I foresee a drastic re-structuring of human values in the near furture

Pope Benedict XVI also mentioned this “New Humanism” in 2008, in a letter to Cardinal Martino which you can read here on the Vatican website:

vatican.va/holy_father/be…-peace_en.html

An excerpt:
“…How should we respond to these challenges? How can we recognize the “signs of the times”?
Joint action is certainly needed at the political, economic and juridical levels, but even before that we need to reflect together on the moral and spiritual level: the promotion of a “new humanism” seems to be ever more urgently necessary in order to enlighten human beings on the understanding of themselves and the meaning of their journey through history. In this regard the teaching of the Servant of God Pope Paul VI and his proposal of an integral humanism, which aims, in other words, “to promote the good of every man and of the whole man”, is more timely than ever (Populorum Progressio, n. 14). Development cannot be reduced to mere economic growth: it must include the moral and spiritual dimensions. At the same time, an authentic and integral humanism can only consist of solidarity, and solidarity is one of the loftiest expressions of the human spirit; it is one of the natural duties of the human being (cf. Jas 2: 15-16), applicable to both individuals and peoples (cf. Gaudium et Spes, n. 86); the full development of peace depends on the implementation of this duty. Indeed, when man pursues material well-being alone, remaining absorbed in himself, he bars the way to his own total fulfilment and authentic happiness…Humanity’s future depends on everyone’s commitment. Only by following an integral and supportive humanism in whose context the question of disarmament takes on an ethical and spiritual nature, will humanity be able to walk towards the desired authentic and lasting peace. It will certainly not be an easy journey and will be subject to dangers, as my venerable Predecessor Paul VI already recognized 30 years ago in his Message to the First Special Session on Disarmament of the United Nations General Assembly: “The journey that leads to the construction of a new international order that can eliminate wars and their causes, hence, rendering weapons useless, will not on any account be a brief one” (n. 6). Believers find support in the Word of God that encourages us in faith and in hope, with a view to the definitive peace of the Kingdom of God where “mercy and truth will meet, justice and peace will embrace” (cf. Ps 85[84]: 11). Let us therefore with fervent prayers invoke from God the gift of peace for all humanity…”

I think I can see the world accepting a true humanistic set of values that will work to end poverty and the population’s welfare. I think I can see where corporate CEOs are replaced by CEOs with these humanitarian values. I think I can see where people work for spiritual rewards more so than for monetary rewards. There will be a new world order where LOVE thrives.
I believe that, Robert. But I believe we will go through some major trials first. If they happen in our lifetime, we must remember during them what you’ve said here.

That’s a new world order I can live with!😉

I’m not saying when these things will happen, but I have faith in God to eventually change the value system of the world in which we live. It takes faith, hope and LOVE on our parts to make it all happen!
Well, Voltaire criticised this view in his book “Candide.” He depicted his protagonist as some one who never saw defeat in the course of it’s onset to enable him to arm himself against the results of his unrealistic position in his view of the world. In the end he and his companions were shunted off into a life of hopelessness without being able to effect thier own or anybody elses destinies.

It seems that you’ve taken this view so to heart that you are unable to give a cogent narrative of why your possition can possibly prevail. So that the criticisms on this site related to your views on these critical issues come automatically as a matter of common sense.

Words of optimism seem to go nowhere here, but I believe in a personal God who has the power to fight the Deadly Sins that plague this world. When we enter a world of true democracy the majority will vote for humanitarian values! It’s already set in motion, and nay sayers cannot stop its momentum.
Are you hoping that the media will stop selling sex, drugs, and violence to the weak and the down trodden? No chance of that type of humanitarianism. No way.

Here’s the real deal: The media is hyping the dream that individuals are “free,” to be less responsible, while the greater society is enslaved to pay for it. Here’s the kick in the pants: the sum of individuals ARE the greater society. It’s the same thing. This is why it never ends. The less responsible feel oppressed because they have less. The more responsible feel oppressed because of being forced to pay more.

There are Catholic prophets who agree with our brother Robert.

On many occassions since the Second Vatican Council, popes have invoked the idea of a “New Humanism” variously called “Solidary Humanism” or “Integral Humanism” (the latter based upon the thought of the Catholic Thomist philosopher Jacques Maritain). Our current Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, has mentioned this numerous times most recently this month on the 3rd of December:

Now from the Second Vatican Council:

The Pope also mentioned this “New Humanism” in 2008, in a letter to Cardinal Martino.

The Pope has been elected as the head of the media??? Well, NOW it’s possible!

Based on what? So we can feed the world one day, then what?
We can feed the world now, Ed. We just prefer to watch cable. With the change to true spiritual values, far fewer people will be able to abide luxuries while others starve.

No common sense in feeding 5000 people with a couple loaves and a few fish. No cogent narrative explains the pure faith of a soldier hardened by battle going to some Jewish preacher guy and asking for healing for someone he loved by the rabbi’s word alone.

God is just God. And there is no sense to His love.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.* – Julian of Norwich

I know that. But money and power, and the deadly Original Sin that is within us all, will prevent this from happening until Christ’s return.

I will never have cable.

Peace,
Ed

I don’t think we need to wait for Jesus to come again to make great progress toward perfection. Sometimes it’s hard to look back at history and realize we have come a far way from when children were considered little more than slaves and torture was a public spectacle instead of a hidden shame.

Maybe not recognizing the light when we see it is just the Liar’s way of spreading darkness. One of the great steps forward is the Internet. Now, people from all over the world, just plain folks, can get together and share opinions and argue and clarify and even obfuscate - and - when some moran proposes murdering unborn children because they may be born with a medical condition that will cost society money… the world objected. Not just a few people in town who read the paper, there was no great debate about how maybe that would be a good idea, even though I am sure there are those who agree.

No, people all over were horrified and disgusted and could say so. And that man and his ideas were quashed.

Hallelujah.

Yes, the devil will influence some poor deluded souls into committing monstrous acts of violence. But it’s our choice to focus on either the evil he delights in and despair of anything better, or to really see how much better life is and can be and how much positive grace there is in the world and so, make more.

What do you think pleases the Liar the most? What do you think pleases God the most?

(BTW - the cable example was just an example, not aimed at you personally.)

I can clearly picture the Hippies - young, doped up, misled. We never got the Woodstock Nation they promised either.

Peace,
Ed
I was a hippie. I was neither “doped up” nor “misled.” I was too busy working for civil rights. Note: everyone sits where they want on the bus.

When revelation enters into the annals of history, as did the “5000people…” as you have said, it then becomes a matter of common parlance. This in turn becomes the stuff of not just historical narrative but litterary metaphor and philosophical analogy. From the writtings of St Gregory of Tours, Eusebius, Veneralble Bede, Langland, Procopuis, Dante, Chaucer, and many, many others, one has the common sense of that which God gave us in the primitive, for our shared society.

The gospel has become the common sense of our laws, morality and shared history. It doesn’t really matter in the end if a few can’t make perfect sense of it. It only matters if what has actually taken place has captured and entire civilization. It matters in the end if that civilization evolves into something else.

It matters if that something else is palpably different than that which has gone before. It matters if the trajectory is one of violent bulshevik tyranny.

people tend to be pessimistic in the present and looking toward the future… and wax positively nostalgic about the past… but in terms of quality of life… it has never been better… and the future looks bright. technology and progress have always been the answer and they will continue to be. spiritually we are always playing catch up because technology and progress occur much more rapidly than we can socially or culturally adapt. we feel more of the pinch because… since the economy has gone global (due to technology) the supply and demand curves (thousands of them) have been out of whack (they always seek equilibrium) and the result has been hard on us since most of the world has had a quality of life well below ours… our quality of life has essentially been put on hold to subsidize the rest of the world. is that bad… no, not necessarily… is it bad for us economically… in the short term… yes… but in the big picture, especially as christian catholics we should be supportive (besides, it is inevitible). the quality of life for the planet has improved immensely. there is still much to be done and it may be painful for us but ultimately it is good.

as an aside, i have seen these junk emails espousing the past like the fities or sixties and while i can enjoy them to an extent… the world was much smaller then (again due to limited technology) and… what we didn’t realize during those idyllic eras was that the rest of the world was in pretty bad shape… but because we didn’t necessarily know, and therefore care, we can look back on those times with the same ignorant lens and wonder why we can’t go back… well that bubble has burst and the only way to go back is to go back with everyone, the rest of the world, back to an idyllic life, back to the future… (how spielbergian)

Only to the blind. To those who see, it is a simple story of Truth. Also fact, if you insist on such. Miracles aren’t analogies or metaphors, they are the Presence of God in Time. It’s pretty simple. Want more God in Time? Want more miracles? Get closer to God. Also simple.

No, it doesn’t. It matters if you get to Heaven. That is all. Don’t be distracted by cosmic trivialities.

But, Julia, how often are older passengers given seats by younger ones nowadays?
I don’t know, has there been a study? Do you take the bus very often? I used to ride it through the city every day and saw many kindnesses to people of age or disability or with children in tow. I also saw coldness and callousness.

This insistence that everything is falling apart and horrible and getting worse and… God’s right here. Right here. Right there, right by you, right now.

Pray. Hope. And don’t worry. ~Padre Pio

AFAIK, no studies; it’s just my own impression as a frequent rider of buses and subways in NYC that there is more obliviousness, if not callousness, to the plight of elderly riders today, especially elderly men. Maybe that’s because I’m “almost” in that category. Yes, I’ve seen kindness as well.

One wonders what you mean by blind. Sight can be construed in many different ways. For instance we may take common eye sight through the occular sense or we can speak of that sight referable to an inner enlightenment or that which refers to the sudden understanding of a subject after much toil over study. We can, without too much trouble, construe this sight as being completely withheld by some act of nature, lack of study or that which is peculiar to a degraded moral sense.

You need to tell us what you mean precisely by you assertion about blindness.

Next there isn’t at all anything in my post that suggests miracles are metaphor, analogies and so forth. The exact phrasing simply insn’t there. So I cannot address an argument set up as a straw-man argument as you have. The character of my post isn’t addressed by you since apparently you’ve missed the point of my statements.

Dante’s Divine Comedy contains metaphor and even analogy scattered throughout it’s pages grounded in common knowledge of the scriptures. The gospels contain a wealth of the parables of Jesus, which by Our Lord’s own admission are so many metaphors and analogies when He tells his apostles that He speaks to the people using this method but to his disciples He speaks plainly.

To go from that to a declaration of Christ’s miracles as metaphos, or to conclude that miracles as such are the same et. al., is to go quite beyond the evidence. A step I have not, nor will I ever take.

Finally, your sentiment about the simple &tc, indicating the possiblity of an almost scientistic step by step process that will it seems cause God to act in a certain way reminds me of some of the illuninist movements of the sixteenth through the ninteenth centuries. Mary Baker Eddy’s Christian Science comes strongly to mind.

Not knowing at present who you are, I will ask, Are you a member of that group calling itself Christian Science?

Maybe the geographic location may have something to do with it. In the buses of Pittsburgh, I see people giving up their seats to elderly people, disabled people, and pregnant women.
