mslizzie I know what it is like to suffer from mental illness as well. I have suffered with depression since my early teens and let me tell you it has not been easy (as you well know yourself). I am lucky in that I have never been close to most of my family so I don’t have to go through the torture of being around them.
The only family I speak to are my parents and that’s about it. The rest of my family are toxic to the one-millionth power! As a teen I would not go out for months at a time and when my menstrual cycle was about to begin oh boy would my depression then sink into the never-ending abyss.
For MANY years I felt abandoned by God or that I was being punished because I was still being tormented by depression on a daily basis. And I did just as you did…prayed for healing. I think that mental illness is indeed a crown of thorns (as Mother Teresa put it).
Continue as you are in praying for healing, living out your Catholic faith and forgiving those family members who constantly hurt you. If I were you I would put my foot down in not going to these family functions but that’s just me. I thank God that now I am able to function in life much better and even though it may seem that progress is happening one centimeter at a time when I look back at how I use to be with my depression…I am in a heck of a better position now for sure.
Your progress with your meds and prayers may seem VERY SLOW but at least you are moving and alive and that counts a million times over!!!
Don’t beat yourself up so much and be patient with how slow your progress may seem right now. Keep up the meds, keep up the prayers and most of all keep up the FAITH!
God bless you and PM me anytime you’d like!
Peace.
