Do you have MRSA or Ebola or something?
Seriously, the water is saline, and it should only go on fingertips, forehead, and clothing (no bare shoulders or low cut tops at Mass please, folks).

People are probably at much greater risk of communicable disease from handling the Breaking Bread volume in front of them. I don’t worry too much about that, either.
No, as pointed out already, salt is not added nowadays.

And even when it was, I seriously doubt it ever reached the concentration necessary to make it saline.

I am immune compromised, or suppressed. In July 2015, I had zero immune system, thus placing me at risk of fatal infection, even from the bacteria that are normal to the human body. Once released from the university hospital, I attended mass at the Newman Center and NEVER failed to cross myself with water. Neither did I avoid communion. IIRC, I received His precious Blood once. Christ’s Blood does not kill us, it saves us!

Nevertheless, read Philippians 1:20 and following!

Far better to depart this world and be with the Lord!

It is possible that you have some form of neurosis going on.

I believe that anything that is blessed cannot transmit disease! What about drinking the precious blood of Christ?I have holy water in almost every room in my home! I don’t believe the receptical that holds the holy water matters. Again the holy water is more important than the holder. God bless all on CAF!

This is a sort of superstition.

Holy Water is a sacramental, not a sacrament. It remains water.

The Blood of Christ also retains the accidents of wine, including any microbes that are floating around. This is why it is common practice to suspend the chalice during flu season.

That occur naturally in the water being used not salt that is added “to make Holy Water”, that is the point I am making. Salt is not added to Holy Water in your typical American parish.
Our issue is limescale which requires vinegar and elbow grease.

Are those short flagellum on the end?
At least they’re taking their penitence seriously . . .

🤣
Shun these deadly vectors at all costs:
Even teaching at a small college penance . . . chatting with the nurse (I said it was small!) I mentioned the symptoms of what I’d just had, and got a “Richard, that’s the flue! Didn’t you get the shot?”

“No, they said to leave them for the high risk groups.”

“You are the high risk groups!”

Sure enough, when I checked, we were wedged between the official priority groups and the general population . . .

And when I was drafted to teach fifth grade for a year, we were pulled so fast when sick it was amazing–not for our comfort, but as a vector.

One of my skills.

But coffee beats oatmeal. You’re not the first: http://www.byzcath.org/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/324286/our-ladys-slave#Post324286

My memory was actually off; I had thought that it was Fr. Serge of blessed memory that was blaming me for the screen . . . the description of the event stats a few posts earlier at

Note that unlike the latin thurifer, the eastern censer has twelve bells, three on each chain, for the apostles–but only 11 ring.

Oh I see 🙂 The churches I attend in Oz seem to have added salt.

9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.

10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times,
and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away,
and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand,
and call on the name of the Lord his God,
and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel?
may I not wash in them, and be clean?
So he turned and went away in a rage.

13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said,
My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it?
how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?

14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan,
according to the saying of the man of God:
and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child.

Now that was dirty water !

While I agree with you, you should not be giving life or death advice based on your own experience unless you are a doctor. If someone dies based on your advice, it is your fault.

As a person with a compromised immune system, you should be more responsible advising others with similar health issues.

I’ve known someone with no immune system who got ecoli most likely from using a teaspoon set down on a counter.

I’d say communal holy water would be far more dangerous than a recently cleaned counter.

You don’t think that church services had anything to do with the bubonic plague or flu in modern times?

My mother, refuses to drink the Precious Blood unless she is first in line wasn’t pleased, when news articles came out about the holy water. Btw I still use the holy water.

I volunteered to clean the church for, several, years and we changed/scrubbed the fonts once per week. Not pristine, but I suspect if the Lord encouraged us to use it I need to for every bit of Holy help I can get!

Here’s the article and I kept in mind that perhaps all of those who published it in various news organizations weren’t darkening the door of any church for a while anyway. Study: Holy water contaminated…

Out of respect, holy water needs to be put in a container expressly made for it. -->Sorry. I meant for this reply to go to @Nelka.

Any advice on how to clean a rosary? I have a sonic cleaner from the nineties which would probably clean my nice crystal rosaries. MY favorite rosaries are wood beads/macrame and they seem to fall apart in short order.

Depends on the fiber in the macrame. Some can be cleaned, but, if it falls apart from use it is likely not going to do well even with a soak in water/gentle detergent. I have never seen a macrame rosary, would you please post a picture?

For metal/glass/stone, if I’m not taking the entire thing apart to clean it, I soak it in a detergent (dishwashing liquid is good because it dissolves oil and grease) warm water solution overnight and then rinse it well. Since I have begun using an electric pressure cooker, I’ve found that when the steam releases holding jewelry right in the steam (I use a long BBQ set fork) does a fantastic cleaning job!

The knotted cord (para-cord, nylon, etc) actually become softer after machine washing.
