Then volunteer to help the homeless, or serve as a manual worker (volunteer) at a rescue mission doing hard work in the background, or get in touch with an organization that helps the mentally-ill and volunteer to befriend these people who are often utterly ignored and feared by “the community,” or help out in a home for children with multiple disabilities, or volunteer at a hospital, or befriend senior citizens and help them with their daily chores…For someone struggling against self-abuse and the viewing of pornography, being out in town can be a near occasion of sin, as well as a very serious temptation to engage in those sins once one returns home.
I would put forward that someone who cannot control their desires past a couple of days most certainly would have great issue being exposed to others who are immodestly dressed. Let’s face it, it’s quite easy to spend a couple of hours running errands and to be exposed to several dozen such people during these hotter months. Seeing someone for merely a few seconds could lead to hours of temptation, especially in those who have been severely weakened by viewing days and days and days worth of pornography.
…or take up a demanding hobby like building remote-control airplanes (there are local clubs for those who do this, and my son-in-law is president of the club in his city), or restoring old cars or raising rabbits for fun and profit…
…Or…get a job, or several jobs.
Someone who “cannot control their desires” is more likely to meet up with women dressed attractively at a Mass as they are at a shelter for disabled children or at a club meeting for rabbit rearing.
Retreating will not help someone overcome desires. Facing the fight head-on will help them.
They need to re-wire their brain and learn to deal with inappropriate thoughts by developing new wholesome habits, and staying busy is a wonderful way to facilitate this process. Get a counselor (hopefully a Christian counselor, since many secular counselors will see no sin in masturbation or even porn viewing), or seek help from an older man that you respect who can help you to learn the skills that you need to avoid sin. I’m betting that the man will say many of the same things I’m saying, mainly, get a job.
And turn off the computer.
