Actually there is a definite difference. * Pre-* means original as opposed to those divisions prevailing after people started dissenting and separating. * Non- * implies that one does not recognize the divisions or claims not to participate in them.

Cheers,

I stand corrected. God bless.

Um, “Catholicism”? Meaning the Catholic religion? Like saying Capitalist is to Capitalism, Buddhist is to Buddhism. Catholic-Catholicism… that’s the term being used in my school… in stead of saying studying the Catholic religion, we say studying Catholicism? Que pasa Mufasa? Was it not used before??
Yeh, you can add an ism onto anything you wish -to plop it into the category of all the other “isms”.

Maybe I’m just a Catholic Triumphalist… 🤷

What about theocentrism.? Or Trialism.? Or Tutiorism.? Or Tychism. What about psilanthropism.

Look at all the isms… But not a single mention of Catholicism.
phrontistery.info/isms.html
Right, because that is a list of “Philosophical Isms.” You don’t see Judaism, Protestantism, or Buddhism on the list, either.

I think your problem is overanalyzing the term “ism.” The concept of “isms” as schools of thought or what have you, usually with a disparaging implication of small-mindedness (as you said, “To me, an ‘ism’ is some kind of man-made doctrine, or set of rules”) doesn’t literally cover every word that ends with those three letters. -ism simply comes from a Greek suffix used to form abstract nouns of action, state, condition, or doctrine. It truly baffles me how you could grow up in the English language and never have heard the word “Catholicism,” but I assure you it doesn’t carry the negative connotations you seem to be imputing to it. It simply refers to the condition of being a religion, just as the terms “Judaism” and “Buddhism” do.

No, it’s not that I havent heard the word, it’s just that I’ve always heard it used by non-catholics.

Just like I’ve never heard the word sacerdotalism… Catholics just don’t use that word. 🤷

Maybe these words are just more frequently used by those from the outside, who need to “label” other practices for debate or study purposes… None the less, I guess perhaps they’re not necessarily always used as a negative connotation… Perhaps I misunderstood the purpose or intent of labeling.

You may be too sensitive to this. “ism” is just a suffix attached to many adjectives in order to change them to nouns. It’s a grammatical construct, that’s all. It’s not an attack. We use it all the time; Franciscanism, Scholasticism, monasticism and we’re not attacking minimizing or offending ourselves. In most formal writings you’ll find that the Church refers to herself in the third person, “The Church” or “The Catholic Church”. But she’s not distancing herself from her identity by speaking about herself in the third person.

Fraternally,

I’m 98% convinced, but I’ll be 100% convinced if you can answer this one…

Why don’t we ever hear the word “Democratism” in the news media. Why do they get to call it “freedom”.

Why not replace “Catholicism” with something a little more descriptive, after all -it represents the whole Church (those on earth, the Holy Saints, and Jesus Himself in all His Divinity)… Not to ban the word, just to improve on it.

Maybe something in Latin, you know, like how we usually use the word caritas in our Catholic Hospitals…? 🤷 Lets start a trend.

Because the noun takes the form, “democracy.” As Brother JR said previously, “Catholicism replaced an old form of the noun for Catholic, ‘Catholicity’, which is archaic English.” In 300 years we might have be “democratism,” but for now the noun has a different form. Similarly, nouns like “Mohammedanism” have given way to “Islam.”

But people have been using the word “Catholicism” for centuries. It describes the faith, not the Church or its members, living or dead. If you want to talk about the Church, we already have the phrase “the Catholic Church,” and if you want to talk about its members, we have “Catholics.” The word “Catholicism” denotes the faith practiced by Catholics in the Catholic Church. Like Jews practice Judaism. It’s not really a linguistic concept you can do away with or improve on.

We can’t just make up new rules of grammar. The term Catholicism comes from the Romance languages, as I pointed out above.

Democratism is not a Romance concept. Democrat comes from Greek, not Latin. It takes a different form. “Ism” is a Latin suffix “ismo”

Thank you for making sense; I was looking at this thinking to myself…is this what Catholics are like, then your voice of reason came…thank God. This is trivial. when i first came here I thought I was going to see why someone did not like Catholicism and wanted to know why, then i read all this and thought “you must be kidding”. I don’t want to dismiss someones concern, but that seems almost disingenuous. You seem to be the voice of sound reason here. That is my 2 dollars (inflation) and I’ll move onto a topic that discusses Catholic teaching or Catholicism. :o

Well, we aren’t here to demand changes based on what we like and dislike. If I really came into this Church just so I could tell everyone not to offend me, quite a lot would be different. We all have a big problem with this teaching or that teaching, deep down. Our duty in life as laity is to fall down in loving obedience to those who are more knowledgeable.

You may not like the Church’s teachings about homosexuality, abortion, wealth, and ecumenism, but those teachings stand regardless. I don’t like the fact that the sun rises as early as it does in summer, but who am I? The Roman Catholic Church was founded by the Blessed Lord upon Peter’s brow, so I will try to defer to an idea (and institution) that’s 2000 years older than I.

Anyway, Catholicism, if taken literally, means Universalism, doesn’t it? Capital-ism, Commune-ism, Social-ism, and Protestant-ism all focus on wealth, community, equality-in-society, and protest, respectively. “Catholicism” is the only -ism which demands a universal fidelity to a universal truth. It’s the only really Christian ‘-ism’ there is! 🙂

Democrat is a a derivative term. A democrat is one who espouses or practices democracy. The “-crat” is derived from the “-cracy.” There is nothing wrong with “-ism.” After all the Church is a human institution as well as divine.

Catholicity is archaic!? I love that word - I use it all the time! I suppose I have never been trendy though.

I don’t think so.

Are you trying to accuse me of disagreeing with the Church teachings…?
Exactly which Church Teaching states that I must adhere to proper English grammer…?

…And to think, I always thought it was better to increase reverence towards God and His HOLY Church. Tell me, what else can I loosen up on…?

I guess it is just grammatical. I’ll try to get over it. :o

Agreed.

TEPO; I’m truly sorry if I hurt your feelings; if it is a concern, then I do respect that; just did not seem like a real issue, but that was just my opinion and I should not dismiss your feelings based on my opinion. What a solution would be I can’t really say. Sorry I was crass.
