Hi everyone, I was really happy at Mass, especially after I had eaten and drank the Body and Blood of our Lord. After Mass had ended, there was a spokes person from a local political party telling all the Hispanic community to be in favor of Obama’s universal health care plan because it will benefit everyone, this was basically the gist of it. After this guy finished speaking, everyone applauded him. As soon as he started speaking about this I felt like I was punched in the gut. I confronted this man outside of the church and told him that I do not have anything against the health care plan, as long as abortion and euthanasia were not included in the bill. He immediately wanted to water down the situation by saying, “well thats just in case of an emergency, like rape. If we want something thats good for the community we will have to accept what is bad as well.” and I told him that me as a Catholic can not call myself a Catholic if I am in favor of abortion and euthanasia. That I follow the teachings of the Church and in no way we are suppose to be in favor of such things. He told me that with every proposal there will be other congress men that will want to pass their own agenda as well and that he is also Catholic and this is his community, shook my hand and started walking away. Im planning on talking the our parish priest about the situation, since we had a priest from another Church give Mass today.

I would contact your local Bishop…parishes should not be advocating Obama and his administration–no how, no way. Let alone pushing his views on Catholics! I am sorry you went through this!

Aw man, that’s terrible!!! Definitely talk to your parish priest. This is serious stuff, the healthcare reform, as it is, is almost worse than the Freedom of Choice Act in the sense that it disguises it and mixes it in something that many can perceive as good. It promotes the “right” to abortion and euthanasia, and the funding for it, mixed in with other stuff. It is different to try to pass an “act” or a “bill” that solely affects abortion/euthanasia, its easier to understand that and to see what its effects would be, but when you throw it in there with a bunch of other stuff, its a lot easier to get away with. You can check out what a lot of the pro-life organizations have to say about it and the info they have on it. It is quite scary if you ask me.

Thank you for your insight on this matter. I will definetly talk to him, I really felt bad while he started talking about it, and got more mad, when he was dodging my statements.

I agree that this talk was inappropriate for Mass because it gives the impression that the Catholic Church is behind a particular political party and a highly particular form of government. In fact, the Obama health plan is just one of many possible ways to provide services to those in need. (And many people would argue that this plan will not be the best means of providing health insurance but that’s not really the issue here.) As you point out, there are some highly problematic components, such as abortion provisions.

If you speak to your pastor, I suggest that you tell him this speaker makes people feel like they do not have the right to disagree with this particular health plan. And say that in the future you’d hope such talks (if your Church wants to sponsor them) take place in the Church hall.

This is my opinion, but I think that parishes can explain how a particular government plan does or does not meet our Catholic obligation to help the poor. But in most cases I don’t think the Church should be telling people that one method of helping the poor is better than another.

You know, this is terrible. I don’t know how this guy can get away with saying that kind of thing when people are there for mass. It’s not the time or the place. If he wants to promote his agenda, he should write editorials or something. Keep politics away from the pulpit, I say.

(Preaching against abortion is not politics, it’s morallity, IMO)

Obama’s health care plan does NOT support euthanasia. It provides a consultation for elderly patients about “end of life issues” - something that isn’t currently covered by Medicare/Medicaid. Basically, it’s a chance to talk about what kind of life-saving measures you want, whether or not you prefer to die at home rather than the ICU, what types of palliative care you want … the kinds of things that ought to be part of every person’s living will. The health care plan is NOT promoting euthanasia. This is, quite frankly, a distortion.

Obama has also said that we have a tradition of not funding abortion with federal money (you can disagree with this statement if you want … it depends on how you define “funding”, etc.), even though he is personally pro-choice. I certainly hope that if a health care plan comes to a vote in which abortion is federally funded, Catholic get together not to stop the bill, but to amend it so that the slaughter of innocents is not tolerated.

It’s vital that, as informed citizens, we do research on these issues, and not take at face value what talking heads say - those on the right or the left. Mass media is a tool of corporations, which are concerned with entertainment, NOT information delivery.

You sound like a person who really cares about what happens to America. Please go find information - lots of it - from the left and the right and the center. Look at whose interests are being served by what talking head; look at the agenda people are pushing and what they serve to gain by your buying into their rhetoric (most of the time: dollars and power). Then make a decision and fight for it.

The talk was totally inappropriate, and no once can explain how it is helping the poor to promote abortion and euthanasia, which is the ultimate goal of this ‘health care’ scheme.

Eugenics is an ugly idea, no matter what fuzzy-bunny terms it is wrapped up in by its apologists.

Please, everyone, do yourself a favor and look up the phrase ‘life not worthy of living.’ See where it originated.

Thanks. Now at last I understand the concerns of Catholic Americans with the proposed health care plan. I couldn’t understand what the fuss was about before.

I agree 125%

I definitely suggest talk to your parish priest and discuss how you felt about the issues.

There is a movie is called ‘Come What May’, ( I may misunderstood the title ) it is about abortion. I saw the movie and it was interesting. I suggest to see it. I believe you can get it any Christian stores.

With Health Care Plan, I don’t think Abortion should not be included. I am Pro-LIfe period.

If a member of a political party spoke AS a member of a political party, you need to document and get this to the Bishop. This violates all sorts of things, and could put YOUR Parish and Diocese in a bad situation with the IRS.

* That sums up my thoughts.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why this was permitted to go on after your mass today, riviera. I would write to your Bishop, I echo everyone else here. *

I agree with what’s been stated. You can bet I’d be upset as well! In no way should someone be speaking politically right after Mass. Especially about the health care reform and not pointing out what it could mean for those of us who are pro-life. Without all the facts it could easily get people to support it, not knowing what it all could entail.

You should definitely talk with your regular priest about this, and if he thinks nothing of it, then talk with the bishop.

Ugh, this doesn’t sound good. From your post, would it be safe for me to assume that this was at a Spanish Mass?

Unfortunately, I have found that liberal politics often creep into Spanish-speaking Catholic functions, because radical/liberal political groups often seek out and target minority and immigrant groups. Even worse, the bishop is often unaware of what’s going on because the language barrier prevents him from supervising the Spanish-speaking community. (Sometimes, even the pastor doesn’t know what’s going on, in the cases where an outside priest is brought in for Spanish Mass!)

This was a problem at my parish during the 80s, when the Spanish-speaking priests openly supported the FMLN. Fortunately, now we have a very holy priest as a pastor who is bilingual and would never tolerate anything like this happening.

Yes this was a Spanish Mass, well our parish is predominantly Hispanic. I think our 2 parish priests were out serving other parishes. I think that the problem with Hispanics in general, and I am sorry to say this, are gullible to what they hear in the news or from politicians in general. I mean, we take everything at face value with out really finding out for themselves the facts. This is why this man was applauded after his little “speech”. Sadly, most of us do not want to take the time and really research and get the facts. So I believe that it is a matter of ignorance that occurs within Hispanic communities. Man, I really felt like getting up in the middle of his speech and reveal what he really is doing in promoting this agenda, but I knew that it wasnt the ideal thing to do. I actually emailed one of the priests and advised him of my concern over this person speaking during the announcements. I know that the priest may want to talk to me about it, so I am ready to tell him face to face how I felt about this whole ordeal.

No people talk about Pro-Life stuff all the time, in your logic I could protest that the Church is promoting the Republican party and their torture, unjust wars, (increase in abortion rates, teen pregnancy etc…) but I don’t because I’m Pro-Life (yes there are Pro-Life Democrats).

I don’t want to get into the current plan because I don’t think there has been enough involvement from the Republican side of the house and we really don’t want a Democrats only bill even if they have a majority. We see where the Republican only measures from the early part of the Bush administration got us, why would we repeat that?

However I believe that basic health care is a right. Early last Century we were arguing about Child labor laws and Women Voting… none of us would question those “rights” although 100 years before that they would have laughed at the possibility. I believe 100 years from now people will say, remember when people lost their entire savings because they got sick? remember we the US was the most powerful and prosperous nation on earth but ranked 33 in infant mortality rate because they wouldn’t provide prenatal care and basic medical care to mothers or their children once they were born?

The Catholic Church has always fought for the basic rights of individuals and the Pope’s latest encyclical should help guide us as well. It’s kind of like the updated 7 Deadly Sins released last summer. I continually see far right Catholics joking about us “liberals” and “the environment” when they are actually going against the teachings of their Church if they intentionally pollute when they don’t have to.

Just stuff to think about… I do agree that I’m very concerned about the abortion funding in it.

Sadly, the parish priest probably suports the health care bill

I don’t believe there are any protections for practicing Catholics with Obama’s plan. This is a big problem. We are already seeing Catholics being pressured to participate or perform abortions and other immoral acts. Many of the states have not renewed their conscience clauses for religious reasons.

Don’t even go there. The above is pure marxist nonsense, and the ONE THOUSAND PAGE ‘health care’ bill is simply eugenics in disguise.

The right to life precedes ALL other rights; what happened in that church was wrong any way you look at it.
