A street criminal could have stolen the gun from a legitimate owner (that’s how most criminals in my home country have theirs).

Well, yes. That’s how criminals sometimes get their guns. I doubt however that Ireland is big on dog control. 😛

A good dog might make her feel more secure.

I’m sure it would, but living in a small apartment they’re not allowed and there is no room for one, anyway. But that would have made my day a massive dog jumping out of the backseat of the car at him. LOL!
 
People need to stop thinking everything is so black and white…

Your intention to go to mass, and these unfortunate circumstances that you were put in, by no means should be considered a mortal sin.

Even if it was a Holy day of Obligation, you would still not be in mortal sin for not going to mass because of what just happened to you.
