I can't forgive my cousin

A child molester is about to marry. He will presumably have children. Once they are old enough, he can molest them. Then the whole cycle of molestation will begin, in another generation.

Honestly, I don’t know what would consist of overkill in this situation. If I were involved in this, I would do whatever it took, to stop this marriage.

And I think that the OP could learn something from this movie. The girl who did not object to the wedding - well, she went on to lead a life of regret.
This girl has shown tremendous courage. She informed the priest, and the fiancee through the priest. The bride, groom, and the priest are responsible for this marriage, she is not. She has done her duty, and she has shown tremendous courage doing so!

As for the happy couple, who can say if they are capable of having children? Who can say if they’ll stay married more than the 9 months minimum it takes to give birth to a child? Who can say if either of them or any one of us won’t come down with a terminal illness or be run over by a bus next Thursday? Who can say that this bride won’t pull her handgun out of her garter and threaten to turn her new husband from a rooster to a hen with one shot if he doesn’t behave himself like a grown up responsible human being?

Sorry to personally pick on you, but it almost seems like you made this account just to respond to this particular thread. And your responses seem to have the agenda of defending Ben, his privacy, and his future marriage.

The OP is in a particular situation, she and her sister are both victims of sexual assault by this man and it is particularly hard for them to talk about it. She did much more than her duty.

The same cannot be said for her parents, who knew about the incident. Their duty was to expose this man, to go to the authorities, to protect their younger daughter and other children from him.

If you know someone enjoys murdering people (and sexual assault IMO is a crime comparable to murder in seriousness, because of the perversity and the extent of the damage to the victims, there have even been considerations of using the death penalty for child rape reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN1128546220080413), would you take the risk that the person changed or report him to the authorities?

I don’t think I would be able to talk to the authorities. This story is already a big mess, if I get the police involved I’m scared it will be even worse. Plus my sister doesn’t want to, and I’m not doing it without her. And it will seem really shady to do something like this a week before Ben’s wedding. I don’t even have my parent’s support, and with no proof of what happened they could easily say that I’m making this up. They’re already labeling me as hysterical and other things for not wanting to go to his wedding.

I think its time for the OP to contact someone outside the family and friends group. Including the priest. The priest is deeply involved with the whole family. He might feel trapped in a corner and lacks the courage to take the steps that are truly necessary to bring to justice this guy.
I’d say go to the police.
The priest I talked to is not deeply involved with my family. The priest that has been there since my childhood is retiring in a few weeks, and about two years ago a new priest came and started celebrating mass once in a while. He will be taking over full time soon. He is the one I talked to. He isn’t really close to us (yet).
Who can say if either of them or any one of us won’t come down with a terminal illness or be run over by a bus next Thursday?
It’s really ironic that you’re saying this today, because Ben’s fiancée got in a car accident today. Fortunately it was a small accident, no one got hurt.

Oh really? Then why did I say that if it were me I’d tell them I’d be delighted to show up in my dress with “Ben sexually molested/raped me at age 4” embroidered all over it, accompanied by my sister in her “Ben sexually molested/raped me at age 6” signature dress?
If it were me, would I really do that?
I would really do that. As they have said here, I have very poor taste.
I also said I’d seriously consider toasting "to the bride! And congratulate the groom for managing to stay out of jail in spite of having sexually abused my sister and I as children.
Would I really do that too?
Probably. But long before any of that, I wouldn’t have bothered at all with the priest. I would have talked to the fiancee and her mother.

Would I go to the authorities? Of course it is always a good idea to go to the authorities, but the odds on the authorities doing anything at all other than yawning and saying “take a number” are not particularly good given the history of this cold case where they have no evidence, no documentation, no witnesses, and the parents didn’t even file a complaint. Where I come from, the “authorities” pretty much fill out the forms when people are dead. They called it “The Knife and Gun Club” on the national television news magazine.

/hug I am so sorry.

Have you been meeting with your therapist yet?

@ your parents

Which is why threatening them with the dress/toast (making a scene) idea is not such a bad idea, because it demonstrates very clearly that you are not hysterical in the least, but really quite powerful and really quite deadly serious about demonstrating your ability to tell your story to the world and leave them choking to death on their champagne and cake. When your truth is embroidered onto your dress, there is no way that that they can ignore or remove that writing.

Angels sometimes have a hand in stopping people right in the middle of their chosen path to give them the opportunity to think things over when they are at a major crossroads in life.

Nicole,

I am truly sorry this is happening to you. It appears that part of the worst case scenario that I was worried about is coming true - that your parents are going against you. For a second I had thought that maybe they are being obtuse because they may not be aware of the abuse against your sister, but I reviewed the posts and it appears that your mother is aware.

The only thing that I can offer now (besides prayers) is this thought: what would happen if you let it be known to your parents that if you go, you may not be able to maintain control and may expose not only “Ben”, but also them (since they are the ones who let “Ben” in close enough to abuse your sister even though they knew what they did to you). Would your parents get their heads out of their rear ends long enough to back off, or would they retaliate further? Do your parents make you fear for your physical safety (or that of your sister)?

Nicole,
I think you are a very brave person to go to the Priest and want to warn Ben’s fiancee so she’d know exactly what she was getting herself into. I think because your sister doesn’t want to go to the authorities and you don’t have your parents support, you should try to move on, with God’s help. What Ben did to you both was horrible horrible horrible … you were just a little girl and you had ZERO control over the situation. I would hate to see him continue to have an affect of your life… don’t give him that power. I would under NO circumstance go to his wedding and if asked I would probably say something like, Ben knows why I chose not to come - you’d better ask HIM. And leave it at that. I just think Ben is never going to really admit to anything, your parents aren’t going to come around and the whole thing is going to cause you alot of stress and sorrow. Sometimes the only comfort we have in this life is to know that there is justice in the next and Ben will someday stand before God to answer for what he did.

About your parents. I’m not going to defend them. I am very disappointed with their response to all of this… I guess I will just say that all parents make mistakes… sometimes big ones (like this) … unless you want this to always be between you, I think you have to forgive them even if they aren’t asking for your forgiveness yet. I am sure they love you very much. They just don’t have it in them to deal with this properly - and that is sad for all of you.

That’s my advice. Not sure if it’s worth much. I’ve never been in your shoes so feel free to disregard all of it. Know that I’m praying for you though. God bless you.

:mad:Please report this man to the police!!! he asaulted both you and your sister he is a pedophile darling what do you think is going to happen when they have kids?? think about it you can stop him you and your sister. These people never stop willingly. It is kids they like in a way that brings bile to my mouth. Dont make your mum and dads mistake in staying silent that was very wrong in letting him away with what he did to you he was able to do it to your sister. He is a pedo and you need to go to the police. If his partner has to find out the hard way when a child they may have sits one day and tells daddy has touched her how will you feel. NEVER LET THESE PEOPLE OFF LIGHTLY!!! He is not a good man there is evil there as only evil could be so cruel.
There is a horrible situation going on in my family and I need some advice. 😦 It’s a long story but I’ll try to make it short and coherent.

I am 19, and since I was young, I’ve had a weird childhood memory of one of my cousins, let’s call him Ben, (who is 11 years older than me) threatening me and touching me in a sexual way . I won’t get into details but I remember crying and him only stopping when his sisters came in the room and saw what was going on. Now I was really young when that happened, but for some reason I still remember very clearly everything that happened.

All of my life I never talked about it to anyone, because I was wondering if it had really happened or if I had imagined it. As a child, I wouldn’t even think about it twice except a few nightmares, but when I became a teenager I started to understand what had happened to me. I never told anyone about it though.

However, recently I had been thinking more and more about it and having more nightmares, because this cousin is getting married this summer so his name would come back often in conversations at home. One day I got so upset that my mother asked me what was wrong, and I told her: " I remember what Ben did to me". Her face looked like this:  She asked me what I remembered, and I told her everything. She told me that I was 4 when it happened (so Ben was 15), that her and my father were travelling so I stayed at my aunt’s house, and that when they came back I told them that Ben had “touched my parts” and that when they confronted him about it he denied it, but my aunt and my uncle apologized for him. I was really angry to learn that all that time my parents knew about this and they never tried to talk to me about it, that I had to deal with this alone.

On the next day I was thinking about this and I was crying, so my sister (2 years younger) asked me what was wrong. I had never told her because I didn’t want her to hate our cousin because of an old memory that I didn’t fully understand. Now that I knew that it was real, I told her what happened. There was a silence and then she told me that he had done the same thing to her* at our house* when she was 6 years old :bigyikes: Only she had never told anyone about it because Ben made her promise not to and since she was a child and he was 19 she was scared  I was completely devastated to learn that my sister had been dealing with the same thing all this time.

On that night we told our parents to come in the living room and my sister told them that it happened to her too. They just said: oh…really. I told them that I refused to go to Ben’s wedding, and they agreed. My sister isn’t going either.

Now I can’t stop thinking about this whole story, I really hate Ben. I know we are supposed to forgive, but this is so hard :crying: I had almost come to terms with what had happened to me, I was always friendly with Ben even though I disliked him. But now I know that
  1. he lied when I told my parents what happened, and said that I invented it (as if a 4 year old would invent something like this)
  2. 4 years later, as an adult, he did the same thing to my little sister
I am also really angry at my parents, for never telling me what happened, even though they had no idea whether I knew or not. Also, I can’t believe the fact that someone would do this to their daughter and not even admit it and they would keep inviting him at our house, to our birthday parties and all.

This summer he is getting married so we have family members coming from different countries, and it will be awkward when my sister and I won’t show up to the wedding. I also feel horrible for his fiancée, a wonderful girl that I get along with really well since they started dating 8 years ago. She probably has no idea about the things he did to his cousins. I don’t think I would have the courage to say something though, especially when they are getting married in less than a month.

I feel, angry, sad, humiliated and confused. I just don’t know what to do.

Another thing that just came to mind.

Depending on whether the coversation that the priest had with “Ben” falls under a “protected conversation” or not, if “Ben” later molests someone else and it is later found out that the Church knew about “Ben” and did nothing to stop him, I fear that there could be cause for a lawsuit against the Church.

I think this needs to be escalated to the bishop. The fact that this priest is going to be the pastor of the parish and he just lets this situation slide (even though “Ben” admitted to his face), I fear what would happen if there are other sexual abuse cases that arise in the parish, especially if there is a parish school. And what hapes if “Ben” happens to volunteer or teach in a program for kids at the parish? I really question whether the priest should be leading the parish.

What is the Priest supposed to do? Maybe after the Priest spoke to Ben, Ben made a confession? I hardly see how the Church is responsible. What is the Priest supposed to do… take out a full page ad telling everyone what Ben did? It’s not the responsibility of the Priest to go to the authorities and report something that happened 15 years ago (less for the sister I suppose?) It’s up to Nicole and her sister. And the sister said she didn’t want to do that, and Nicole said she wasn’t up for that either. Not without the support of her parents. I totally understand why she’d feel that way… it’s no doubt very stressful and a big mess. I think it’s AWFUL of anyone to make Nicole feel responsible for what this guy might do to anyone in the future. Don’t lay that on her!!! And I think it’s ridiculous to call for the resignation of the Priest. He is aware of the situation… how do YOU know he isn’t handling it?

I’m not trying to lay it on her, She is clearly trying to sort this out and find the courage to do what is necessary. I know it takes time to break out of the fear paralysis and she is in our prayers, but when she and her sister are finally able to break free they will have more information on the dynamics of a lot of this situation so they will be empowered with more options. And considering that her “family” is not being supportive of her, she needs to know from US that she is NOT being hysterical and that her concerns are valid and that it is HER FAMILY that is WRONG. What some may consider “laying it on her” is what some of us consider giving her ammunition in her struggle with her family.

As far as the priest is concerned, that is why I prefaced my comment with whether or not it falls under a protected conversation. If was in the context of confession, then obviously it would not. However, since the priest reported back that Ben did admit to it, it was not within the sacrament of confession, and if it were, then there would be bigger problems with the priest breaking the seal of the confessional.

Additionally, many jurisdictions do have laws requiring the reporting of sexual abuse to the authorities (in fact, I wonder if that is why Nicole’s mom backtracked on the offer to get her a therapist). I do not know what laws apply in Nicole’s.

Also, keep in mind that the great scandal of the clergy sex abuse crisis was the coverup by many in the Church. In fact, the Chicago archdiocese recently settles a lawsuit and the failure to notify authorities was one of the issues, so yes, it is and should be a valid concern for Catholics who care about the Church:

cbs2chicago.com/local/priest.abuse.deposition.2.1094898.html

Nicole, in the meantime, I think what you are dealing with at home is extremely unhealthy for you and your sister and if you can, save up money to get out on your own (I don’t know if you are in college or have a job of your own or to what extent you are financially dependent on your parents).

I know that the original topic has to do with forgiveness, but I think that some of these things that Nicole is already doing (and that she is being encouraged to do) is a necessary first step to healing and forgiveness.

I’m not trying to lay it on her, She is clearly trying to sort this out and find the courage to do what is necessary. .
Sorry - that part of my post was not directed toward you, but rather a previous poster. I only wanted to ask you what you thought the Priest should do.

It is a very messy situation. 😦 Sin has such a ripple effect.

Nicole, you do have proof of what happened. His sisters entered the room and witnessed this incident. (They can be subpoenaed to testify.)

I really would encourage you to contact law enforcement in your area. I doubt that the statute of limitations for prosecution has expired for your case or your sister’s case. I don’t know what state you live in, but a quick google search shows that many states allow prosecution a few years after the victim has turned 18.

I’m truly sorry that you don’t have your parents’ support in this situation. I’m a guy your age, and I cannot imagine if my parents pushed something like this under the rug if it happened to me or one of my sisters. 😦 Know that you have the support of me and others in this forum, no matter what you choose to do! I generally don’t advocate for disobeying your parents, but this is a case in which I would not hesitate to say that you have every right to ignore their wishes for you to remain silent.

Remember that whatever you do, you are not being selfish in recognizing wounds of the past because those wounds are truly wounds of the present.
You were assaulted, and nothing excuses Ben’s actions.

I’m upset that anyone would have to endure what you’ve had to deal with. You, your sister, and the rest of the parties involved in what you have told here will be in my prayers!

How is everything playing out Nicole? I havent heard anything for a while.

Nicole,

Please know that I have been praying for you, your sister, and your whole family. I just wanted to ask if everything was… as alright as it can be. Believe that I know your pain… I’ve had similar happen to me. I want you to know that a few years later from where you are right now, I am doing much better after alot of hard work (in therapy and in the confessional).
