "OK this person has made a commitment to Jesus and that’s a good thing,
thank you šŸ™‚
but it’s not JUST ABOUT THAT, it’s about making that commitment every day,
agree 100%
not just once
that is OSAS which I do not believe in

unfortunately there are christians who do:(
and living that commitment as best they can every day.
absolutely agree 100%
And we’re all pulling for you and hope to see you in Heaven!"
I am looking forward to meeting you…my sister in Jesus Christ

God bless you

Hi all

thank you so much for your time in sharing your heart on this thread

I started this thread for the sole purpose of viewing what saved means to different people.

I am not surpised by the fact there are no two posts where saved means the same thing to 2 different people

My friends, I sure you will agree with me if we as christians can not agree on a small word like saved, how on earth can we agree on larger things

I found out if we learn the language or listen better we can communicate better one with another

If you are at all interested, it only took 25 posts to connect with other catholics in the following thread…

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=458823

which included MelanieAnne and Rinnie

It is my hope and prayer that we as christians can break down the barriers of communication which in a lot of cases is cause by presumption.

and start to listen and understand one another better

for as MalanieAnne said

whether you are Catholic Christian or non Catholic Christian we all have…

as MelanieAnne said…
made a commitment to Jesus and that’s a good thing
Amen

God bless all of you

The first thing that comes to mind is that they have a had a deep and soul changing experience with the Infinite Divinity of the universe, but that they also have a lifetime of sorting out exactly what that means.

I usually hope that they continue to work out that meaning for themselves, rather than listen to what sometimes is a charlatan preacher spoon feed them a message of divisiveness, anger, and exclusion.

They should pray and then do what Jesus said in Mark 16:16 ā€œThose who believe and are baptized will be savedā€.
Yes it is, and oh, I forgot, fundamentalist also baptize but not with the holy water but of the swimming pool, they pray for the person and baptize him.

From what I’ve read and heard from converts is that once they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior they are saved, it seems to fit the mold of OSAS. However I know from my catechesis that faith is only the start.

As well, our Lord said ā€œHe who perseveres to the end will be savedā€ (Matthew 10:22, 24:13, Mark 13:13). Sounds more like a journey rather than a one time event, no? So, the correct thing for them to say is ā€œI am being savedā€. Those who claim already to be saved are putting the Lord’s mercy to the test, are they not?

Amen to that Jusin, but would it not be great is all we had to do was believe and be baptised!😃

But we know that to believe and be baptised is only the start. We have the 10 commandments to follow:D

I agree Po18guy, and if St Paul was working his out in fear and trembling I think I will take the last seat on the bus:D St Paul shows us none of us can be that sure. All we can do is repent alot, Pray, and ask for Gods grace to persevere.

Speaking for myself, I pray when my day comes, God is in a really good, mood, and has tons of mercy left over and I get it all:D
