If you are able to…help those in need when you can.
That is what Jesus taught us to do
Prayers always too!
God bless you

It can be when overdone. We need to be realistic…sympathise, empathise, give help as appropriate and pray, but what practical use is wallowing?
But you have real people suffering great distress. These people often bring on their own distress, and refuse spiritual help. I feel GREAT LOVE for these people, but I’m unable to help much.

You can’t force spiritual help on them. All you can do is pray for them, and leave it to God to do the rest.

That’s exactly what I said.

🤷

I accept suffering as a part of life. As a Christian I believe no suffering is wasted suffering.

But what about alms giving to the people in need. I hope you’re not suggesting that we ignore them. Not all suffering is necessary!

I work in hospice and see suffering on a daily basis. Have been doing it 6 years and learned a few things.
  1. There is too much pain in this world for anyone to handle. That’s why we need the One who has already handled it.
  2. Many people have chosen their struggles and are quite content with them. Not terminal illness per se, but those “life struggles” that we all deal with. If we were all sitting around a table and threw our problems on it and had to take a problem back, we would all choose our own struggles back again.
  3. You can’t help people until they are open to help. This usually involves a bit of humility and willingness to acknowledge powerlessness over the situation and responsibility for having created part of it.
  4. Everyone is fighting battles we know nothing about; so when I see someone acting harshly I try to provide a “high grace environment” realizing one day I’ll be that person to someone else.
  5. Being around suffering all the time is hard. Seeing those with out the hope of Christ is really hard.
Thanks for the thread.

The early Christians suffered and died for their faith. I don’t suggest we ignore people in those situations.

Mostly, the ONLY thing you can do is to pray for these folks.

And ask them to pray for you.

You can’t go around subsidizing someone else’s lifestyle.

[One guy filed for bankruptcy and then refused to drive anything less than a BMW.]

You can teach [or attempt to teach] by your own example. [Daily Mass, for example, without advertising it.]

For years and years AND YEARS, I was severely criticized for driving VERY old junker cars and doing my own body work, for having a teeny tiny house, for not buying soda [drinking tap water instead], for not going to restaurants, for eating on the extreme cheap $1 maximum for a meal; sometimes even $1 for a whole day], for not smoking [when smoking was cool … and especially when marijuana was “in”], for not having cable TV, for not having a computer, for not buying concert tickets, etcetera etcetera etcetera.

But we didn’t go into debt. [Or kept it minimal … just the house mortgage, which we paid off early].

We didn’t take vacations.

You can lead by example.

You can make a comment or two, but when someone complained and I suggested that buying $200 designer jeans might not be the most economical approach, I was severely slapped down … “you have no right to tell me what to do”.

So, all you can do is pray … and keep your head down for when the inevitable suffering starts. So you don’t get sucked into the black hole around those folks.

[One fellow with NO income was complaining about his HUGE medical bills … and not-well-off as we were, I was just reaching for my checkbook to help, when he mentioned that those HUGE medical bills were for his cat. … ummmm … sorry, but I’m not going to bankrupt my family for his cat … ]

[Helped one desperate fellow … and then he shows up with a new pick-up truck. (my car is a junker. I get excited when I can get the doors to close properly!)]

[Since I am always willing to help, … sometimes folks take advantage … one person “arranged” for me to give someone a lift … “only 20 minutes away” … turned out to be a four-hour extension in addition to the original four-hour trip.]

“You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you might find
You get what you need”

You can’t help some people!!!

You can pray, pray to the LORD, pray for intercession, and above all, love the people who are suffering. Help them as best you can - remember Faith, Hope, and Charity. Life is full of suffering, it’s just been that way since original sin. Christ carried His cross. Everyone will have to, at some point.

Yes, I to believe in this also. And I accept it with arms wide open. I live to serve those in need, and I see alot of it. (not quite like Mother Theresa or St. Francis)
Here’s a prayer that really helps me.

Oh, God
Oh, God, When I have food, help me remember the hungry;
When I have work, help me remember the jobless;
When I have a warm home, help me remember the homeless;
When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer;

And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency and
bestir my compassion.

Make me concern enough to help, by word and deed,
those who cry out for what we take for granted.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food.
I was thisrty and you gave me drink.
I was a stranger and you welcomed me…”
-Mathew 25:35

Remember the Holy Spirit and may God bless you
