I know my title sounds like a little kid saying “I get to go to the candy store!” but it’s how I feel right now! My husband is deployed and I have two little ones ages 4 months and 3 years. My 3 year old is bipolar and currently not medicated so expecting her to tolerate more than five minutes of Mass would be insane! My parents decided that they wanted to give me a break this weekend and picked up my 3 year old already so on Sunday I’ll stick the little one in my baby wrap and head to church.
So far everything is going right. My husband, who is the reason I haven’t been to church in almost 4 years has started speaking with a chaplain overseas and has been reading about the Catholic faith ON HIS OWN!
I do want to start RCIA classes again, but I havent been to ANY church since Christmas of 2005 so Ill take it one step at a time. Im excited! Im also really nervous. Going to a new church can sometimes be intimidating and although I’ve been to this church several times in 26 years I always went with a friend, and all my friends have moved away. The nerves are normal, right? I mean going into a large place with lots of people you dont know… normal, right? I cant remember if this particular Parish allows blessings for non-Catholics and if they do I’ll feel pretty silly staying in the pew. I guess Im excited, nervous, everything all at once! I keep telling myself that if I get through Mass without standing up and screaming “Im so glad to be here!” then I can stop at Starbucks on the way home.

PS I know this may sound extreme for some of you but when your faith is tested so strongly through deployment, marital issues, raising two babies on your own and one is special needs, and you just feel an overwhelming pull to get back on the path you had just started on years ago it really comes with some very strong emotions!

To avoid OPSEC issues I’ll say the sandbox and not the ant hills, if you understand that then you know too much lol. Im really overjoyed he is even considering going to Mass with me at all. In the past he really hasnt cared about church at all. And I didnt ask him to, only asked him to support me and quit turning off my alarm on Sunday or complaining that he wanted to spend time with me doing this or that just so I wouldnt go.

Well I guess I’m like him, I don’t go to church or see the point, but you’re happy and it seems like something you’ve been waiting for a long time, so that’s good 🙂

Yea I kind of understand it, though we use different terms for that here. May you find that inner peace that you’ve been searching for 😃

I actually felt somewhat the same way that you do when I first started going back. In college I drifted away from the church, then tried to get back into it after I got married but my schedule, my wife’s feelings about it and other family issues always seemed to stand in the way. A few years ago my schedule changed so that I could at least go every other week. Our girls had been/were being born and I decided we needed to make a conscious effort to get back into the church. My wife wasn’t as enthusiastic as I was at first, but it was a wonderful feeling being back in at least a somewhat regular habit of going to mass. Even now, when I get to go more often than every other week thanks to vacation or holidays, I feel a bit elated, especially if the entire family is there at the same time.

My Mother married a pagan and for good 10 years I did not go to church. I would at least dream twice in a month that I was receiving communion in church. When I finally found my feet and resumed mass, it felt natural. I was very elated as you must be now, and the mass experience was like I had never left.

Peace and Love

Good for you! I pray that you and your husband become closer to Mother Church and each other and that you both continue your journey. 🙂

I know from experience that when you’re away from home you tend reach out for God. I pray that it continues with your husband when he comes back home. Pax†

Well, I’m glad you get to go to Church! Too bad they don’t have candy for sale 😦 (j/k)

I for one love your enthusiasm. Prayers for the Journey.

Awesome! Once again the Holy Spirit is on the job! Don’t for one minute feel strange or left out remaining in your seat at Communion. (Most churches have discontinued the practice of blessing people at this time). Just keep in mind that YOU will be in that line someday soon (with your husband) and it will be one of the happiest days in your life!
