Dear all,
Nice to meet you! I am a working mom of a wonderful almost 5-year-old. I am a cradle catholic, had much faith before but I am being challenged on it at the moment due to a difficult marriage. I am an only child but blessed with excellent parents.
I have seen that people in this forum seem pretty nice and wise, therefore, it is great to be among other Catholics who support each other. 👍

Welcome!

I hope you are able to work though your marriage troubles. Many here on CAF have dealt with difficulties in their marriage so it’s a great place for advice.

God bless!

Sweetheart, I was in two marriages that didn’t work out. They were neither one Catholic. I always thought that was the reason the marriages failed. However, after being on this site for a while, I see marriages that one or the other should get out of for their own mental health! And they are both Catholic! I guess one can be Catholic and still a little devil! LOL!

Thank you all for your answers already! you are all wonderful! thank you! I feel welcome!

Here is a summary of my situation … thanks for the advice in advance! 🙂

Sorry my text is too long:

Part 1:

I am currently very stressed because of my family life and my work. I have been married for almost 6 years now, I had my child 1 year after my marriage. As a practicing catholic, I only started living with my husband after our wedding. I have always been present in church life, I used to be a catechist to children and participated during the mass with readings. I prayed to meet a good guy in order to raise a family in the faith. I met my husband at a local World Youth Day celebration. We got married 2 years later. We had the blessing to be married by a bishop and then have Pope Benedict’s blessing to the newlyweds on our honeymoon to Italy.

I am very different from my husband. He comes from the country side from a very large practicing catholic family. He is the oldest of 11th kids. At first I was happy to find a large family as I am an only child and this way I would have brothers and sisters. But all of this was just a blur, I found later on that he is not much close to his brothers and sisters and they could not care less - they never call or do anything with us besides Christmas, New Years or when I invite them to my son’s birthdays. Only 2 of his sisters show that they care, one of them is in a convent living a contemplative life (she is only 22!) and the other just go married but lives far. His parents are for me a bigger disappointment - they are “very practicing Catholics” reciting the rosary every day and being at church almost every day… but they don’t care about their son at all.

I have a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science. I currently work as a research associate in a big company. My husband works in mechanics and had his own company which failed. He is currently unemployed at the moment due to lack of work at his current workplace and issues with his employer.I used to be very outgoing but he doesn’t have many friends. I fell in love with him because he was a very nice and gentle person who loved me a lot and treated me like a princess. He had faith and seemed very generous visiting the elderly, giving money to the needy, participating in church groups, and besides that he was (is) good looking. Also, he didn’t pressure me to live with him as he respected my family beliefs and our faith. I wasn’t sure into marrying him as for me he didn’t have any type of higher education besides high school and did blue collar job. I am not judging at all as I respect everyone and find pride in any type of honest work. However, I never expected to marry a guy like that. However he always looked clean cut and was so nice and had faith and I thought that was the most important. He even decided to take some college classes but never finished. My parents did not agree at first but then they saw how nice he was and his faith they changed their minds. He appeared very well off and was respectful. He even told my parents that I wouldn’t need to work and would stay at home eventually when we had children. My mom talked to a priest who told her that it was better to have an honest guy with faith than a selfish and a cheater PhD. Before I got married, I told him that I couldn’t live in the country as I worked and that I had to be close to my parents who are not very young and I am an only child. He accepted that and we made a compromise to live in the suburbs. I then married this guy. His mom sent me a letter about 2 weeks before my wedding letting me know that his son had been violent to one of his girlfriends once… my then fiance said that it was not true that the girl was abusive and confronted him and he was just defending himself. He also told me that he had not the best relationship with his mother who used to beat him when he was little. Anyway we were so close to the wedding and had everything ready and I trusted in my guy that I married him.

However, everything changed.

Part 2:

After our honeymoon, I found out that he didn’t have a job… his company had almost failed and his “vacation” was actually him being fired. I started to pay rent on my own. He was several months unemployed and we lived and bought our things with his savings and with mine. Then he found a few jobs here and there but nothing permanent. His lack of instruction was the main factor. Then I got unexpectedly pregnant and he finally got a job. All changed after I gave birth. He was very possessive of the baby and always put me after the baby which is ok as babies should have priority however I had health issues after childbirth that made me physically fragile, I couldn’t even walk. I remember several times when the baby used to start crying and I wanted to go to the bathroom, he used to kind of force me to nurse the baby first even though I had to go. He use a lot of guilt. My parents stayed with us for a week and a half when I gave birth to help me as it had been a traumatizing delivery. He didn’t like it and was disrespectful stating that they were invading our privacy (which they weren’t). His parents only came to visit us 2 weeks after the baby was born. Then I was very much alone iwht him as he was not working again - he had lost his job one more time. As in Canada we have a 1 year mat leave, it was a very long year for me. He made my life impossible, we were always fighting, I remember crying often while nursing my baby, he used to call me a “baby who could not leave without her parents”. He even cheated on my once, kissing a girl he met at a bar after our fight and starting I relationship with her, and this when my baby was only 3 months. I found out through his phone. I left home and stayed at my parents. We went there to see a priest as my husband was suffering a lot (I don’t believe it now) and we were reconciled by New years. I forgave him and we started therapy which didn’t work well. The priest recommended a woman therapist who had faith so she would not tell us to divorce right away. After several months, she advised my husband to leave us and be separated for awhile. He never left because he didn’t know where to go. Even his mother told me that she wouldn’t take him in her house ( a very nice catholic thing to do right?). Anyway, we tried to work things out, it went better, he found a job and then I returned to work when my baby was 15th months. We fought very often, but made up, sometimes it was insane, i thought I was losing my mind. I used to pray for things to change but it didn’t. My parents were (are) desperate about the situation. They always helped us in babysitting the baby and taking care of him and spending time with him unlike my in laws who have never babysat our more than once so far.

I got promoted at my job but it required travelling and being absent from home. My husband encouraged me to take it as I would be paid more. He had several debts and we wanted to buy a house (we were living in an apartment). We had several fights regarding were to buy. We finally bought a house in the suburbs around 20 minutes from my parents (the only ones who support us). It was difficult for me to be away from my son sometimes leaving 2 days per week every week - and the job is very demanding, working ion my lap top until late in the night - and every time my husband woudl complaint I am never there, etc. - when actually it was my money to paid almost everythign including daycare. I still took care all the time of our son when I was at home and took him to his little gym classes, art classes, parks, etc. I did my share even thought when I was exhausted from the travel. My husband is good at cooking, which I dont like to do too much, but I clean and organize everything. The problem is that at every fight , my husband is extremely rude. He insults and when I talk to him and he doesn’t respond to me and i raise my voice, he even sometimes puts his feet in front of my face and asks me to shut up. He has done this in front of my child. I have cried so much during this six years than i have done in my entire life. I was very confident and happy before/. Now I feel drained out and feel I am 100 years old. My only joy is my son who is a beautiful caring little being who always tells me he loves me a lot.

When we finally bought a house, he told me that he had more than 20K in debt because he had not paid his taxes for 2-3 years before we were married - I just found out then because when he put the down payment (which was half half) the government wanted to seize the house. He paid the government with the bank (on a visa) and now he pays around 1000$ monthly to the bank.Which means that once again, I pay the mortgage, daycare, insurance, phone, net, etc. He has many debts, cant drive because he hasn’t paid parking tickets which now sum up to 1000$, he doesn’t open any envelopes: I do it and when I tell him about it he either leaves, shuts me up rudely, doesn’t say a word and asks me to leave him alone. I feel like a mother with an irresponsible 13 year old. I sometimes insult him too as I am only a human being - I cant help it sometimes. Now he is unemployed again, wanting to go back to school while I continue paying. My job is also horrible, I am tired mentally, emotionally, physically. I cry very often, I want to leave my job but I feel trapped as I have so many responsibilities! I just want to take my son and leave for awhile. I will not be traveling anymore but my job is still horribly demanding. I just make enough money for the basic necessities and maybe a bit more, but I dont spend in travels, or concerts, or other expensive things. All goes to my son’s education.

My intimate life was and still is almost non existent as every time I am with my husband I remember all the pain, insults and stress he has brought into my life that I feel repulsed to be with him. He of course doesn’t like that and reminds me at everytime, but when I try, I don’t enjoy it at all.

Part 3 and last:

I have to say thought that it happens sometimes that it goes well with my husband. He can be the most caring one moment and horrible the next. When I talk to him with a lot of tenderness he does things. otherwise he is a slob and sometimes doesn’t care if he looks dirty or has torn clothes, etc. It is embarrassing. Sometimes he went to pick my son at the daycare wearing his dirty mechanic clothes. We have fought several times in me wanting him to make a quick change into clean clothes in the bathroom before picking my son from the daycare he said he didn’t have time otherwise he would be late and that I was superficial and that he didn’t care about what people said and that if I was not happy to go to pick him up myself (when I was travelling - very wise). My son is little, but he will not like it if his daddy is like this when he grows up.

My husband has still supported me in stressful times (sometimes). He cooks and now that he is not working takes care of of my son who has finished daycare. He is in general a good father but sometimes either too strict or too permissive depending on the situation. My son loves him. Sometimes he is too confident of the well being of my son. My son broke his wrist falling at the park and burnt his fingers under his supervision. I will never forget that and sometimes makes me worried.

Now my husband has told me that he wants to become better, he wants to study to be finally able to be the provider. He currently takes care of the car, food (sometimes), car insurance but his debt is so high that he cannot contribute more. He feels trapped and I understand but the way he is insensitive (sometimes even laughing at me when I cry), and disrespectful to me and my parents, is very difficult to handle. However sometimes he is very nice and helps my parents fixing things in their house. it is difficult to understand. I still have a little tenderness for him : i see him as alone in the world, his family doesn’t care about him nor our son nor me and even his own mother told me to ask for an annulment. She his horrible and a hypocrite.

I feel desperate and lonely. I was never looking for someone rich or supersmart, only a good person who really loved me - I wanted to have at least 4 kids, but in this situation i can’t. I would like and pray to have another baby as my son is almost 5 years old and I am already 35, but my heart tells me I cannot have a child out of love. My parents would be so disappointed if I got pregnant because they dont’ like my husband at all now. They feel that we have been lied to and my dad says that God has failed us. I feel so sad that he is losing his faith because of my situation. My mom prays the rosary every day that my husband changes but she told me that I can’t go on like this and need to make a change in my life.

I don’t know what to do… we are in counseling again at the moment. I have chosen a man psychologist as the women didn’t work. I have enough and I look at an eventual separation. I have no interest in meeting someone else. He has killed all desires of love in me. I just want to have a quiet life with my son and take care of my parents as they are aging. I dont’ see my husband with me when I am old. I see myself alone.

I want to respect the sanctity of marriage but I see nothing holy in mine besides the blessing of my son. I feel that my husband sees me like his mother and tries to reflect his issues with her through me. I also feel that he is jealous of my relationship with my parents and that I make more money than he does. I also feel he is kind of depressed even if he always says that everything goes well. I wanted to be a stay at home mom but he hasn’t offered me this opportunity. I feel judged because on his side of the family almost all women stay at home with their children and on my side of the family I know they say that I am greedy for working all the time giving priority to $$$ which is not true. If they only knew… but it is too embarrassing to let them know.

I feel sometimes forgotten by God. I was so committed in the church. And I am living this because I married a man of “faith”. He still goes to mass and believes he is making efforts… I haven’t had communion for several months in a row because of my anger at him and at his family particularly his mom. Even if I go to confession my anger and frustration doesn’t go away. One of my friends had 2 abortions, had faith but was almost never at church - she found later a husband who is an architect, who is the provider and her in laws are wonderful. And I got this. I feel it is not fair, but who am I to judge any of God’s decisions. I am nothing and imperfect. But even if I don’t have faith or pray less now, I don’t’ forget Jesus. I think of Him every day of my life. I have taught my son his prayers and I want him to be close to Jesus, even if I don’t have much faith anymore, I want my son to have faith. When I read about Pope Francis, it moves me a lot, but I feel that all of this is impersonal as I feel that I got trapped into something I didn’t deserve. I know that there is a lot of suffering in the world at the moment, but we all carry our own cross.

Please have my family in your prayers as I want the best for my son.

Also, forgive me this was quite long. 😊

God bless you all and give us all much peace.

Take your son and leave. You have no obligation to spend your life being mistreated. It sounds like you’re better off mentally and financially without him.

You have 2 options. You can stay (and have more of the same) or you can leave, (possibly one day put this behind you).

:twocents: I second Et Cetera’s advice, for what it’s worth.

Who cares if he picks your son up in mechanic’s clothes? That is the one troubling thing about all of your posts. It does sound like you have a share of troubles but I believe your parents are likely too involved in your thoughts and day to day life.

The devil wants your marriage to fail.
The devil wants your son to be damaged and hurt by the divorce.

Pray for your spouse and yourself. ( I will pray for your whole family)
be sweet ( listen to the way you speak to him)
Stop crying all over the place. ( I know that sounds harsh but you mentioned it a lot)

Ask for the intercession of st Joseph for support for your husband as a worker and a spouse/father.

Yeah I agree. It sounds more like you are embarrassed by your husband because you feel his work is beneath yours than anything else. You repeatedly mention that you are a professional and the provider. You know, my mom was too. She was in the medical field (research), and dad was often the one taking care of us 11 kids. He had no college either. Mom was a PhD. He picked us up from school dirty in farm clothes, after he got out of the Army. When he was in the Army he picked us up in uniform. Dad even attended a few field trips “dirty” by some peoples standards I guess. But you know, mom never looked down in him like you are doing to your husband. And us kids never once were embarrassed by him. He was an awesome father and more kids should know a fathers love like we did. The only way your son will be embarrassed is if you or others teach him he should be. You knew before you married him he had a blue collar job. Deal with it. Jesus was a carpenter and so was St. Joseph. I seriously doubt Mary would look down on a father who enjoys being a father simply because he wears “dirty mechanics clothes.”

The rest of the things you mention aren’t much different than most married couples go through at one time or another. All of us have our struggles. It always bothers me when I see Catholics advising a spouse to leave. Abuse–yes leave. Because you are disappointed and have sour grapes–you knew ahead of time it might happen and took vows stating your were in this forever regardless of happiness.

Really? That’s the ** only** thing wrong in the situation? Not the fact that there husband is extremely disrespectful and demeaning to her, not the fact that her husband lied to her about her about his financial situation bed re marriage (by the way, if he lied to you because he thought you wouldn’t marry him if you knew the truth you do have grounds for an annulment op, fraud is grounds for an annulment).
The devil wants your marriage to fail.

The devil will settle quite happily for her staying in an abusive situation timately wearin her down and damaging her son through a dysfunctional family dynamic.🤷

Yes, pray for your spouse and your whole family, yes, be as sweet as you can and then take at least a temporary separation from your husband. You are on the verge of a complete breakdown and the. Church specifically says that either spouse can morally separate from the other under such circumstances. I would also look into separating you’d finances so that you will no longer be responsible for his exceptionally poor financial decisions, again, if this requires a civil divorce that is something the. Church explicitly says is moral in such cirumstnces, so long as you still act as a married woman (ie, no dating etc). However, seeing as there is definitely reason to suspect the marriage may even be invalid, at that point I would speak with a priest about it to see if he thinks you should set up an annulment petition for closure and to discuss over what the truth of your situation is. That way, if you are validly married you will know and that will make it easier to remain chaste even if living separately from your husband.
Ask for the intercession of st Joseph for support for your husband as a worker and a spouse/father.

RED FLAGS… FLASHING LIGHTS…BLARING SIRENS!

Oh my dear, why or why did you not give his mother a better hearing. This is such a bad sign. It sounds to me as though he has demonised his mother to you and you have been naive in your desire to marry and settle down. If a grown man still resorts to blaming his mother for how he is… he is not going to be good marriage material.

Even his good holy practicing Catholic mother has advised you to seek an annulment. The Priest who counselled you recommended that you separate for some time. He has already had an affair within the first years of your marriage.

Get yourself into counselling yourself and make some big changes. This marriage seems like an out of control train and I have a sense of fear for you.

Try to be calm and measured in making your decisions but don’t stay stagnant and undecided for long. You could lose your sense of worth and any self esteem you have.

Be brave and make good wise choices with the help of God and some counselling support.

I’m not saying that everyone in this thread has behaved in a such a manner, but these kinds of threads always really upset/anger me on this board. It is sickening to see women come on here and describe bad, and often abusive, marriages only to have people tell them to keep trying to make it work or to stop doing something that they feel puts the woman at fault. To the person who told this woman who was manipulated, lied to, and mistreated to stop crying so much…seriously take a hard look at your character. That’s horribly rude.

Dear Sister in Christ

This is not the time to cry of the past. Right now you have to think of what is best for your son . The way i see it (and i could be wrong and often am) you need to do what is good for yourself.
I think it would be best if you went back and stayed with your parents and take your son with you. Your husband needs to get his life in order and be the provider of the family the head of the house. If there are debts which you have mentioned sell the house and move back with your parents. I udnerstand you are in Canada and while you are not divorcing him you will be separating from him, since you are working you will get custody as the law in canada tends to lean towards mothers.
You are a much better person than me casue i would have slapped him silly for what he did when your child was 3 months.
Do what the preist said, this does not mean you dont love him, but it is time you love him in a way that he realizes that he needs to take your a bit more seriously and be the provider.
He ought to have honestly told you his financial situation before marriage, thuogh I am not sure that that is really a ground for annulment.
Not sure where in Canada you are but if you are in the big cities there is catholic family services who can help you.
Be assured of prayers.

Dear all,
I know I have not posted after my initial post. I had so much work and I wanted to take the time to think about my situation very deeply. I want to thank you all very much for the kind words and mercy that several of you have shown. Even though we cannot see each other physically, just the thought of having others be sensitive about my situation is already very helpful for me.
As you can see this situation is unbearable - some poster said that I was complaining too much or crying - well I am so powerless in front of all of this that I am breaking down. I don’t live in a marriage but in a constant hell where I am being told that everything is my fault. I am really miserable.
As an update, my husband and I started counseling for 5 weeks already - we got to a point that the counselor said that my husband is emotionally and verbally abusing me and asked me why I stayed in the marriage. Besides our son, there is honestly nothing keeping us together. The commitment that my husband has to stay in this marriage is only his view that marriage is forever… even though there is no basic respect or love. Yes, I was lied to before I got married and hopefully it will be a valid reason for an annullment. I also don’t think my husband is psychologically stable/normal.
We are having a priest who kind of knows our story for dinner next Saturday. I will have confession and then will let him know at what point we are at. I honestly don’t have any hope. I have realized that my husband doesn’t love me as he couldn’t say to the counselor nothing besides that he feels “attached” to me. I don’t even think that I have love for my husband. But the counselor said that it was not enough to keep living together. A big change must take place. Also, he said that the fact of living together was hurtful to our son, more than if we were separated. I am still being insulted, ignored and laughed at in front of my son. And I feel that he is taking advantage of me financially. The situation has not changed and I am afraid it never will. It will be 6 years this month. A sad date to remember for me instead of a joyful memory of our wedding.
Whenever I want to discuss about us, he says that I am the one who wants to break the family and that I don’t do any efforts. When I tell him it has been 6 years of me being mostly the breadwinner, forgiving his infidelity and standing his behavior, he says repeatedly: " it’s always the fault of others, right?"
It has been 6 years of this hell. For my sanity ( i have been hitting myself and pulling my hair because i feel so powerless) - Iwill have to take a decision asap. Enough is enough.

Esmeralda,

I am sorry you are going through this. It seems that you have made the decision to leave him. A question: would you want your child to become an adult like your husband or to have them think that is how a woman should be treated. You and your son deserve better!

For the lies he told you prior to your marriage and the abuse should be enough for the annulment – but you should discuss with a Priest. You are always welcome to post on the forum when you need to “talk” we are all here to support each other.

May God grant you peace and strength.

P.S. to those that posted that you are being selfish or embarrassed by your abuser, grow up! When the time comes and you are in need / looking for support may you be given the help you need and not be told that YOU are the problem.

Many are baptized and are called Catholic, but the fact is that many are not truly converted
Did you ever pray together, make Jesus the center of your married life? If one is true to his or her faith, they will practice the tenants of that.Faith Love is the greatest command, love of God and love of neighbor (you and him in this case) What you explained showed that he had a lack of virtue, or at least weak in virtue. Also he couldn’t give you what he didn’t possess, and that’s an abundance of love. His own life lacked it, especially one of ll kids. You must believe that Satan is real and wants to destroy you and yours. You must trust God, and tell your husband that you can’t go on like this and in order to correct the situation you must separate. When he realizes this, it may bring him to his senses. If he is willing to see a priest or christian marriage counselor and make a real attempt to live a christian life with prayer, and God as the center of your married life then there is a good possibility your situation will become better. If he is not willing, or resists, then for the sake of your health, and love for your son who needs a healthy mother ( it would be God’s will ) you are the bread winner., then separate. I do not suggest divorce, but separation. there is no situation that God can not remedy, with Him there is always hope. Keep putting your faith in Jesus, after all the don’t call Him redeemer for nothing! Without God we can do nothing. (He said it,) He must be first in our lives, if He isn’t things will never go well, if it seems they are, it is an illusion and time will tell. God love and heal you both.

Being a mechanic is not a reason why he cannot provide for your family. There are mechanics who can provide for the family and there are also families where women are the bread earners because their husbands aren`t lucky to find a job. I think the problem with your husband is his lack of empathy. He sounds like a Narcisistic person. Putting the blame on you, insulting you, belittling you are all tactics of a manipulative person to feed their ego.

There is something here that the mother is not telling you. I am sure her son is psychologically or psychiatrically ill. Why would she send you a letter 2 weeks before your wedding warning you about her son. She is also telling you to get an annulment. She may know something that you don’t. Remember your husband is a grown man. Stop making excuses for his rude, lazy and irresponsible behavior. Stop giving him money.

I agree with you completely. Let’s not forget that OP said the husband cheated on her in addition to be so dismissive of her emotions, the massive pressure she has as the breadwinner and in my opinion, manipulative. The fact the he omitted in telling her of his massive debt and is making her pay for most if not all the expenses without even being the least bit grateful is appalling. There is something to be said if his own mother won’t let him stay at her home. I always take a look at the relationship a potential partner has with his family before I proceed any further. That says a lot, IMO.

Dear Esmeralda79, I am so sorry you are going through this. I will pray for your family. I think you and the baby are better off without him. Thankfully you have some amazing parents who can help you with the child. Your husband clearly has made no effort to improve and the way he emotionally abuses you like that, especially in front of your child, is not healthily nor the type of thing you want to expose your baby to when he grows up and can make sense of what is going on. I am always pro-marriage and believe couples should try everything, but you can’t force someone to change or respect you. Talk to a priest, seek an attorney and make preparations.
