I know my title sounds like a little kid saying “I get to go to the candy store!” but it’s how I feel right now! My husband is deployed and I have two little ones ages 4 months and 3 years. My 3 year old is bipolar and currently not medicated so expecting her to tolerate more than five minutes of Mass would be insane! My parents decided that they wanted to give me a break this weekend and picked up my 3 year old already so on Sunday I’ll stick the little one in my baby wrap and head to church.
So far everything is going right. My husband, who is the reason I haven’t been to church in almost 4 years has started speaking with a chaplain overseas and has been reading about the Catholic faith ON HIS OWN!
I do want to start RCIA classes again, but I havent been to ANY church since Christmas of 2005 so Ill take it one step at a time. Im excited! Im also really nervous. Going to a new church can sometimes be intimidating and although I’ve been to this church several times in 26 years I always went with a friend, and all my friends have moved away. The nerves are normal, right? I mean going into a large place with lots of people you dont know… normal, right? I cant remember if this particular Parish allows blessings for non-Catholics and if they do I’ll feel pretty silly staying in the pew. I guess Im excited, nervous, everything all at once! I keep telling myself that if I get through Mass without standing up and screaming “Im so glad to be here!” then I can stop at Starbucks on the way home.
PS I know this may sound extreme for some of you but when your faith is tested so strongly through deployment, marital issues, raising two babies on your own and one is special needs, and you just feel an overwhelming pull to get back on the path you had just started on years ago it really comes with some very strong emotions!
