Read what you posted…a child would make you inconvenienced and irritable…that attitude is what is all wrong with our society. NFP is as I understand it was only intended to be used in cases of severe or serious health issues. Everyone on these forums seems to have the idea that’s it’s an ok substitute for birthcontrol. I find that whole outlook very sad.
I haven’t been on the forum long, but I’ve read MANY of the NFP threads. I don’t find that EVERYONE on the forum has the idea it’s and ok subsititute for birth control. I actually find a surprising amount of posters who think it’s NEVER ok, no matter WHAT the reason. Some don’t think a “grave” reason even exists.

so what are you trying to say that we should expect people to switch from abc to having as many as God will give us? nfp is the middle ground there and has a way of changing peoples heart for the better but it takes time. both of you are bashing nfp and its a only moral option besides leave it up to God. 98% of Catholics use abc. I agree lets not promote nfp as easy as abc but lets not go crazy and then tell people nfp is bad too and leave them with no options, total abstaence or have a baby when your not ready!!! are you leaving it up to God? are you ok with having kids every year for the rest of your fertile life? if not your a hypocrite. are you are unmarried or inferitle if so your a hypocrite.

so what are you trying to say that we should expect people to switch from abc to having as many as God will give us?Yes, what we are saying is accept Gods will. That is the call of any Christian. nfp is the middle ground there and has a way of changing peoples heart for the better but it takes time.I dont buy your logic here. Just because people may not conform to the will of God real fast does not mean that we can condone ANY sort of sin. If people were murdering we would not encourage them to only mame in the name of being a good Catholic until their hearts were right.🤷 both of you are bashing nfp and its a only moral option besides leave it up to God.You are completely misunderstanding NFP. No one has bashed it, however it isnt what some say it is. NFP is both Moral and safe. 98% of Catholics use abc.not true, you dont do any favors by inflating statistics to bolster your argument. Too many Catholics use birth control just as too many Catholics sin. That doesnt mean the catholic way should be to sin. I agree lets not promote nfp as easy as abc but lets not go crazy and then tell people nfp is bad too and leave them with no options like total abstaence or have a baby when your not ready!!! Sounds like you have a beef with the idea of what marriage calls us to be.are you leaving it up to God?Yes! are you ok with having kids every year for the rest of your fertile life?Absolutely! But that would be a rare and extreme situation worthy of a TLC show. are you are unmarried or inferitle if so your a hypocrite. No absolutely not. otherwise the Pope would be a hypocrite. Just because someone may not be in a situation does not mean that they cannot make proper moral judgments.
NFP can absolutely be used to space for just reasons. period. NFP can also be abused. period. NFP is not a stepping stone to those who cannot attain chastity or holiness in the discernment of God’s will. We are called to always follow Gods will in every process we have. Sometimes we fall, but we get back up again.
Following your logic if a man was cheating on his wife then he just wanted to look at porn instead the Church would condone porn for this man simply because he was not ready to “follow God’s will”
The lesser of two evils is still evil.

NFP is not the lesser of two evils but rather something that can be used to safely navigate a marriage. It however can be used for evil.

Interesting idea, but since he already KNOWS what is underneath the unattractive clothing…Might not work that well. See, it’s not like men are just looking at our physical bodies…Married men are bonded to their wives through the sexual union too…That is how it is meant to be…I am pretty sure that I could wear a burqua and my husband would still want to have sex with me…Not with the burqua on…but he knows what’s under it.
Yeah looking back at my own experiences worrying about all that isn’t going to help the OP get through it any easier. Even if he had been chaste before he was married, your not sleeping next to the person your madly in love with then and having to say no to that temptation. Being chaste before marriage would definitely give a person a leg up in overcoming that challenge, but its still going to be a challenge. Probably the best advice to give him would be to work on your prayer life. Maybe look into going to daily mass? You need to have a constant source of grace that sustains you and helps you overcome the challenges your facing and keeps you on course.

yes, it is true that the pendulum swings both ways. Those who question “grave” reasons sometimes are not being charitable. However, being involved with CCL I can tell you that the 2.5 kids 3 car garage mentality is finding resistance in the NFP world. Perhaps thats why so many Catholics contracept. Even I assumed a great many things when I questioned the OPs motives for using NFP. However, I wish he would post a clarification on what they are looking to use NFP for.

yes, but I would add that the work on the spiritual life needs to be within the marriage with both partners. And that is hard to do because so rarely are we on the exact same spiritual plane as someone else. But perseverance with prayer and patience on both sides of the bed should be a mandate.

No, I am not saying what we should expect of people, that is up to the couple. I can certainly understand why people switch from ABC directly to NFP, but I would think that certainly makes the process more difficult. It seems logical, to first go from ABC (a evil and unnatural state of marriage) to the most normal, natural state first. And recover one’s virtue and recover from the effects of sin in that mode, before going straight to NFP, which even its promoters stress, requires a greater degree of virtue.

The primary purpose of sex is unitive (ie marital love) and procreative (ie marital love). A secondary purpose of sex in marriage is to combat the effects of concupiscence. This has been a long standing teaching of the church. When the tendency to sin is greatest, is when one has been living (even unknowinly) a sinful life). To do away with that tool in the battle with concupiscence is going to make it a much more difficult process. Which is PRECISELY what the OP is describing.

All of your final questions are nothing but mere fear mongering (ie are you ok with having a kid every year for the rest of your fertile life?) which are just going to make things more difficult and muddy the water more. So I will not answer those questions.

I admit I don’t know anything about being married, or even what ABC* is*. (Alternate birth control??)
I do know that if the man I loved wouldn’t kiss/hug me, and didn’t want be around me, unless he was going to have sex with me, well I’d be really, really hurt…
I mean, that’s a pretty harsh rejection.

In fact that’s pretty much a clear indication that the man doesn’t really love you at all, isn’t it? That’s what they tell us singles in the dating world -that’s what we tell our daughters- ; if he doesn’t want to be around you unless he can have sex with you than he’s lying about loving you. He just wants sex. Run. I never knew that could happen to a woman who was married. It’s really discouraging.

Maybe it’s more complicated than I understand, but you actually* said* you don’t want to kiss her when you can’t have sex with her. You don’t seem to notice or care how hurtful your actions/avoidance can be.

I wish you all the best and whatnot, I don’t think you’re a bad person, I just wanted to point out that witholding affection from your wife unless sex is attached might be really hurtful to her. It certainly sends a bad message.
You missed the mark entirely…I love my wife more than anything on earth. It’s not that I don’t want to be affectionate with my wife unless sex is available. It’s that being affectionate when trying to abstain makes abstaining infinitely more difficult. Take the Sin of premarital sex away…now put yourself in the same house as your boyfriend…hug, kiss, cuddle, go to bed together…could you abstain? Now do it again the next day…Every day abstaining gets harder…soon you realize that doing stuff separately, embracing less, kissing less, going to bed at separate times and making sure there is a blanket between you makes the time of abstinence easier. I love my wife thats why this is hard…if I didn’t love her NFP wouldn’t even be a consideration. Hopefully given time and growth the abstinence will be easier and the affection will too…we’re working on it together:D

Loyal NFP users for 11 yrs, wish I had your problem of not being able to abstain.
We work too much, have kids, don’t spend enough time together. What a gift to have those feelings/desires for your wife. But then perhaps half the fun is the anticipation, esp. during those necessary times of abstinence under NFP…

😉

Maxaddict,

I can definitely relate to your struggles. I’ve been married 7 years and until recently my husband and I have always been happy to use condoms. He’s a cradle Catholic and I’m new to the church. While attending RCIA I realized we were not suppose to be using ABC methods, and it’s been incredibly difficult for both my husband and I to get on board with NFP. Last week I went to my first confession, and I decided that even though I didn’t feel it in my heart of mind, that I needed to put my trust in God and stick with NFP. I had my confirmation and first communion this Easter, and I don’t know if it was gaining these sacraments or all my previous praying, but my heart and mind finally understood and accepted what it means to be open to life. More than that, my husband has too. We use to say we’re one and done. Lately I’ve been feeling the urge for a second child in a couple of years. I brought it up to my husband and much to my surprise he said he’s feeling open to two more children in a few years!

Prior to now, I haven’t been open to life, and therefore I couldn’t get on board with NFP. Being open to life means trusting God. Not trusting that God will stick to your well thought out plan in life, but trusting God knows what is best, and being flexible so you can work with God’s plan for you. I don’t want a baby right now. There’s just no room in our small apartment for a second child and we are two years away from being able to buy a home. That said, if it happened, we could make it work, and there’s a spring in my step knowing that I’m allowing God into this part of my life, that I’m giving up some control to him, and that makes me feel so close and intimate with my husband.

It’s not just NFP that is changing for me. I’m giving up masturbation too. I have a pretty high sex drive, and relying only on my husband is a new challenge, but I think it makes our time together even better. As for phase 2, that’s next week, and I’m worried about how I’m going to handle it. I plan to exercise more next week and try to keep myself busy (yay for productivity). It will definitely be challenging! If I can manage to abstain for a week, it will be a boon to my willpower (something I constantly need to improve). If I don’t manage, well then I might be expecting a baby next January. The stakes are high, but they’re suppose to be. That’s part of what makes the marital act so special and exhilarating.

Anyway, I hope some of what I said can help you.

Hi, Luvz2travel,

Interesting. Now would you please identify what is the good idea? Thanks.

God bless
Getting away from a selfish outlook that would be a start and not going nuts when someone doesn’t agree with you would be another. All I said was that I thought the general viewpoint among forum members ran a particular way which I find sad… the next thing you know I’m being called an infertile hypocrit by someone else who doesn’t know me. All I did was state an observation…hum wonder what Jesus would say.

I can relate to the original post – started to practice NFP few month ago. It was a bit difficult for my wife but I think she is more comfortable now.

Myself – is different story – had to many abstain periods over last few months (compare to previous ABC years) - I started to be in pain on 4-5th day. No irritations, just pain killers don’t really work. Found difficult to work – can’t concentrate and I have to really concentrate on my work… Doctor’s suggestions were not in spirit of Church teaching(you can guess), in fact I was told if I keep abstaining while experiencing pain I may lose my reproductive system functionality (infertility or/and impotency) and after ~ 10 days of abstaining I had a reason to believe my non-Catholic doctor. Pm me if you have questions.

I am not saying NFP is wrong, I keep on trying, really hope it will get easier soon. I think, it just needs time.

And Yes – should be more open to have 3rd child… Unfortunately with all the work we do with our two kids it’s a bit difficult now.

Your account of your doctor is extremely odd. I don’t want to derail the thread but there should be no “pain” involved…

I apologize. I regreat my harsh hypocrit post. it bothers me when people complain about nfp and then don’t get involved to be a part of the solution. yeah “get away for selfish outlook” great but when your married and fertile and use nfp you are making a choice to conceive or not to conceive very time you have sex. its a daily choice we have to make. if you not on abc then nfp is a part of that whether you like it or not. so really your judging the op reason as selfish. there is no list of aproved reasons and we all need to talk to a priest about. the op didn’t come here for judgment on his reason for nfp but help with using it. you never gave any advice but just complained. I don’t know how to say it without being harsh. and just fyi when you come off as anti nfp you can come off as pro abc. if nfp is bad idea for you then what is a good idea? is a great question a “getting away from a selfish outlook” isn’t a answer to that question. we were wondering if you were suggesting abc as that good diea? the answer is one of four choices if you are sexually active. 1. nfp 2. leave it up to God (very posible pregnancy) 3. total abstaince 4. abc.

Yes, I agree – no pain should be involved. Hope I will figure it all after finish with my med. tests.

The point I want to make – I am still trying - to learn to abstain. With NFP or without NFP – it’s a good skill, worth developing.

Maxxadict,

You speak words straight out of the mouth of my wife. In fact, I would think you were quoting her if I did not know better. Our situations are completely inverse… and my heart goes out to you. I have the same questions as you, but am asking really for my wife, as I seem to being doing far better with this than she is.

After years of ABC I decided I could no longer live that life and approach the alter of my Lord with this sin in my heart. My wife (cradle-Catholic like me) was devastated, and remains devastated. She hates NFP (sympto-thermo + monitor) and becomes very irritable and angry every month during the abstinence phase. Discussing any matters of why this is important to our faith or how this could help our marriage is useless. She fights it tooth and nail. She is angry with me, refuses to speak with me. Meanwhile, I go to mass daily, pray, fast, attempt to approach her with love, but get anger as a response. So I know how it feels from the other side of the fence (not good, let me tell you, brother).

Things have not gotten better after 7 months although the NFP part of it works fine, is predictable and manageable, as far as I am concerned (I help chart, get the thermometer at 5a.m., etc. - a lot of good that does me…)

While it was never my intention to “ruin” our marriage, this is the accusation thrown at me every month. I am accused of not understanding, if I even hint at the idea of “virtue” as others have mentioned here, - off with my head. I will read Fr. Groschel’s book on virtue, because I really need more virtue myself. I love her, will not leave her and will be patient with her, and my heart aches with sorrow for her frustration and pain. Ouch. Experienced NFP couples, pray for me and Maxxadict and others like us, and offer help and advice if you can. Mater Dei, ora pro nobis.
My wife and I started using NFP again a couple months ago after using abc for the last ten years. We gave up on it ten years ago because I had such a hard time with abstinence. I read post on this forum and others, blogs and talking to other couples about NFP that “it’s the greatest thing for a marriage” “NFP makes us so much closer.” Last month was tough…but I prayed a lot and we spent a lot of time talking and going for walks and we plowed through phase 2. I found myself during that time VERY irritable…angry, depressed(I’ve had bouts of depression throughout my life) sleepless… This month I feel the same way like we’re just trudging along trying to get through. My wife feels like she’s walking on eggshells and I feel like in order to get through phase 2 I have to stay away from my wife. I just don’t get it…does this stop? What do I need to do differently to be one of those people that thinks NFP is the greatest thing since sliced bread? There is a certain amount of resentment (not sure if thats the way to put it) that I feel when my wife tries to get close but I know love making is a week away. I’ve never felt angry when my wife kissed me before…how can this be a good thing? I’ve always wanted to spend as much time with my wife as possible now I leave the house early, work late and on weekends. When we talk about how we’re feeling or try to be close it ends up in frustration and one or both of us crying (not always but sometimes). The other hang up is I fail to see NFP as “open to life” if using it as a contraceptive. Is the idea that if you’re using it as a contraceptive you’re meant to suffer or give in and have children? I’ve been the advice “pray more”…“spend time together”…“find alternate ways to show love”…I need the how…how do you move past your feelings? Does NFP get easier over time or is it a monthly struggle?

Hey VickK,
No matter what others tell you, that pain is real. All men going through abstinence after long periods of never having to be abstinent know exactly what you mean. The proverbial cold shower is actually effective in real life as well. Also, avoiding sexual stimulation is probably a good idea (just leads to increased pain). I am no M.D. but I think your doctor is not accurate about short-term abstinence resulting in loss of fertility. C’mon! Really? Where did he get his medical degree? I would ask him to provide some real science on that - and start looking for another physician.

Keep trying, don’t give up. That particular issue will improve, I am sure. Praying for you.

Kinda puts the way I’ve been acting in perspective…kinda…I don’t I get hostile toward my wife just toward nfp which is voiced to my wife. My wife keeps telling me It’s going to get easier but I don’t see how. Last month we had 15 days of abstinence(have to be more conservative coming off ABC) then my wife got a yeast infection which put us over 20 days. So far this month because we have to abstain during phase 1 we’re just over 20 days of abstinence. I got up this morning very excited because we had two days of temp rise…tomorrow we’re golden!..then my wife says I need to cross check with drying up and we need five days of rise coming off abc:(…Pretty hard for that bit not to ruin your day…I felt awful I got up in a good mood…happy, ready to got to Mass a 7a.m. Then I get tossed that tid bit…it broke me. I hate that the abstinence is so unpredictable(wife says after a couple months it’ll get easier)It wouldn’t be bad if we had to abstain from this day to that day every month for x number of days but everything is random. If I have to wait for something I have to know when I’ll get it. It can’t be some random day or I go nuts. We bought a lady comp from Amazon hopefully that makes things easier predictionwise. I don’t know what average length of abstinence is but if it continues to be 20+ days…

. I don’t know what average length of abstinence is but if it continues to be 20+ days…
We average about 22 days here. I honestly think that makes it easier to ensure you are using NFP for serious reasons. I went to a Janet Smith presentation recently given at our church on NFP, and she was saying it was like 5-7 days. It would be EASY if it was only 5-7 days…
