What is the secret to not having any doubts?

I think the Sacraments would be a good, first place to look.

Your thoughts?

Merry Christmas - Happy birthday baby Jesus!

OTOH :o - maybe God can do more with us when we are weak, then when we [think we] are strong: including when we doubt.

(This is not, in any way, meant as an attempt at grasping for moral superiority over those who are free of doubt, as though doubt somehow conferred moral superiority: it doesn’t - I put the thought forward as a possibility, that’s all.)

It seems possible, simply because the Gospel tells of victory won by weakness, not by human strength or wisdom.

A healthy dose of self-delusion. 😃
Au contraire. The secret to not having any doubts is choice. Faith is a gift, but it is also a choice. You choose to believe even when everything appears
to point against it. If God has said something, but earthly evidence seems to suggest that it is a lie, you can choose to believe God or you can choose to believe the world.

JimmyB, I’d like to know how you can’t have even an iota of a doubt when Mother Terese and Saint Theresa of the Flower all had doubts…there must of been some time or another when you had a slight doubt…

I have no doubts….None! I believe in Jesus Christ and His Roman Catholic Church. So, I don’t understand why there are so many here, who have doubts and seem insecure about their faith.
No doubts huh?

So then what is the reason for this thread - to boast in the power of your own faith?

Hi Frontline,

I’ve enjoyed reading all the comments on this thread. I particularly liked the contribution quite early on from O. S. Luke (Post #3). It caused me to ponder and reflect for a while. Jimmy B appreciated it, too. He described it as “excellent”(Post #21) and went on to give some indication of his motivation. He wrote the following:
Maybe that is why I try so hard here. It is because I now, truly experience the fullness of my Catholic Faith and I want that for others.

No, I have NO doubts! Nothing can separate me from my Lord and His Church now.

It was this kind of faith and lack of doubt that enabled the Apostles and many early martyrs to go to their death, often times, singing and praying. They knew who Jesus was/is, They knew who Mary was/is, they knew that they belonged to Christ’s True Church and they believed in the Sacraments.
After reading that an objective observer might reasonably conclude that Jimmy B doesn’t align faith with boastfulness but with enthusiasm and courage.

Tolerantly,
Mick

Not buying it. If God said that the sky is green, and I look up and see that it is blue, then I’m going to go ahead and trust myself and say that it is blue.

But that is a false choice, because the Divinity that I hope rules this universe wouldn’t do such a thing. To my mind, if all evidence points to a conclusion different than insert whatever holy book you read, I will trust the evidence over the holy book.

That’s your choice, but it really is too bad.

🙂

I don’t. I happen to love the fact that the Divinity I believe in is not devious or deceitful. I believe that there is no contradiction between science and religion - Truth is Truth. So if science tells me one thing, and a “holy book” written thousands of years ago by a fallible person tells me something, I’ll trust science and rejoice that Divinity has given us the faculties to know the world.

Hello cheese_sdc,

****What gives you the ability to discern all that is science and all that is biblical? **

**Aren’t you, in a sense, claiming yourself to be infallible? **

**“Science” is not a person and cannot “tell” you anything. People, who are called Scientists, provided opinions on science and people called teachers, professors and authors, pass those opinions on to us. **

**Are you saying, scientists are infallible and have never been wrong? Didn’t someone once say that the world was flat? **

The Bible is not a person either and it is not God, it is a Catholic Book, approved by the Catholic Church and Catholic Popes. It was divinely inspired and written by men. God gave the Catholic Church and Catholic Popes the infallible authority to define those Christian doctrines, on matters of faith morals… found in the bible…

The Catholic Church does not believe that there exists any conflict between true science and Christian truths.

I hope this helps.

Peace

Nope. I’m just me. But the original statement was "
Faith is a gift, but it is also a choice. You choose to believe even when everything appears to point against it." There are many ways to interpret that, but I chose the sense in which the tenants of scripture contradict the laws of nature (as we understand them). That issue is at the forefront of my mind because of an ongoing discussion with a “young earth creationist” at my office.

He is firmly of the opinion that scripture trumps science when there is a contradiction. I hold a differing view.**

I agree that the Church teaches this. I wonder why you want to place the qualifying word “true” in front of science.

Catechism of the Catholic Church

2088
The first commandment requires us to nourish and protect our faith with prudence and vigilance, and to reject everything that is opposed to it. There are various ways of sinning against faith:

Voluntary doubt about the faith disregards or refuses to hold as true what God has revealed and the Church proposes for belief.

Involuntary doubt refers to hesitation in believing, difficulty in overcoming objections connected with the faith, or also anxiety aroused by its obscurity. If deliberately cultivated doubt can lead to spiritual blindness.
