I went to a local mass here, first time I saw the priest would give the host to the people, and then the people need to dunk the host in the wine and then only they can eat it. When I try to receive the host on my tongue, he simply refused to, I held out my hand and he showed me that I have to dip the host as well. I feel this is wrong? Is it?

It is wrong. He should have given you the Host on the tongue when you first indicated you wished to receive that way. All Catholics have the right to receive on the tongue regardless of whether the priest likes it or not.

I thought so, any reference to this?

What about the dip?

Yeah that seems weird. I would bet that it is wrong but there may be something about tradition in the area. But either way you are still receiving Christ no matter what and you probably won’t be able to change it so I think the best thing to do is to go along with it or at least ask an explanation of the practice first.

I did ask, some people said it was to be protected from a virus or something. But then on that day, I decide not to go to that church again, just to go the a traditional church after that

It’s called receiving by intinction. The practice is perfectly all right; however, the priest was wrong to (a) force you to receive that way once you made it clear you wanted to receive on the tongue, and (b) require the laity to intinct (dip) the Host - the priest should have done that himself.

It’s absolutely wrong. The brother who instructed fellow EMHC’s and I made it quite clear that only a priest (or bishop, etc) can perform intinction - the act of dipping the Host into the Blood of Christ.

Paragraph 242 of the GIRM: When Communion is distributed under both kinds by intinction, the host is not placed in the hands of the communicants, nor may the communicants receive the host and dip it into the chalice. Intinction should not be introduced as a means of circumventing the practice of Communion in the hand.

I’d write a letter to the local Bishop to inform him of this gross violation.

What should I do about this matter? Should I write to the Bishop?

Yes, you should. Try to be as specific as you can - who, when, where. What this priest has been doing is unacceptable and he seriously needs to be re-catechized. If there’s a virus, then the Blood is not distributed, simple as that. I simply cannot think of ANY valid reason for 1) allowing the laity to perform intinction and 2) for forcing them to receive in a specific manner.

Thank you so much for your help

Greetings TradionalWay,

I would recommend writing the Bishop with all the particulars as well. Intinction by the laity is not acceptable in any circumstances. And you should have been allowed to receive Communion on the Tongue. I would also let the Bishop know how you felt about it too.

God bless.

There are a number of things wrong going on here. You have the right to receive the Host on your tongue. I believe intinction should not be the norm. Even when intinction is given the communicant must never dip their own Host in the Precious Blood. These abuses are grave and you should report them to the bishop.

I remember receiving communion in this way once a long time ago, probably when I was in high school. I didn’t know this was wrong. Thank you Rudolfo for creating this thread and thanks acarlson for the reference about it, it’s been very informative for me. Now I can be aware of it, and if it ever happens again, I know what to do.

If the priest wants people to receive by intinction (dipping in the wine), then he needs to do the dipping himself. Priests who distribute this way usually have a special dish for the hosts with an attached cup for the wine. They intinct the host and then you receive on the tongue. It is incorrect for a lay person to intinct the host himself. Also, you should not be required to receive by intinction. Everywhere I have been where this is the priest’s normal process, he announces it so that those who do not want to receive this way can refrain.

What you have told me is NOT VALID OR LICIT…Rome and the bishops said tha dipping the host in the wine IS NOT PERMISSIBLE,.

I would write to your bishop and tell him

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU

This is not exactly the same thing, but last winter there was a severe flu outbreak in our area. The diocese temporarily allowed priests to choose to offer the bread only, in the hand only.

Our priest announced before every mass that for a limited time, he would only offer communion in the hand and no cup would be offered.

I remember one younger gentleman standing before the priest with his tongue out. The priest tried to offer it to him by hand and he refused, so the priest gave him a blessing and waited for him to move on.

I felt the priest acted with Christian charity; the man did not. I felt he was selfish, demanding and prideful.

😊
