I don't like the term "catholocism"

I mean the word -“catholocism”. Even after attending Catholic schooling, I’ve never heard the word “catholocism” until I talked to non-catholics.

Is it acceptable for Catholics to use this term? It just makes us seem so worldly to be another “ISM”.

Well, what exactly is ‘catholocism’ in the first place? I take it you’re referring to ‘Catholicism’? 🙂
 
Hmm. I can’t remember ever not knowing the word. I went to Catholic grade school in the 1950s, Catholic high school in the 1960s and Catholic college in the 1970s, and it was a regularly used term. To me it’s just a word.

I see Catholics using it more and more on this forum and have noticed that CAF even uses the term in it’s forums such as in the “Traditional Catholicism” forum.

When did we start using this term?
 
After reading the OP, I changed the name of the thread to avoid misunderstandings.

To me, an “ism” is some kind of man-made doctrine, or set of rules… Like communism, socialism, or protestantism. If this Holy Church was created by Jesus, we should’nt be calling it an “ism”.

Can you imagine someone claiming that “Jesus created Catholicism”…? It seems awkward.

I agree. The only word that should proceed “Catholic” in reference to yourself is the name of your sui juris Church. Roman Catholic, Ukrainian Catholic, Chaldean Catholic, etc. Anything else I beleive is divisive.
 
After a failed attempt to find the term in the Catholic encyclopedia or at any other trusted Catholic source, I’m convinced that this is not a Catholic term.

The term “ism” according to wordnet is a *“belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as authoritative by some group or school)” *wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=ism

Now theoretically, there is no group or school who issues absolute truth -as all truth comes from God. So how can the Catholic Faith be an ism…?

I vote that *Catholicism *is a fine word for use by Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

It’s OK to use “Catholicism”. It’s a grammatical point, not a philosophical one. “Catholic” is an adjective: The Catholic Church, the Catholic priest, the Catholic school and so forth.

When referring to people, you call them “The Catholics”. When referring to the Church, it’s “The Catholic Church” and the word Catholic becomes an adjective. When referring to the Catholic faith, it’s “Catholicism” It’s the same way in every other language.

Notice the name for this forum Traditional Catholicism. It’s being used as a noun. Traditional Catholic would be grammatically incorrect. If you’re referring to a person, you call him a Traditional Catholic, but there again, traditional and catholic are adjectives.

Catholicism replaced an old form of the noun for Catholic, “Catholicity”, which is archaic English.

Catolicismo: Portuguese and Spanish
Catholicisme: French
Cattolicesimo: Italian

Hairsplitting. Catholicism is a universally accepted word to describe the theological beliefs of Catholics.

Your definition says ‘authoritative’ which isn’t always the same as ‘absolute’, truth.

Further I would venture to say that Catholicism’s teaching, being that “the fullness of truth subsists” in the Catholic Church, is as close to absolute truth as we can get here.
 
How about this: try striking it from all use, and see how things go?
 
Um, “Catholicism”? Meaning the Catholic religion? Like saying Capitalist is to Capitalism, Buddhist is to Buddhism. Catholic-Catholicism… that’s the term being used in my school… in stead of saying studying the Catholic religion, we say studying Catholicism? Que pasa Mufasa? Was it not used before??
 
I like to refer to myself as a pre-denominational Christian. When asked to explain I say I am a member of the one Church established by Jesus Christ which subsists now and forever in the Catholic Church. But then, I have something of a reputation as a smart-a**.

Actually there is a definite difference. * Pre-* means original as opposed to those divisions prevailing after people started dissenting and separating. * Non- * implies that one does not recognize the divisions or claims not to participate in them.

It’s fine if Catholics choose to use the secular term for our faith… I’ll continue to use the words “The Holy Church” as I have for over 1000 posts.

I’ve never used the word catholicism before until this thread.
