At least the kid is thinking about Christianity and questioning it. This is a good start.

I am a parish 8th Grade Religious Education Teacher. We pass out anonymous surveys at the beginning of the year to determine where our students are in their faith.
Sorry, but I’m a little confused. Doesn’t ‘Religious Education Teacher’ require you to teach about all religions?

Edit: I’ve just noiced you are a parish 8th Grade Religious Education Teacher. So this is a Catholic school?

8th graders? I’m pretty sure that the student in question is trying to be cool. Very immature.
Could this 8th grader sincerely not believe in God? Surely there are 8th graders who sincerely believe in God.

It seems like reacting would be giving them what they want. Is it a Catholic school?

A few classes ago, we received an index card from a student that asked; what proof do you have that God Exists.
Since God asks for Faith - which is not Blind - which is an opposite to proof…
it can be realized as connecting to why God created Humans with Free Will…
With my emphasis on Why…

One of the index-card feedbacks that I received after class stated, “I cannot wait to debunk Christianity”.
An immature atheist trying to get a rise out of you. Probably has a lot of misconceptions about Christianity and is ignorant to the rich philosophical history that exists in it’s support.

Yes… said student has not come to the realization yet - that Christianity is not de-bunkable.

When Jesus walked this Earth - His enemies thought that having Him executed would solve their Hate

Then? He rose from the Dead - God’s Holy Spirit came upon Man - and most of the World accepts a Creator whilst acknowledging JESUS and Virgin Mary - Christians and Moslems

There’s still an ongoing attempt to AntiChristian-ly destroy Christianity …

We know that - and it;'s very strong - and it too has already been defeated …

For… SURPRISE! Jesus Christ Returns and all who’ve retained Faith in Him - are the Victors!

I’d simply tell them, “Good luck young man/lady. People have tried for 2,000+ years. I’m eagerly awaiting your new and well thought out arguments.”

The silver lining is that the student is very interested and will likely engage with Christianity in a way many apathetic “nones” today are not. There is always the risk that exploring the salvation history, the gospel, and the church earnestly will spark faith.

LOL!! Join the club, kid. People have been trying for centuries . . . .

I haven’t read the 50+ thread replies, but yea, I’d let it go and see if s/he has the chutzpah to bring it up in class. If so, entertain it and see where the discussion takes you.

I have no motive in buttering you up like this, but your class sounds like just the kind I would have loved in middle school! Classical educators wisely know that this is the time when kids start getting cheeky, and competent teachers can channel this quality in great ways.

I am am open minded agnostic who tends towards being skeptical about God. have a degree in philosophy. I am a teacher. (Not that any of this means anything, I just want to lay out my background)

While I am an open-minded non-believer, I do not believe anything about science disproves with certainty God’s existence. There is no magic bullet that makes God impossible or unnecessary. Even in a secular public school like where I teach, if a student tried to say science disproves God, I would take them to task. It doesn’t, and making hasty conclusions in any direction is always bad scholarship.

The classic proofs for God has so many holes. I wouldn’t start there. I would start by showing your students that our scientific knowledge is not complete, always changing, and cannot touch on God whatsoever.

Connected. For years… upon years.

some folks actively engaged in attempting to Destroy Christianity

although they’ve had some successes so to speak
and brim with smirks, sarcasm, smugness .
we know that they too are inevidibly heading
toward the greatest Defeat in all of History …
