Which is the 1 thing that people absolutely will not do because they don’t want to appear to be “Catholic”?

I have some family & friends who
  1. will not put a crucifix on their walls because “we look toward the resurrected Christ only” but will read the crucifixion account and quote it word for word.
  2. will not accept holy cards (with no prayer on the back) but have a beautiful picture of Jesus knocking on a door displayed in their home.
  3. believe in the Trinity but make fun of us if we cross ourselves.
  4. won’t display pictures of Jesus, Mary, etc. but proudly display a huge expensive nativity scene in their home (at the proper time of course).
etc., etc., etc.

That’s called pride and stubborness. Makes it kind of hard to let Jesus in, doesn’t it?

    Who are you asking?..I am Methodist, & I do a lot of these things. I am sure that there are people who think there is something wrong with me. Frankly, I don’t care.
Do I know people who think these things are “too Catholic”? Yeah. They are Baptist & Presbyterian mostly.I think that some things they do, are too Baptist & too Presbyterian.
OK, there is one woman in my church that had a hissy fit when we put up a tapestry of the Virgin Mary. The picture is still there. She is probably still unhappy, but we don’t have to listen to it so much anymore…She knows nobody agrees with her. (Of course, she is one of those 😛 chronic complainers, anyway).

You’re a good sport Zooey. I wonder what things I’m avoiding so that I don’t appear too Methodist?😃

Some people hesitate to make the sign of the cross before praying at mealtime while in public…however, I enjoy doing it 🙂

I voted “other.” Now that I’m no longer Roman Catholic, I do at times feel a little self-conscious about some of the overtly Catholic things, but it’s very contextual. In my Anglican parish for instance, we have an Orthodox cross on one wall, and a large brass cross on the altar, but no crucifixes. We cross ourselves in prayer. The biggest thing I refrain from doing now is what I like to call mumbling rapidfire prayers, like saying a quick Hail Mary if something shocks me, or utter “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!” and things like that. It just seems a bit over the top now.

With some people all of the above …

Giving into these fears though shows our own weakness and lack of something … 😦

At Easter time a Baptist friend of mine and I were picking out some cards at Hallmark for friends/relatives. We’re both pretty religious, and we were looking in that section rather than the eggs and bunnies and “happy spring” card section. I picked up a what I thought was beautiful card with a picture of Christ on the front, in what looked to be like a stained glass sort of picture, maybe in like a Russian style. “how about this one? It’s pretty” I said to her. She hesitated and said, “It’s a little too…icon-y I think.” I was like, “oh…ok.” She ended up getting one that had a little poem about Jesus on the front with pictures of flowers or something. I never really knew what she meant by that remark, until I realized that she really has an aversion to anything that may be considered Catholic.

It’s definetly not true of all Protestants though, because my mom is Lutheran and she has this little ceramic bust of Mary holding the baby Jesus in the living room that plays “Ave Maria” and she finds nothing wrong with that. It’s probably a lot to do with that person’s particular religious traditon, how they were raised and view things, etc. That’s my guess, anyway.

You mean you don’t have a copy of one of these photographs? They’re collector’s items.

This is the one act I was thinking about when I looked at this poll.

I still need to work on this myself at times. We/I should not be embarrassed of or for Jesus.

Where does one start. I have a presbyterian churchin my area that displays a Creche at Christmas. It would make Saint Francis very happy . I don’t think Knox or Calvin would be.
I had an Evangelical Lutheran friend who wasn’t crazy about Catholics and their symbols. She moved to a new city and joined the nearest Lutheran church. I gather she thought al Lutheran churches were the same.
I attended her first service with her. The minister walked into the sanctuary wearing a Cassock with a Crucifix ! They rang a bell when he entered .There was a Red votive light burning over what Catholics would call the alter. She was in shock ! I have been to anglo-Catholic episcopalian services that seemed more Catholic than my local parish Mass.
Than there is the Hymn "Ave Maria "
. It is worth a regiment of Jesuits. It has been sung and played in more none Catholic churches than anyone can count.
People just like it.

This thread made me chuckle. I have just recently started wearing a crucifix necklace, and try to make sure that it is visible over my shirt. Why??

I have seven children, ranging from one to eleven years old. When I am out with them all, it is my hope that we, all together, can serve as a silent witness to the faith, to the blessings of large families, and hopefully encourage people to rethink the whole contraceptive mentality.

Unfortunately, more and more people have come up to me lately to ask if I am MORMON, what with all the kids and all.

AARGH!! When I said I wanted to serve as a witness to the faith, I meant the CATHOLIC FAITH!!! So, I actually do want people to know that I am Catholic, hence a small but visible crucifix. 😃

Making the sign of the cross in public. Its a poor habit but I don’t usually pray in public.

I say a silent prayer before meals (but only sometimes), but I admire folks who can just stop for a few moments cross themselves, pray and end with a sign of the cross.

I used to go to lunch with another Catholic friend and she did this regularly. She will probably go straight to Heaven while I spend a few years in Purgatory. :crying:

I was once afraid of making the sign of the cross in front of my evangelical friends, but now I am stronger and do it when I pray with them. Our bus always passes a Catholic church and about 5 of us always make the sign of the Cross, including my protestant friend. The funny thing is that he does it when passing all churches!!

LOL! I’ve done most of these most of my life, and I’m only now waiting for the RCIA to start 😃

As a protestant, I loved shopping at Catholic bookstores, I always showed the proper respect to Nuns and Priests and called them Sister and Father. Actually the only thing I didn’t do was cross myself because since I wasn’t a Catholic I felt this would be considered disrespectful even though I wasn’t being disrespectful.

God Bless

I wouldnt have considered it disrespectful at all, I would have took it as a honest and respectful gesture. Welcome to RCIA, Welcome! I

I am proud that i am a Catholic. And i guess almost everyone in my neighbourhood are catholic. So i guess i don’t have problem.

Where I used to live, there’s a Congregational Church that displays a lifesize creche! Right across the street from the Catholic Church, which also display a creche, but not a lifesize one. 🙂

Where I live, there are so many Catholics, that I don’t think anyone ever worries about looking “too Catholic”.
