I Can Rarely Recieve Communion Because of Sin

For someone struggling against self-abuse and the viewing of pornography, being out in town can be a near occasion of sin, as well as a very serious temptation to engage in those sins once one returns home.

I would put forward that someone who cannot control their desires past a couple of days most certainly would have great issue being exposed to others who are immodestly dressed. Let’s face it, it’s quite easy to spend a couple of hours running errands and to be exposed to several dozen such people during these hotter months. Seeing someone for merely a few seconds could lead to hours of temptation, especially in those who have been severely weakened by viewing days and days and days worth of pornography.
Then volunteer to help the homeless, or serve as a manual worker (volunteer) at a rescue mission doing hard work in the background, or get in touch with an organization that helps the mentally-ill and volunteer to befriend these people who are often utterly ignored and feared by “the community,” or help out in a home for children with multiple disabilities, or volunteer at a hospital, or befriend senior citizens and help them with their daily chores…

…or take up a demanding hobby like building remote-control airplanes (there are local clubs for those who do this, and my son-in-law is president of the club in his city), or restoring old cars or raising rabbits for fun and profit…

…Or…get a job, or several jobs.

Someone who “cannot control their desires” is more likely to meet up with women dressed attractively at a Mass as they are at a shelter for disabled children or at a club meeting for rabbit rearing.

Retreating will not help someone overcome desires. Facing the fight head-on will help them.

They need to re-wire their brain and learn to deal with inappropriate thoughts by developing new wholesome habits, and staying busy is a wonderful way to facilitate this process. Get a counselor (hopefully a Christian counselor, since many secular counselors will see no sin in masturbation or even porn viewing), or seek help from an older man that you respect who can help you to learn the skills that you need to avoid sin. I’m betting that the man will say many of the same things I’m saying, mainly, get a job.

And turn off the computer. 🙂 A computer makes it too easy to fall into the sin of view porn. It was a lot harder to view porn in the old days, when you had to actually go to the porno shop and buy it. My point is, avoid temptation and keep your mind and body BUSY, and learn new ways of thinking and acting from an older man who has conquered this sin.

Beautiful answer

I’ve gotten to a point where receiving communion is the highlight of my week. Literally, nothing else compares because I don’t do anything else but work and basically sit at home because of my hours (I work from 3pm to 11), including weekends. This is good because I can attend morning masses, so I can’t complain about that, but it also means that I can’t make it to confession in my parish (because confessions are heard at 3:30 on saturdays when I work). It also means I can’t make it to confession at the local shrine because they hear it from 1 to 4, and I have to leave at 2, and it’s kind of out of the way, and etc. etc.

Long story short, I’ve been asking the priest after mass on sunday every week, and I’ve been going every week, but that’s the problem, it’s after mass. Which means I always end up having to wait a whole other week before I could even receive communion again. And since I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I fall into mortal sin on a weekly basis, sometimes a daily basis, I usually have to skip communion once again the following week and go to confession instead, and then wait another week…etc. etc. and the cycle repeats week after week. I don’t even remember the last time I was in a church and worthy to receive communion.

Another thing is, I enjoy very much going to daily mass, but my parish has it only on thursdays and fridays. Because of my work schedule, I often attend, and they even do adoration after mass on thursdays, so I’m blessed with that as well… BUT I can’t seem to go three days from sunday to thursday without falling back into mortal sin, so that means I often can’t even receive communion on the closest day after the sunday I receive absolution. I can’t bug the priest after mass on thursdays because they’re doing adoration at that time. I can’t bug the priest on fridays either because they shut the place down, so I’m always left to waiting for sunday, because sunday is when the priest is actually there after mass… and when I call to make an appointment, the parish tells me to see him after mass on sundays anyways, which is what I’m already doing.

So I don’t know what to do… I find the whole thing humorous and perplexing. I know ultimately it’s my fault because it’s my sin that’s snagging me every week, but I would like to receive communion because I believe it would help.
I agree with other posters that you should consult with your priest as to whether you may receive the Eucharist.

Since your priest is willing to hear your Confession after Mass, perhaps he would be willing to give you Communion after your confession, outside of Mass. If you explain your situation to him, he might be more than willing to accommodate. It is important for you to receive the Eucharist. It is a gift, a Grace, that God has given us in order to strengthen us in our journey and it can be an important tool in your battle against this sin.
