My mother did the best that she could under the circumstances. She met my dad at 14 years old. He is about 2 years older than her. My dad had a kid(my older brother) by 17. My mother started dating him and about 4 years later had me(I am a pill baby and she was taking antibiotics at the same time). They were not married. My father being the ladies man (at the time) told her that I wasn’t his. (both my parents have a Catholic background). He then marries another woman in the Catholic Church. He then tells my mother that he made a mistake and leaves his wife. While he is living in my mother’s house, my brother from his then wife was conceived. My dad still proceeded in divorce(him and his wife wanted the divorce). Then he got my mother pregnant with my twin sisters. My mother always wore the “pants” in the family. She baptized me Catholic. I went to Catholic school in 1st grade(I didn’t like it), so I didn’t go back and then she put me in Catholic school again in 7th grade(as a punishment for doing academically bad in 6th grade). I then went back to public school and never did academically bad. My first “sexual intercourse” talk had nothing to do with God. My father told me at age nine, that boys can have alot of intercourse and they are “cool”, if a girl does it then she is a “hoe”. He said if I am going to be promiscuous then be a “closet hoe”. My mother never had the talk with me. Needless to say I lost my “innocence” at 12. I was promiscuous from that point on. Until about age 23. At that point I had 4 partners and got pregnant and didn’t even know who the father was. I was so scared of my father( I was living with him at the time) to tell him that I didn’t know who the father was, I got an abortion. I was using condoms and none of them worked. I remember my mother saying if your gonna do your business use something. I had been taking birth control pills since 14. She told me if I get pregnant I am not having the baby. I never got pregnant while living in my mothers house. I knew that she would keep her word. My sister was 13 when she got pregnant and my mother made her get an abortion. She was a “feminist”. I think my mother traumatized my sister at the time. My sister was going to keep the baby and I was going to get a apartment for us. I was 20 at the time. My mother gave my sis the guilt trip so my sis ended up getting a abortion. My sis got pregnant at 16 and my mother said, “this is on you and you are not going to blame me for your decisions”. She kept my little nephew. She had another baby at 20. Her twin had a baby at 19. My dad condemns them both for having kids before they are married. The nerve. I never told him about my abortion. I didn’t want to get condemned from him.

I want to tell my mother that I wish she would have told me that God thought I was precious and would have wanted me to save myself for marriage. That would of made a world of difference to me. When she did find out about that I was active. She told me to go to planned parenthood and have me take the birth control pill and the Depro Vera Shot. She didn’t tell me that I was better than that. My father was more worried if I was going to have a reputation as a “hoe”. I want to ask them why? My mother has the mentality that if I show anger or frustration that she is still my mother and she will knock my teeth out. I don’t know how to approach her. Any advice would be welcome. Sorry for the venting.

Hello carjack,
I’m sorry to hear of your pain.

However, beyond praying for you and giving you moral support, I don’t think people in this forum have the capacity to help you, for your situation is complex.

I would suggest that you seek counseling. Catholic Charities in your area, can set you up.

Aside from that, pray to Jesus and of course his Blessed Mother, and ask them to give you compassion, so that you can forgive, as Jesus forgives. By all means, be gentle with those who have hurt you, and especially be gentle with yourself. You’ve been through a lot, and the path to healing is forgiveness, through Jesus Christ.

God Bless
Jim

All that has happened in the past to you and your family is in the past. I know how hard it can be to let go of it, but you must if you want to move on.

Your parents, like so many others these days, bought in the sexual revolution, hook, line, and sinker. That was their decision, not yours. Their attitudes are just that–theirs and not yours. You don’t owe them or anyone else an explanation for what you want to do as an adult.

Pray for them and live your life in Christ. Be free and be unafraid. God will take care of everything, past and present. Just put your life in his hands and go on. That’s advise from a gal who’s been around 60 years this September. I’ve seen lots of pain in my life, too. It comes with being alive. But, God is always there and will not fail you. So, take hope from that truth and be happy.

I hate to say this but you may have to just tell yourself… that you deserve better… and if you are like me, you may have to tell yourself over and over hundreds of times… because messages like the ones we have received so early in our lives… die hard… One reason i love the catholic faith so much is because the Church teaches we are all created in God’s image and tht our lives are sacred… But people do not send that message, wehther Catholic or not Catholic… So we are left to try to convince ourselves… thankfully, we have Jesus (Blessed Sacrament) to help us… He rejects NO one… 🙂
I am really sorry you were forced to have an abortion… Frankly, i feel all women (virtually) are “forced”… I wrote a letter to a senator recently, telling him about how abortion destroys women… (I am not sure he knew much about Post Abortion Syndrome)…
I don’t know how to approach her. .
are you sure you SHOULD approach her?
I can only speak for myself, but i feel there are some people (whether relatives or not) who should be left alone… If she hasn’t changed much from what you are saying… i am not sure you should bother trying to talk to her… You may just end up more miserable than before… I know what i am tlking about because i have been really depressed… miserable over how some relationship or other didn’t “work out”… Then i had to realize that the person i was trying to have a relationship with… doesn’t play by the same rules… etc… and tht the person may never… act “right”… That’s his/her choice… but i don’t feel it is right to let others abuse us…
Are you a practicing Catholic?
If so, Jesus lives in you in a very special way… and to hurt yourself is to hurt Him…
It is hard to give perfect advice because i don’t know you… but here is some advice i know is “perfect”:
Spend time with Jesus at the Blessed Sacrament… for as long as possible. I just go and “listen”, don’t say anything for a long, long time… and - can’t put into words what all comes to me… 🙂
Jesus, of all persons, knows what it is like to be abused, mistreated, hated, spit on… murdered…
You and I and so many others have been “murdered”, emotionally, spiritually… Jesus is what we need…
Praying for you… God bless…

Carjack,

I would have to agree with Jim, here.

May God grant you His peace.

First off, go to confession, because abortion is a mortal sin, than reflect on the Mercy of God and on what Jesus said: “Be merciful, for your Father in heaven is merciful”. Tell the confessor your situation, listen to his advice, and heed it.

Can I got to confession even though I didn’t get my Holy Communion of Confirmation?

Can I got to confession even though I didn’t get my Holy Communion of Confirmation?
Make an appointment with a priest and start by talking with him. He will be able to answer a good many of your questions as well as start you on the process of getting confirmed.

Since you are a baptized Catholic, you can go to confession.
I suggest you make an appointment with the priest, not go to the regular weekly confession. You will need longer time.
When you make the appointment, tell the secretary you need at least one hour.

I am glad you decide to choose a new spiritual life.
Do not allow your past to ruin your future. Keep on affirming yourself that you are precious in God’s eyes. Keep yourself on the right path. Keep on keeping on.

It will be good for you to receive counseling as Jim recommended.

You can do it.

God bless!

My mother has the mentality that … she is still my mother and she will knock my teeth out.
this statement shows that your mother will see anything you say as an accusation or condemnation. she is obviously not mature enough to handle her own shortcomings (how many of us are?), and will reject any talk about them to the point of verbal, and possibly physical, violence.
keep your parents at arms length. don’t eliminate them from your life, but keep very strict control over when and how often you see them, and what is discussed with them. now that you are becoming more interested in the Catholic church, try to find friends at your church that will be supportive of you in a positive way. you could then “ride their coat-tails” to grow in your life and receive healing for your past troubles. try not to dwell on the past, it will only weigh you down. look to the positive (healing and forgiveness) in the present and the future, and allow that to lift you up.

may the healing power of Christ be with you…
i will pray for you…

Dear carjack,

Yours is a heart-wrenching story; I will pray for you. I think there is some good advice in this thread about seeking the help of both a counselor and a priest. As Jim said, a counselor will be far more qualified to help you sort this out then the average Joe in the forums.
The priest can help you come back home to the church, which will help give you the grace and strength to overcome the pain of your childhood. May God bless and heal you.

i’m not sure i agree… but of course, it depends… all i know is that with me, it is better, so much better - to stay away from certain negative, depressing influences in my life… I don’t care if they are relatives - even parents - or not… If they are un-healthy, they will make you un-healthy and/or more so… It’s as simple as that…

I have found that i am a much better person, all the way around, when i am around truly Christian people… & leave those who are not ALONe.

My family has a chronic case of hereditary chutzpah going back several generations, so I won’t advise.

My heart hurts for you. I agree, find a good counselor and then a good Priest. I just got a book in today: Praying the Rosary for Inner Healing, it is from Our Sunday Visitor, it may be helpful to you. Good Bless.

I’m so sorry you hurt so!

Try to remember Jesus words about those who were responsible for His crucifixion - “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” That sounds very, very true of both of your parents. Pray for them. It will not only help their souls, but will help yours in your (quite understandable) resentment toward them, detaching from the past and forgiving them (and yourself). I’ve realized how probable it is for me to have the same qualities that I so dislike in my parents and grandparents, both genetically and through learned behaviors. Besides praying for them, I pray for a softened heart for myself to truly understand His Will.

I am sending up prayers for you, also.

Carjack, you had a rough childhood due to parents who didn’t have their act together. So did I. Mine left deep and lasting emotional and psychological scars I’ve had to intensely grapple with ever since. They still dog me. The bottom line is that we have to let it go. We have to get on with life, count our blessings, which include being alive and capable of living productive, satisfying lives as intelligent, sovereign adults. Our childhood is over. It’s hard to let go, but let go we must. Therapy can help immensely, and there’s nothing wrong with therapy. Just about everybody in modern society could use some therapy once in awhile. Hang in there. God loves you.🙂

You have been given some good advice, especially about counseling, although there can be some counselors that will lead you off. But remember this: you are a survivor; with God’s help you will make it through all this pain. You have seen the light. Be brave, get through the pain and move on. You are in my prayers. God bless you.

from carjack:
Can I got to confession even though I didn’t get my Holy Communion of Confirmation?
Carjack, I have three additional bits of advice for you.
  1. Talk to your priest about joining the parish RCIA, so that you can be catechized in the faith and prepare for full initiation. I suggest you wait on the sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) until you are fully taught about the sacrament.
  2. Call your diocesan office to see if Rachel’s Vineyard retreats are offered in your diocese. It will help you to find some of God’s healing you need and deserve. It is a ministry for those who have had an abortion.
rachelsvineyard.org/
  1. Remember that there is no sin larger than God’s capacity and willinessness to forgive us. Grow in your relationship with our Lord through constant prayer, by attending Mass, by reading scripture, and by studying and learning the faith. The more you learn to trust that our Lord wants you to seek His forgiveness, the more inclined you’ll be to forgive your parents. (and I’d like to repeat the advice that you find a good Christian counselor, to help you to forgive your parents and to heal from so much hurt).
