I can't get over my partner's past, but I love her with all my heart

:clapping: :clapping: :clapping: Precisely! Thank you, Memaw, for having the guts to state what should be obvious. šŸ‘

It would help many relationships these days if the parties involved would remember that and not cohabitate or fornicate. If the relationship can be rebuilt eliminating those strikes against it, the couple can discover who they really are, and draw close to God, and know what His plan is for each of them as individuals. Then they can discern if it’s His plan for them to marry. It’s sad how badly this right order of things has been tossed aside in the modern world. 😦
Thank you!!! God Bless, Memaw

I think what Monicad said is right on.

I understand where you are coming from. My husband has quite the past and it was really hard for me to get over. I was a virgin when we met as well. It still is hard for me to think about his past sometimes, but it does get easier and I very rarely think about it anymore. I don’t really want to go into detail about my husband on a public forum but if you want, you can message me and I’d love to talk more with you. I’m not really clear on what you are feeling, whether it’s a sort of betrayal, or anger at her that she did not stand up for herself, or something else. But I agree with those who say to stop bringing it up with her, and instead talk to someone else, whether it be a priest, counselor, or trusted friend.

How are things between the two of you at the moment?

Where are you from?
Things are fine I guess. No arguments and no exchange of words that hurt. It’s now just my internal struggle. I am from Guatemala, she is from the UK and we both live in Germany. So yes, there are lots and lots of cultural differences between the two and between us and our hosting country.

Awww bless her…but that gives you even more reason to be good to her, treat her right and show her what true Catholicism is. If she is willing to have the kids christened and brought up catholic, she isn’t too anti catholic which is a good thing.

I think you might need to eat a lot if humble pie and spoil her a bit for a while, as well as dealing with your own insecurities about things…but I think you guys are going to be OK. Have you spoken to a priest about the situation?
Thanks for your words, they are really conforting. I haven’t spoken to a priest yet, but I am planning to do it. I’d rather talk to a priest who doesn’t know me though.

That’s exactly what I keep thinking everytime I talk to her friends! They are so different from everything that I know, from everything that makes sense to me. They make me feel I am so old-fashioned… 😦

Hey everybody,

sorry that my choice of words has created some confusion. I am not an English native speaker. I used the term ā€œpartnersā€ since that’s the way she introduces me to her friends. and no, it’s been 3 years and we have had no sex. It was hard for her to understand that but she’s now OK with it (from her perspective, completely incomprehensible…the things she’s had to put up to be with me).

It doesn’t mean that I haven’t thought about having sex with her. If we told her friends (and mine as well), they wouldn’t understand what we are doing (or not doing). Memaw, your phrase stuck with me, as these are the words that have come to mind whenever I feel tempted:
If we are going to be brutally honest, lets realize that when we stand before Almighty God, it won’t help one bit to say. ā€˜Everyone else was doing it’.

You have collided with two truths that were bound to come up sooner or later: She is not perfect, and neither are you. You haven’t ā€œbecomeā€ a jealous person. You are a person who has finally run into the situation that provoked you into the jealousy of which you were always capable.

OK, so now when you say, ā€œLord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinnerā€ it is a bit less parrot talk than it used to be. This is the typical way that holiness goes.

If God were to disclose who He is, who we are, and who everyone else is, the full truth about everything that God reserves to Himself, we could not stand it. That is a mercy. Still, it is necessary that we gradually be purged of our love affair with unreality. We have to come to know the whole truth and yet allow ourselves and everyone around us to receive the infinite mercy and infinite love of the Infinite God.

Every time it happens, you feel as if you are at Square One. You are in good hands, no matter what ā€œsquareā€ you are on. Hang in there!

Nada te turbe,
nada te espante,
todo se pasa,
Dios no se muda;
la paciencia
todo lo alcanza;
quien a Dios tiene
nada le falta:
Sólo Dios basta.

Eleva tu pensamiento,
al cielo sube,
por nada te acongojes,
nada te turbe.

A Jesucristo sigue
con pecho grande,
y, venga lo que venga,
nada te espante.

ĀæVes la gloria del mundo?
Es gloria vana;
nada tiene de estable,
todo se pasa.

Aspira a lo celeste,
que siempre dura;
fiel y rico en promesas,
Dios no se muda.

Ɓmala cual merece
bondad inmensa;
pero no hay amor fino
sin la paciencia.

Confianza y fe viva
mantenga el alma,
que quien cree y espera
todo lo alcanza.

Del infierno acosado
aunque se viere,
burlarĆ” sus furores
quien a Dios tiene.

VƩnganle desamparos,
cruces, desgracias;
siendo Dios tu tesoro
nada te falta.

Id, pues, bienes del mundo;
id dichas vanas;
aunque todo lo pierda,
sólo Dios basta.

To the original poster:

Thank you for coming here and sharing your story. Please know that although you should not have read her emails, your reaction is NORMAL.

God meant for one-man-one-woman to remain virgins until marriage, and then to give to each other completely. When that gets off-track everything is skewed. Your girlfriend gave the gift of her virginity to someone else, and that gift belonged to her future husband. The gift of your virginity belonged to your wife on your wedding day, yet it was given away to someone that was not yet your wife.

You are experiencing the rightful jealousy of a husband, because you have behaved like a husband. Therefore it is natural for you to experience these things. However since you are NOT a husband, you have no real right to an apology from her, so you are torn, conflicted and feel awful. Your emotions are going one way and your life is going another. This is what happens when sin enters the realm, everything gets mixed up.

In order to fix this I think you know what you have to do but it will be very hard. You need to go to confession, and enter into a chaste relationship with your girlfriend once again. Once you are again in a state of grace, then the Holy Spirit will help you sort this out. You need to reclaim the right order that things should be. Remain chaste and spend time together in love. Go to church together. If you discern marriage, save yourselves for your wedding night. You will not regret this. I wish you peace.
thanks for your words! šŸ™‚

Don’t worry, it’s not your words that have caused confusion. As she is from the UK, it’s of no surprise that she refers to you as partner, it’s a completely neutral term here (UK that is) and carrys no assumptions. Apologies that your thread was taken over by our little argument over terminology. Unfortunately some people never can grasp different cultures and meanings. To Memaw, Partner means you have had sex as that is how she uses the term.

We all have tempting feelings now and then, well done for staying strong through the 3 years and sticking to your beliefs that sex before marriage is wrong. It’s hard to do. šŸ‘

Oh and one of my closest friends is German…beautiful country!

Thank You Max, you just proved that the teachings of the Catholic Church really are universal. I wish you all the best and know your in my prayers. God Bless, Memaw
